31. Chloe Howl - Rumour

32. Gorgon City feat MNEK - Ready for Your Love

33. Calvin Harris feat HAIM - Pray to God

34. Katy Perry feat Juicy J - Dark Horse

35. Paulo Nutini - Iron Sky

’Iron Sky’ just feels massive on first listen but is probably slightly too unique for this to correlate into chart success. Paulo’s return was slightly mistimed as he’s been overshadowed with fellow newer white male singer-songwriters, Ed, Sam and George. Katy Perry’s best song and the main singles highlight from ‘PRISM’ sees her deviate from her pure pop slightly with the more urban ’Dark Horse’. Of course it’s not as though it’s going to gain her hip-hop fans but it’s an excitingly different song for the charts and contributed to the ever-growing trend of no choruses. Calvin’s masterpiece and the clear highlight from ‘Motion’ is the glorious ’Pray to God’ and it’s the highest album track to feature! I never expected HAIM to work so well on a dance track and perhaps they wouldn’t in the wrong hands but this is the direction I would like Calvin to explore more. One of the first loves of the year was ’Ready for Your Love’ and it got me really excited for what Gorgon City and MNEK would deliver throughout the year. I’ve obviously mentioned MNEK a lot through this countdown so moving onto Gorgon City, I believed that they were holding back even better material but alas this wasn’t the case. ‘Sirens’ is an enjoyable album but not even a Katy B collab can make me leave without feeling slightly disappointed. RFYL is the clear highlight amongst other gems but what a highlight it is. Ahh Chloe Howl, I explained earlier how disappointed (:D) I was with how her career has turned out because Rumour’ really is an absolute GEM. Pure pop at it’s absolute best and it is something that would have been big 5 years ago. Perhaps that was its downside but it doesn’t sound dated and perhaps it was released at the wrong time ie in the middle of dance domination.

Absolutely amazing!

Excited for Kwabs in 2015 :o hope he keeps the good stuff coming!

'Ready For Your Love' is fab too as is 'Dark Horse' ofc. I wish she'd release 'Walking On Air' though :( :)

How You Get The Girl :P

Rumour is really good, her best for me. She definitely should've been bigger this year. I have a feeling she's just been tucked away in a file called 'dropped' now. :(

Pray To God is fantastic too, probably the best thing Calvin has ever done. It's a perfect fusion of both artists an has elements from both sides which sum up to an excellent collaboration. Praying it'll be the next single and get the recognition it deserves.

Soooooo much good stuff here. Particularly great to see Kwabs' 'Walk'. :D

Adore 'I See Fire' - would have charted highly had I found the personal charts forum/been bothered to make an EOY last year!

All of Chloe Howl's output has been excellent and it's frustrating that she doesn't seem to be getting anywhere. Hadn't really considered that 'Rumour' sounds a bit dated and may be a factor but you're probably right there. EDIT: Oops it seems I misread what you said but yeah I still think it's a bit dated!

Also here's 'Dead Air'

you're welcome. :)

I'm glad we share that opinion because I think 'Walking on Air' should have been a single too :)

It's her best for me too but yes, she's now filed alongside Daisy Dares You and Mini Viva :(

It's definitley up there with Calvin's best! I don't think anyone expected the sounds to work so well together. Hopefully there won't be another 'Walking on Air' situation

'I See Fire' should have been included in mine last year had it not hit me so late!

Well... I agree that maybe it's slightly dated in the fact that it wouldn't have sounded out of place in 2009 but it's the sort of sound that can last overtime, I don't know hmm.

O i see. Don't know if I can click that link though, might give me a virus :o

(ok, it's good but not as good as 'Get Away')

I adore fancy, rumour is great and I wish this was a big hit and pray to god has to be the next single, it is so stunning

I'll be v. annoyed if 'Pray to God' wasn't the next single :(

26 - 30

26. Kwabs - Pray for Love

27. Ariana Grande feat Iggy Azalea - Problem

28. Paulo Nutini - Scream (Funk My Life Up)

29. George Ezra - Budapest

30. Jessie Ware - Say You Love Me

We start off the Top 30 with the Ed Sheeran co-written ’Say You Love Me’ and you can certaintly hear his influence. Not that it’s a bad thing of course but it wasn’t the right direction that I was hoping Jessie would go down. It’s still a beautiful song hence it’s very high position and my particular highlights are the second verse and the build-up to the choir, where Ed makes an appearance :o My male breakout star of the year is George Ezra who I never expected to like so much. His breakthrough single was ’Budapest’ which may be simple in style but is damn catchy and you can feel George’s devotion to his lover. Paolo’s last appearance is ’Scream (Funk My Life Up)’ which lost its funkiest single of the year title to a late contender :/ It was great to here Paolo return with an upbeat song although it may not have paid off. It did take it’s while to grow on me but it was the spoken word middle-8 that really made me love the song. I never expected to like anything by Ariana Grande after bypassing everything from the first era and despising the way she portrays herself ie the whole cutesy innocent look. However, ’Problem’ was almost an immediate love from me, I was initially annoyed by all the high notes through the verses. It is undeniable though with the sax and Iggy’s rap and it was great to see it smash. Still not overkeen on her as a person though and her lack of star quality. The third British male singer-songwriter of the section is Kwabs with the truly beautiful ’Pray for Love’. It was the first song I heard from him and I instantly fell in love with it. I think the main highlight is how well the drums work within the track, particularly at the start. Really hoping that if things do go well for Kwabs next year that we get a re-release of this, recent comments in the iTunes thread have got me wondering how well this would have done had it been sung by a white British male though :/

