July 2, 201411 yr Author Umi's Chart Highlights "x" débuting at #1 with 210,000 sales marks Ed Sheeran's first #1 album, as well as his fastest selling - "+" started at #5 with 42,000 sales in 2012. "+" has sold 841k to date.It is the 4th biggest opening week of 2014 so far, behind only Coldplay's "Ghost Stories" (383,000), Eric Church's "The Outsiders" (288,000) and Brantley Gilbert's "Just As I Am" (211,000)."x" also becomes the highest first week for a British male since Rod Stewart's "Stardust … The Great American Songbook Vol. III" debuted at #1 with 240,000 sold in the week ending Oct. 24, 2004.As Ed and Sam Smith occupy the top 2, they become the first British artists to hold the top 2 since Mumford & Sons and Muse did so in October 2012. They are the first British soloists to take the top 2 since 1993, when Eric Clapton and Sting occupied the top two slots.Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending June 29) totalled 4.3 million units, down -6% compared with the sum last week (4.6 million) and down -14% compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (5 million).Year-to-date album sales stand at 120.9 million, down -15% compared with the same total at this point last year (142 million).
July 2, 201411 yr Huge debut for Ed!!!! Sam is holding better than Lana. Even still, both will do well in the long run. Lana might make more videos like her previous era and she performs well in album charts anyways. Iggy is still in the Top 20, which is good. I wonder if she will reach Gold status by the time VMA happens (which she does have a strong chance of being nominated). Edited July 2, 201411 yr by buzz_person
July 2, 201411 yr Now all we need to see is what sort of longevity Ed can manage. I feel like he'll drop off at a pretty steady rate for now but once the second single appears, who knows what'll happen.

Ed accomplished a lot of interesting things this week. I found the fact that he got the highest first week for a British male since 2004 particularly interesting; I really didn't realise until now how much it's the British females that have led the "invasion" for the most part. Sam is the first male since Ed to do anything, and Ed was the first male since, who? Mika?
July 2, 201411 yr That is a pretty good debut for 'x' (how annoying that he came within 1k of the 3rd biggest debut of the year though :P) - great that he has a US #1 album to his name now, next stop 'Sing' finally breaking the Hot 100 top 10 please? Surprised it hasn't yet. Is Ed not as big a streaming force in the US as he is in the UK?
July 2, 201411 yr Is Ed not as big a streaming force in the US as he is in the UK? Not really, no. I imagine for this week's chart he'll have risen a lot on streaming (due to streams of the album) but for the week prior to the album release he was only #14 on streaming. He was only #16 on radio and he's steadily dropping there, so I think any chance of 'Sing' going top 10 has (un)fortunately long gone.
