Interesting to note that Ed's sales in the UK have overtaken his US sales after only two weeks. For comparison:

UK: 182,427 + 93,270 = 275,697

US: 208,974 + ~53,000 = ~262,000

Didn't expect the album to be that front-loaded in the US.

Ed's frontloading in the US isn't hugely atypical, I believe it's only a small amount above average. This is probably explained by the fact that he sold a good 25% of what his last album did in his first week, i.e his fanbase was a lot quicker to rush out and by the album than is usual. Unless you're someone like Adele who was clearly going on for greater success than in the past, it's difficult to sustain such sales in comparison to a prior album.

Robin sold about 50 times the amount he sold in the UK. Crazy stuff but the sales are still terrible here and I look forward to next week's drop off.

I know that album sales worldwide is on a decline, but I find it surprising and puzzling that a lot of the album released this year is struggling to make past Gold (500k). Perhaps by September, we will have sizable numbers of albums making past that mark and more.

I also find it puzzling how Frozen is still selling. The film is well gone from the cinemas and people might have DVD/Blu-Rays and streamed it already by now. It would be quite upsetting if Frozen ends up being the top album seller by year's end.

Well being honest the only thing I could see beating Frozen at this stage is a Taylor Swift album or at a push, Adele.

Probably Adele.

Probably Adele.

After what happened with 'Skyfall' I wouldn't be so sure :P And she's not really a big fanbase act like Taylor.

How much had Taylor Swift's Red sold by the end of 2012? She could stand a chance depending on if she releases this year, and if so, what month it's in.

3.1 million

Adele's new album will sell bucketloads. "Skyfall" is different - Adele's main fanbase are bothered about the album not singles. In both UK and US she'll have one of the biggest opening week sales in a long time after the hype of "21".
3.1 million

So there's definitely a chance of her getting it then, I'd say! Can't see the next album doing any worse than Red if it's marketed as well (with a huge hit single preceding it)

I actually think the 'Red' era may have done her a bit of long-term damage, both due to the negative media coverage of her love life and the blatant pop singles. I'd imagine many within her original fanbase would have been turned off her, as previously she had always relied on a wholesome image and 'authentic' diary extract-type country music. 'Red' would have definitely opened her up to much more people but I can't see them being particularly loyal. It should also be taken into account that her original target demographic will now have grown up a lot so all things considered, I wouldn't be surprised if her next album sold a lot less than her others (i.e. < 3 million).

Taylor's popularity definitely seems to have peaked in the USA, she may still be capable of doing a million first week with her next album but I don't think it'll sell near as well overall as her previous albums. Admittedly I base this entirely off observing US iTunes so I may be wrong but it seems like her last few releases just haven't been near as dominant on release as her songs usually are.
I think her next album will do a "Paula" at best.

 Can 'do a Paula' be a thing please?! Like, it was all going so well for Stooshe until 'Waterfalls' unsurprisingly did a massive Paula on them.

Speaking of Taylor, if anyone is interested in seeing updated figures for her albums and best selling singles, there's a link to a Billboard article in the first post of the Career Album Sales thread. (I'd link directly but on my phone at the moment).

I'll be amazed if Taylor manages to sell over 1 million in opening week again. It is amazing how she managed to do this twice in a row. Unless she makes a song like WANEGBT and have massive dominance on iTunes, I can only see her doing around 650k for her next album.
