I always seem to fall in love with gangsters

30. VÉRITÉ – Weekend

31. LOLO ft. Giggs - Gangsters (XY Constant Remix)

Two BJSC entries and two songs about love. The first is that innocent carefree charming fall in love at the moment type affair. The second explores a darker type of love full of seedy but insatiable nightmares. And it looks like i prefer the former here, so i am obviously mellowing in my old age~ LOLO's collaboration with Giggs took me from first listen. A huge beat pumped up to the max and pulsated with her tectonic vocals and intercepted by Gigg's quite spectacular moment a third of the way through. It didn't really shine in BJSC but the merging of Dance with Hip-Hop was always going to be an iffy mix to get universal praise. I hope it gained some fans in the process though.

VÉRITÉ's second and final entry here is the hugely enjoyable 'Weekend'. A joyous song about an innocent falling in love. It's a big step up from 'Strange Enough' for me, taking all of the passion and exuberance from that and offering a more pleasing and ready to be eaten up by radio stomper. I hope she gets some recognition in the future because she is crafting a wonderful selection of ditty pop songs so far, and they're all screaming to be heard.

aw gangsters gives me memories of my first contest, think i gave it something like 5 points. it's still in my old 'faves' spotify playlist which i play occasionally

weekend is utterly fantastic, her music is just full of hooks. strange enough is still better for me but this secured my love of her tunes

Let me tell you all my secrets in a whisper

15. FKA twigs - LP1

Lights On / Two Weeks / Pendulum

16. Iggy Azalea - The New Classic

Goddess / Work / New Bitch

Igloo Australia kicks off the next section with her hotly anticipated debut album. The brash, in your face attitude of her mixtapes is here met with a more mellowed, radio friendly Iggy but it's still a riot. The highlights, away from the singles which have all been incredible, are very consistent and make for plenty of "must-be-singles" - 'Goddess' in particular would work so well. But littered among the album are a few real dud moments that stop it being the almighty project that the singles suggest. And then there's the rerelease which i gave one listen and will probably never return to again. I will never understand why so many artists create solid packages and then insist on cheapening them and ruining the legacy.

And rounding off the albums before we get into a closer look at my top '14 individually, is the wonderfully arty, mystical and engrossing LP1 from Twigs. Her whole persona, right down to her styling and live performances are quite animalistic/natural but it's a beautiful, soulful sort of personality. The music reflects this wonderfully, it's at the same time disturbing but once you get into it it's wholly natural. 'Two Weeks' took a while to properly hit me, just like the rest of it, but now i fully appreciate her artistry. She has proven very popular online and in the real world, and it's no wonder, because once the music gets to you, it doesn't let go~

Both great albums

I adore Iggy's debut [Fancy/BW standouts for me] and FKA Twigs should have won the Mercury prize, something kind of FKA Twigs related will appear in my EOY countdown in a minute

I'mma keep it moving, be classy and graceful

28. iamamiwhoami – fountain

29. Nicki Minaj - Pills N Potions

Fresh off the release of her latest album, Nicki Minaj's first single from the era has gone on to become my favourite. It's a clever throwback to her earlier sounds, but yet still remains fresh and shows growth and maturity for her. She sings of keeping things classy and graceful (one of my favourite lyrics of the year, lol) and though she throws this away at times, the song is still oddly honest and heart-felt. I love stripped back Nicki, when her lyrics really shine and her personality (her actual personality) shines through.

iamamiwhoami's first appearance in the singles chart was also her first single from this new era. It set the era up perfectly, introducing the change of direction it was heading in, thematically it introduced us to the watery nature that would continue throughout and visually is was a treat, but there's nothing new there. The song ebs and flows and explodes in wondrous crashes of synths and Jonna's vocals. It's a triumphant, feel-good number all about nature and the self and the merging of the two. I have the upmost appreciation for her as an artist and this shows she can have a lot of fun behind the pretentious (in a good way) visuals and lyrics and styling.

STOP BAL, you're going too fast for me to comment http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ed2305b7.png

The New Classic is v~funky and v~hip :funky. There are many highlights but I feel as though the first half of the album is much stronger than the latter half. All would make good singles I think even '100' which is too under-appreciated :(

I introduced all my friends to FKA Twigs who now think I have a weird taste in music  I don't think they can see that she actually produces art  I loved every aspect of the album even though I didn't particularly warm to it first (but who could when the terrifying and v~spooky 'Preface' is the first track from the album :manson:. 'Give Up' is by far the best track on the album but it's very strong as a whole <3

My EOY countdown waits for no one :o

'100' would not make a good single. The good singles would be 'New Bitch' and 'Goddess' ^_^

Lol, that's really cute that you introduced them to her, maybe they don't get her now but hopefully in time they will appreciate. You are ahead of your peers with your music loving *_* Some of it is terrifying :( but it's a good sort of terrifying, so worry not, she's not about to become The Northampton Clown :/

OOPS fallen behind a bit here but YASSSS for Night Changes and Fancy appearing! I agree with what you said about The New Classic, it has a couple of duds and the re-release is soo pointless but its highs are incredible

Won't you take me with you to where all the sirens are blaring

26. La Roux - Uptight Downtown

27. Peking Duk ft. Nicole Millar – High

Peking Duk's 'High' is being released early next year and i am currently crossing EVERYTHING in the hope that it breaks through and gets the recognition it deserves. How a song so huge, so catchy, so incredible has crossed over the pond and smashed our radios and hearts already is confounding, but regardless it gets the deserved appreciation here. I heard it first as a BJSC potential from Hendinia and demanded it be sent immediately because it was the most obvious smash i'd heard to date. Those soaring synths and vocals working together make for a superb listen. GAH save your pennies and make the song happen in 2015 people.

And La Roux dominance of the top 30 begins here. The lead single following a buzz one that is still to feature was 'Uptight Downtown'. As big a fan of her as i am, you'd expect the lead single from the album to do a little better that #26 but alas it wasn't quite the single i was waiting for and got severely overshadowed by the buzz and then the album as a whole as the rest of the countdown will prove. Still even a weak La Roux single manages to rank as a total favourite song of the year for me because there is something so effortless cool, catchy and creative about her that i eat it all up. Having said that it doesn't really sound like a smash which makes its chart performance understandable, nor does it really fit into the sound or styling of the rest of the album (except maybe sharing lyrical crossovers with 'Sexoteque') so i'm still a bit miffed it got lead single treatment as it doesn't represent the era at all. O.

La Roux? I don't no ha :nocheer: I think the Northampton Clown got her back in 2009 :manson:

I've actually heard Uptight Downtown! Yeah it's a *bit* underwhelming BUT it's alright, not single material unforch :/ NWD La Roux

Hoping LetGoFor2Nite makes a surprise comeback in the top 5 Bal :cheer:

:hi:

5 cheesemans for LOLO, and 6 orangutans for Peking Duk and VÉRITÉ – who I very much regret not giving my 12 to in the last bjsc

The highest of praise with the cheese and orangutans <3 aww if only you did give it 12 :kink: glad you liked it anyway tho!

uptight downtown is nice. but really her debut album singles are miles better. still adore in for the kill. i agree let me down gently is much much better

high  the drop is really quite something, huge synths and it's quite different. praying for it to get some sort of support

Uptight downtown is stunning and a great song but it only just made my official top 10 (albeit it was a terrible week for release as there were 4 new entries in the top 5 that week)

Shame you missed the La Roux question in my EOY thread yesterday :(

Also really hope the buzz single you are referring to is let me down gently, that really is amazing and the best song this era for me