21 - 25

21. Vanic x machineheart - Circles

22. Katy B - Still

23. Beyonce - XO

24. Ella Henderson - Glow

25. Josef Salvet - Open Season

Winner in the last BJSC, ’Open Season’ had me immediately hooked on first listen, making it my second favourite discovery of the year. Perhaps I should have more confidence in my predictions as I believed that it would win but was hesitant to post it because my predictions are often nothing like the actual result! I immediately downloaded the ‘In Your Prime’ EP which also contains a great cover of ‘Diamonds’ as heard in the Sony adverts. Two anthemic singles follow but are more understated in their delivery. I think that is a large factor in their lack of success, amongst the whole ‘Drunk in Love’ and ‘Ghost’ situation. First off ’Glow’ is a lot more of a grower than it’s instant predecessor but it’s almost at the same quality when it hits you. When I read about ’XO’, everyone built it up to be the big hit from the album, perhaps because it is the most poppiest offering. Alas, this wasn’t to be but it’s still a great uplifting anthem that has a beautiful structure. Hopefully, Beyonce doesn’t completely abandon her pop side when she’s still delivering gems like this. Another beautiful song is ’Still’ but it was another case of being overshadowed by its predecessor, perhaps because it bared too close a sound to it. They are certainly different though, with ‘Still’ not containing any dance influences. CFNR and ‘Still’ perfectly highlight her vocals, something I never realised was so strong before this year! ’Circles’ was a really big hit for me in BJSC in 2014 which I was over the moon about. I was hesitant about entering it beforehand though I must admit because I was I started overthinking the whole thing and was beginning to believe it would get lost amongst both the pop and dance entries. It managed to get a silver medal though and only 2 points behind a more deserved winner, although I'm not going to deny that I started thinking what I could do when hosting the next contest after I was leading throughout :kink: It was also the sixth biggest entry of the year I think, by proportion of maximum score!

omg daisy dares you ! omg i used to love her, number one enemy is such a jam, might have to give it a spin later!

circles is fantastic, really should've been the winner in that contest, shame it was snatched at the last minute. still one of my favourites this year. best of luck in tbo with this and new americana which is nice too.

Vanic x machineheart... i don't know her

'Still' and 'XO' are both wonderful, but i agree they were both overshadowed by what came before/after respectively. 'Open Season' i love too and very happy to see you've checked out his EP :o it's brilliant and 'Diamonds' is like up there with the original for me !! Exciting for 2015 ~

B-)

XO and Still  Both are so wonderful and under-rated :( Especially the latter! One of my favorite songs on Little Red along with Aaliyah.

Yes definitely one to look out for this year! :o 'Diamonds' is a truly excellent cover and works so well.

It would have to be my third favourite after 'Aaliyah' and..that other one

19 -20

19. George Ezra - Blame it On Me

20. The Magician feat Years & Years - Sunlight

’Sunlight’ was first brought to my attention through BJSC and is therefore it wins the award for Best BJSC Discovery of 2014! It’s so joyful and it’s a great late summer anthem. It may be fairly simple in terms of production etc but it just WORKS. It marks the last entry for Years & Years but, as said previously, hopefully they’ll return on next year’s EOY. George Ezra also marks his third and final entry with ’Blame It On Me’ and, in the charts, it prevented him from becoming a one hit wonder due to its lovely charm. It’s his great singing voice and folk style songs that help him stand out from the other singer-songwriters.

Great to see BIOM here, definitely my favourite by George. It's good to see him do a midtempo, I think it works well for him. The video is excellent too, a very good concept which aided my increasing love for the song. Shame the abysmal Budapest is already ahead of it in the charts
Pray to God is such a jam, if it were a single, it would have been on my EOY singles.

I don't think I've actually seen the video, will have to check it out! No 'Budapest' hate allowed here though. :o It's more of a shame that 'Listen to the Man' is continually being denied a Top 40 place. :(

Pray to God is such a jam, if it were a single, it would have been on my EOY singles.

Can definitely see it being a single next year, especially considering how much '18 Months' was milked.

17 - 18

17. Leah McFall feat will.i.am - Home

18. Kiesza - Hideaway

Kiesza exploded into the music scene with ’Hideaway’ (let's ignore that other ‘effort’) offering a modern interpretation of 90s music. It is definitely one of my highlights of last year’s dance domination because Kiesza brought heaps of personality to it. The video, while containing some erm different dance moves, also ensures the song has the whole package. The whole thing was a glorious musical moment for 2014, although she would go on to top it song-wise as we shall see. Leah McFall’s one and only ever single is ’Home’ which was one of the definitive pop tracks of the year for me. It took the best bits out of an otherwise annoying song from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and incorporated them into something that just screamed hit for me. Alas, the lack of support meant it stalled outside of the Top 40, bringing an end to both Leah’s career and any chance of anyone from the Voice (Becky Hill aside) from doing anything chartwise.
