June 28, 201411 yr Another error by the OCC: 2004 – Clickety-click! The Official Download Singles Chart is born! Downloading services like iTunes opened for business and when people are buying music, it needs to be charted! The first Number 1 of the very first Official Download Singles Chart in November 2004 was a live version of Westlife’s Flying Without Wings. The first Official Download Singles chart - with Westlife at number 1 - was revealed on Radio 1 on 1 September 2004 and has a chart date of 4 September 2004. I'm not quite sure where the author of the article got November 2004 from. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/3617020.stm
June 28, 201411 yr Thanks for you all that pointed out errors, I had fun with others on the OCC Facebook page pointing them out. I pointed out the Rap Number 1 error, and now it is removed from the Article. Not necessarily my doing but fun anyway. Edited June 28, 201411 yr by smiffj
June 28, 201411 yr It really makes me wonder what these people are paid for. Every single one of their articles seems to have several mistakes in it. I'm always correcting them on Facebook/Twitter and you'd assume they would get the hint and double check next time, but they never do!
June 28, 201411 yr Although the introduction of downloads, and now streaming, are indeed major milestones in the history of the UK singles chart, the move to having Sunday countdowns is the one that really stands out for me. It's difficult now to comprehend having to wait until the middle of the week, rather than Sunday, to hear the brand new singles chart countdown.
June 28, 201411 yr This was the one that came to my mind, although I wasn't certain it was first. I wouldn't really say 'West End Girls' was a rap song, I mean it has hip-hop influences but it's not a full-on rap song, not in the way 'Ice Ice Baby' is. Yeah, whilst you can argue that Neil Tennant is rapping on 'West End Girls' it's not really a hip-hop track in structure or production. However, 'Ice Ice Baby' still isn't the first, because 'Turtle Power' by Partners In Kryme beat it. The first Number One with any rapping on it at all is 'Candy Girl' by New Edition.

The OCC like most corporate organisations is full if dickheads who don't have a clue about the charts they are employed for their PR skills rather than their passion about the Uk Charts!

I still remember a bunch of us sitting in the 6th form room at Tuesday lunchtime, waiting for the charts to be announced. :) IIRC they did the top 5 in reverse order, and only then announced the rest of the T40? (This would be 1982-ish).

Ater starting at 12.45 and announcing the no.1 at 1pm, the next hour would be a run down of new entries/highest climbers. I never listened at school, nobody I knew seemed particularly interested in the charts so I associate the Tuesday lunchtime chart with school holdays so it was always a bit special to be able to listen to it. The rest of the time there was a more conventional chart run down 6-7pm (I think) on Tuesday evenings.
June 29, 201411 yr I wish they'd stop clogging up my Twitter feed on Fridays re-tweeting people's suggestions for "pop gem". I don't see what that has to do with the charts.
