Daniel Avery
"Drone Logic"

this single from Daniel's recent album (of the same name) finally caught my ear, becoming one of the songs that kinda soundtracked my autumn (for lack of a better description). a fuzzy house track that's carried along with a driving techno beat, with the occasional mysterious female vocal sample, and falling into a blurry wall of synth. The track recently gave me a 5th consecutive top ten result in bjsc, and Daniel also achieved top ten success in UP when RabbitFurCoat sent in "Knowing We'll Be Here". Mr Avery sure knows how to slay those song contests!

"Beautiful"

the cover art alone probably holds a nice description of the track; a bright, candy-coated, bubbly BANGER. holds up as one of Aeroche's best BJSC entries, with it picking up a much deserved victory for the nation back in July

RAM & Susana
"RAMelia (Tribute to Amelia)"

in BJSC you get your fair share of good dance tracks, and your fair share of not-so-good ones. but with so much of it around, it usually takes something special to stand out from the pack. veterans FSR Rontvia brought that special ingredient with 'RAMelia', from dutch dj RAM made in memory of his wife Amelia. a soaring and emotional trance anthem, with a Susana vocal that really captures said emotion.

Idina Menzel
"Let It Go"

I was all set to say 'it's not often a song peaks higher on my EOY chart than on my weekly chart', but that was BEFORE it shot into my top 10 a few weeks back (after finally seeing Frozen for the first time, that effect *.*). it's rare to see a song this divisive among the chart forum crawlers; many of those choosing to hate this wonderful track through their own uncontrollable envy and jealousy of its success, but there were still the sensible among us to recognise its iconique status, not allowing the fact 'it's been in the chart forever!!!' to bring down their opinions. But to those who will continue to remain bitter and spiteful, just take a moment to imagine what Queen-dina Menzel thinks of you lot~

Tune-Yards
"Water Fountain"

woo-ha! woo-ha! Water Fountain smashes its way to the brink of the top 10, the lead single from the latest Tune-Yards album. very unorthodox art pop, with a production that rattles around and clashes together, and a lively, enthusiastic vocal performance from Merrill (especially toward the end!). all very eccentric & fun in equal bounds, two qualities that naturally kept me coming back to this throughout the year.

"Two Weeks"

The Artist Formerly Known As Twigs kicks off the top 10 with a stoned-out, sexual burst of r&b, a track that seemed to be sort of a breakthrough for her, as Radio 1 got behind it in a big way during late summer

Ten Walls
"Walking With Elephants"

Lithuanian producer Ten Walls brought us one of the most strangely captivating house tracks of the year, which later on in 2014 became one of the year's most fascinating chart hits, with its orchestral production leading into the main tuba riff. standout tracks like THIS can make hearing the chart every week worthwhile, if it only it would happen (a lot) more often

Sky Ferreira
"I Blame Myself"

landing in the top 10 is a highly impressive single release from Sky's recent album- the bouncy yet lush production and melody are really what make 'I Blame Myself' shine, a track where Sky appears to challenge certain people's perceptions of her ('is it because you know my name, or is it because you saw my face on the cover?'), while at the same time taking responsibility for creating this 'image' of herself

Liars
"Mess On A Mission"

a second appearance for new york outfit Liars! this time their recent album's leading single "Mess On a Mission"; catchy and eccentric all in one, and a chorus that just goes FULL BLAST with its loud electronics along with backing vocalists repeatedly screaming the song title. the video is pretty ridiculous/amazing also, where the three band members are green-screened onto different backgrounds and situations (and holding various objects such as signs, golf clubs, a bottle of wine). it's a very fun listen, and one i'd highly recommend

WWE is nice but got a bit sick of it due to repetitiveness, very happy it was a chart hit nonetheless for variation reasons :cheer:

"Whorehouse"

a second entry for ceo here with 'Whorehouse', a slice of sludgy balearic pop, with hi-energy production, odd pitch-shifted vocal cuts and a wonderful chorus. not a whole lot to say on this one, if you want an infectious track filled to the brim with joyfulness, check it out!

Future Islands
"Seasons (Waiting On You)"

the song i'm sure has been dominating plenty of critic year-end lists! and I can hardly fault that decision, a track that won me over with its bright, atmospheric synths, and a fantastic, crooning vocal performance that really captures the passion in regards to a failed relationship- using summer and winter to symbolise the differing emotions ('as it breaks, the summer will warm, but the winter will crave what's gone')

and of course I can't NOT post this iconique live version~

"Pushing On"

one of the real gems of the 'house boom' of sorts this year. despite the track's 6 minute length and general repetitive nature it remains a great listen throughout with an endlessly enjoyable groove, emphasised by a piano chord chiming in like a house clock. along with adopting a Quantic Soul Orchestra sample, the track's driving energy allows it to live up to its "till my stone cold grave, i'll be pushin' on" mantra :music:

'it's not often a song peaks higher on my EOY chart than on my weekly chart'

well it DOES happen when it comes to slow-burners such as this. not just for me but several others too seemingly, eventually snowballing its way into becoming one of the biggest pop hits of the year. a song that seems disguised as a party anthem but with a MUCH darker subtext- attempting to 'push down' her depressive feelings with liquor ("1 2 3, 1 2 3, drink, throw em back till I lose count"), and letting go of all good conscience for this one night.

with one of the most powerful and spine-chilling choruses of the year, i'm glad I finally came around to this track in such a big way

http://www.skypeur.fr/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/emoticon-0157-sun.gif AND IT FILLS ME UP, AND IT STARTS TO SHINE http://www.skypeur.fr/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/emoticon-0157-sun.gif

i know lots of you like the radio edit, but the original 6 minute+ version is really the essential version- taking time to build that summery atmosphere, as Olly Alexander's naturally fabulous vocals slowly creep in, backed up by some sun-soaked synths that'll make you yearn for those hot July days. As you'd probably guess this was by FAR the soundtrack song to my summer, and seeing one of my BJSC entries go on to snatch a crossover chart hit in the UK was fairly strange but also fairly awesome. one that will bring back a few holiday memories for sure, and one i'll be playing loud again once summer 2k15 rolls around~

Kiesza
"Hideaway"

Rarely do proper 'debut' (does "Oops" count? :kink:) singles really make such an instantly huge impression, a single that even with house music running wild on the charts this year, had that special quality to keep it standing tall above the rest. calling back to the early 90s with its infectious deep house groove, before hitting you with her unique, all-conquering vocals *.*.*.* it may be grating to some (*joseph quickly nods his head*), but there's a reason we don't listen to these people. this vocal performance is attention-catching, amazing and orgasmic~ and you will all be quiet and deal :3 the track falls away into a 'breakdown' section of sorts, that surely had the nation's casual music consumers awkwardly singing along with the iconic "OOOOH....AAAAAAAAH" hook <3 that third verse (the one at the top of this very post~) is a particular highlight where she BELTS out the final lines, before dropping away into the build-up/breakdown section once again

There simply was no other song that soundtracked my year, and kept me coming back to it in the way this did. Congrats to Kiesza, you've earned it hun~

What a horrific #1 :)

YAY at Sunlight though, by FAR your best BJSC entry IMO and was a great discovery for me! (even if I'd have discovered it later anyway http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/uploads/group_images/of_18_icon.gif)
