I start off the Champions League thread with news that Celtic's conquerors Legia Warsaw face investigation from UEFA for fielding an ineligible player. We'll see what happens there.

Celtic don't deserve another chance, losing 6-1 (and Warsaw missed 2 penalties too!), if they have to be kicked out I'd rather another club be given a bye! They shouldn't anyway, he played 2 minutes.
Celtic have been reprieved. They have been given a 3-0 win for the second leg which puts them through on away goals. This seems rather harsh on Legia Warsaw - who are planning to appeal. The player in question missed the two legs of the previous tie and the first leg of the Celtic tie. However, Legia didn't register him for the previous tie (presumably believing there was no point as he couldn't play) so those two matches didn't count. As he was only on the pitch for a couple minutes the action taken seems excessive.

Champions League play-off draw:

Besikitas v Arsenal

Lille v Porto

Napoli v Athletic Bilbaco

Standard Liege v Zenit St Petersberg

FC Copenhagen v Bayer Leverkusen

NK Maribor v Celtic

I hope Legia win the appeal, it's shocking that a player who played four minutes when the match was already 2-0 has resulted into Legia being removed from the Champions League. Celtic were awful in both ties.

It is rather ridiculous. I've seen stupider though. Elgin City were stripped of the Highland League title for fielding two ineligible (and pointless) players in the 6-0 win over Forres that gave them the championship in 1992. A whole season's championship removed for one indiscretion.

Bottom line is that rules are rules.

Speaking as a Sunderland fan, I know we were lucky last year with the paperwork for Ji. That said, if a 3-0 walkover was applied to the games he played in, it would only have meant losing one point...and it may have actually helped the goal difference ;)

Expecting Real Madrid to beat Sevilla in the super cup tonight but I reckon Bayern Munich will be the ones holding the European Cup at the end of the season. Real Madrid wont break the champions league champions curse.
Real's attack looks brilliant, but the line up does look unbalanced without Alonso/Khedira. I'm sure one of those 2 will be back in against the better sides

Dunno, I think Real Madrid will still be the team to beat this year. I think they have the best squad depth.

Chelsea will give a good account of themselves this year, would say it's between them and Madrid this year.

Barcelona will be there or thereabouts again. Rakitic in particular is just what they needed.

The defence is still their weak spot though. Buying Vermaalen is not going to solve any of their problems.

Bayern Munich will certainly win the Champions League in their home city next year imo, Real Madrid wont even make it to the final.

True, and Mathieu is an odd buy as well. That front three though...

Their front three is amazing. Better than Real's imo. The problem they have though is that while Ronaldo and Bale are apt to playing wide, all three of those players need to play centrally in order to get the best out of them. You play Suarez wide and you totally negate his key qualities him.

I don't think so.

Chelsea won the champions league at Bayern Munich actual stadium two years ago. I think Madrid will win the champions league again, they really do have the best team in the world.

Possibly, but in which case there's Pedro.

Ludogorets of Bulgaria have beaten Steaua Bucharest on penalties. Ludogorets had their goalkeeper (rightly) sent off in the last minute of extra time and had used all their substitutes. Ludogorets had used all their substitutes so had to put an outfield player (Moti) in goal. The free kick was off target and the final whistle went almost immediately afterwards. Moti chose to take the first penalty and scored. Both teams missed their second kick (Moti saved) and it got to 5-5 after six kicks each. Ludogorets scored before Moti saved Steaua's (awful) seventh kick. Moti may not need to pay for a drink for a while.
