April 20, 201510 yr fascinating data, thanks for doing this - I bet Stevie Wonder's Superstition has sold far more in the 21st century than it ever did in 1973! On the other hand Gary Glitter will probably have sold the least out of all of 1973's hits, barring ones that may not be downloadable like Stuart Gillies and Cockerel Chorus. Or maybe not! Wizzard's xmas classic must be pushing 800 or 900,000 by now, and I will cheer when it hits a million, as one of the first people to buy it - complete with gatefold festive sleeve. Hooray!
April 20, 201510 yr Is there a reason why Especially for You and Crackers International are in different years? Both were released in 1988 and peaked in 1989.
April 20, 201510 yr I was going to ask that question too... :D Although, interesting idea for a chart - great to see Crackers International in the top 10 this way round.
April 21, 201510 yr Author Is there a reason why Especially for You and Crackers International are in different years? Both were released in 1988 and peaked in 1989. There is no real reason. Just decision & essentially Erasure were a Christmas E.P.

April 21, 201510 yr Author 1970 (BMRB x17) It has to be said that the year end charts printed in the music press in 1970, were all based on chart performance & not panel sales or any sales, come to that. Though Radio 1 & Radio 2, did feature the BMRB top 50 sellers in it's Pick Of The 1970 Pops. They managed to pack 50 records into a 2 hour show. It told us that Mungo Jerry was easily the biggest seller of the year. Then, all those music magazines & papers, told us that Elvis Presley was the biggest chart performance of the year, but they didn't. No. They tried to say he had the biggest seller of the year & he did not. Overall a dodgy year, as the shipments really out weigh most panel sales. 01 Mungo Jerry - In The Summertime 693,000 (625,000 according to shipments! April 21, 201510 yr Author 1969 (BMRB x17) It has to be said that BMRB (in the early years 1969 - 1971) didn't often meet their Panel sales targets. Many shops were not included in the Panel. Woolworths did not participate until 1975 for instance. So, many sales were judged out of sync incredibly in comparison to shipments. Not easy to go further back than 1969. As before then all charts were made by taking indivudual top 50s, from various shops & averaging out the positions & put together a big chart. No sales figures were ever used by the NME, Melody Maker, Disc, Record Mirror, Record Retailer or the BBC. 01 Archies - Sugar Sugar p 792 in1969 (979,000 in full) 02 Rolf Harris - Two Little Boys p 910 in full 03 Fleetwood Mac - Albatross 794 between 1968 & 1973 04 The Hollies - He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother 243 in 1969/70 (713,000 between 1969 & 1988) 723,000 with the 1982 re-issue 05 Frank Sinatra - My Way 660 between 1969 & 1972 675 with a 1994 CD single 06 Scaffold - Lily The Pink 228 in 69 (630 across 68/69, 650 with re-issues in 1973 & 1977) 07 Kenny Rogers & The First Edition - Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town 407 in 1969 (600 in full) re-issued in 72/77 as an E.P. & 1981/84, the 1984 issue had "Lucille" as it's B side 640,000 with all the re-issues 08 Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine 618 between 1969 & 1986 (650,000 shipped) 09 The Beatles With Billy Preston - Get Back 535 in 1969 (565 by 1976 Rolf Harris - Two Little Boys p 557 in 1969 10 Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg - Je T'Aime...
