Practically any celebrity stylist can put a girl in a gown and tell her she looks fierce, but it takes a true mastermind to dress the perpetually boundary-pushing icon—not a word we use lightly around here— known as Lady Gaga. That job falls to stylist Brandon Maxwell, who works with the pop queen to create the most memorable, expressive looks in the game. They teamed up for her flashback style on the new album she recorded with Tony Bennett, Cheek To Cheek, and the

StyleFile: What is your collaboration like with Haus of Gaga? Is Lady Gaga herself still incredibly involved in her own wardrobe?

Brandon Maxwell: The collaboration is always so incredible. Gaga is involved in every aspect of her career, and absolutely in the fashion. It’s a very free experience; we’re all young artists getting to live out our dreams. We come together, push each other as far as we can, and remind ourselves that there are no rules or boundaries.

 

SF: She’s one of the most-watched (and talked-about) fashion figures in the world right now—how do you keep things exciting? Is there a general litmus test of “Is this cool?” for you and your team?

BM: There are women who wear fashion, and there are women who just ARE fashion. Gaga is one of those women. On a woman who possesses an innate sense of fashion, almost anything can look good, anything can be pulled off. We never sit back and question if things are cool. Everyone wakes up in a different mood each day, one day she is feeling blonde, the next brunette. We embrace those moods, and do it full force. When you dress with conviction, that’s what’s cool.

 

SF: What was your approach with the wardrobe for Cheek To Cheek? It seems like maybe there was some Cher inspiration in there?

BM: Cher is always an inspiration! Tony and Gaga’s music is so classic and timeless and we wanted the clothing to reflect that. We just thought about what would still be beautiful in 50 years. When you look back at those great jazz singers of the past, they could just step out of those images, walk in to a smoky bar, and their looks would still be relevant today.

 

SF: How do the looks for the album reflect Cheek To Cheek’s sound?

BM: Of course reference is the language of fashion and we’ve studied and taken inspiration from what came before, but we’ve tried to interpret that in a way that is reflective of Gaga’s style as well. The legendary female jazz artists were real women, bold women, and Gaga follows in that same tradition.

That musical genre in particular was

more eveningwear inspired, sexy, sultry, and free, and that’s sort of how we’ve seen the whole thing aesthetically from the beginning. It’s a mix of stories past, and the story of her own life, which is a showgirl growing up performing in downtown bars in New York City. Gaga is naturally so beautiful, if you really know her you know that there is inherently a real class and sophistication to her, she’s classically trained and well educated and I think that comes out in both the music and her looks for this album.

 

SF: Tony’s style is so classic—how did you balance that with how you were dressing her?

BM: Tony is a real character, in person and also I think in his look. They are each their own personalities and I think it was important in this project for them to be just that. In both the music and their styles, it just made sense, there wasn’t much to think about it.

 

SF: Is there some magical archive of all the costumes and looks Gaga has ever worn? What do you do with a piece when she’s done with it?

BM: There’s absolutely an archive! Each piece is archived after it’s worn. It’s labeled, photographed, shipped out and put in an air conditioned room on mannequins. All images are held on an online database so we can access anything at any time. It’s really amazing in there! She really respects the clothes when she is wearing them, and long after!

 

SF: What is the one thing we’ll never, ever see Gaga wearing?

BM: Just as soon as I name something, she’ll probably walk in to the room wearing it. I don’t think we can every rule anything out!
