15. Beyonce - Partition

16. Bastille VS Grades - Torn Apart

Last year's winners, Bastille, released the third instalment of their ‘Other People’s Heartache’ series recently, although they made people pay for it this time… ’Torn Apart’ was chosen to be given a push at the single, although I think the label got cold feet when it looked like it was going to be a flop. The video that it received is...strange to say the least. The song is the clear highlight of the EP, seeing Bastille explore more of a dance sound than has been seen previously, despite ‘Of the Night’ covering two 90s classics. It’s always nice for artists to be given the chance to explore different sounds before starting another ‘proper’ campaign which is what the EPs are intended to do. Regarding the EP, it does contain a couple of gems but the HAIM collaboration was a bit of a let-down. Beyonce marks her third entry with the slick ’Partition’ that has one of my favourite intros (I’m ignoring the Yonce part here) that begins with ‘DRUM’. It’s a very suave and sexy song and reminds me of a much improved ‘Naughty Girl’ in that respect. The video is also very interesting.

Kwabs, Paolo, Beyoncé, superior Katy and superior Jessie...

'Open Season', 'Circles' and 'Sunlight' are all BJSC highlights of mine.

'Home' was indeed a tune and a thoroughly undeserved flop.

Loving this countdown :music: (apart from Kiesza. 'Hideaway' is my 'Rude' :puke2:) :D

13. Jessie Ware - Tough Love

14. Alt-J – Hunger of the Pine

I was very excited to see what Alt-J had come up with for their second album and I certainly was not disappointed. ’Hunger of the Pine’ gradually adds more instruments and parts before it kicks into the unexpected Miley sample (and I can certainly say that this is the highest Miley will ever appear in any of my EOY charts). That is what I love about the song, how there is so much going on throughout which you wouldn’t expect by the first 40 seconds or so. As I said previously, Alt-J stand out as one of my favourite bands because of their experimentation with sounds. For me, there are shining examples of music being an art form. Another return I was very very excited for was Jessie Ware (I don’t know any other Jessies). ‘Tough Love’ has so much going on that you don’t realise/discover until repeated listens. Her vocal delivery is on point as ever and the production is so interesting throughout and it was great to see the Top 40 curse broken. (Quick shout-out to ‘You & I (Forever)’ too which will be in next year’s EOY)

Aha, the Torn Apart video is hilarious. At first I didn't really know how to feel but towards the end I was actually laughing out loud. Made me like the song more but it's still one of their weakest for me, I suppose it was just an experimental EP and was nice to keep us fans occupied. Excited for their next era though, hoping it's fantastic.

I found it funny too, it's just not something you expect to see in a music video by a (now) mainstream artist

Yes excited to see what they deliver in a proper campaign!

Glow is so spectacular and I adore home, both deserved to be massive hits

Also I adore number one enemy so so much  Might give it a listen now

I'm glad 'Number One Enemy' is still getting this discussion years later

11. Ed Sheeran - Thinking Out Loud

12. Duke Dumont feat Jax Jones - I Got U

Those steel drums  ’I Got U’ is the DEFINTION of a summer anthem which is why it premiered in Winter 2013 and is certainly the best of three excellent Duke Dumont singles. I never even realised the familiarity of the lyrics and the fact that they were from Whitney’s ‘My Love is Your Love’! It works so well though and adds touches of RnB to the track. Anyway, so much love for the steel drums! I’d always believed that, whilst Ed had really great material, ‘You Need Me, I Don’t Need You’ was certainly the best from the ‘+’ era and so I was hoping for another gem like that from ‘x’. I never expected that my favourite, from an album that doesn’t just specialise in slower songs would be a ballad. However ’Thinking Out Loud’ is certainly a beautiful masterpiece that doesn’t come across as cheesy despite what the lyrics may suggest at first glance. It’s destined to go down as a classic, having never left the Top 40 since it has been available and it deserves that status. Now I just have to make sure I stay away from commercial radio…

Shoutout for the Alex Adair remix of TOL as well, just so we’re not completely missing out on upbeat Ed!

10. Beyonce feat Jay Z - Drunk in Love

The last of four mighty Yonce singles is the excellent ’Drunk in Love’ which will definitely go down as one of her most memorable songs containing many iconic moments including the obvious ‘surfboardt’ and ‘watermelon’. It’s definitely the production that makes the song for me though, starting off very haunting. You can tell Beyonce’s having fun with it highlighted with certain lyrics and the random laugh. Aside from the single, I just have to mention that it was exciting when Beyonce dropped an album out of nowhere along with videos for every track but what is not welcome now is the question of ‘will they Beyonce it’ with every major superstar.

09. Marina and the Diamonds - Happy

What makes Marina so special is the quality of her lyrics and that’s one of the reasons why I’ve become so invested in her as an artist and why I’m attracted to her slower songs more often than any other artist. Her lyrics in ’Happy’ have never been stronger for me and they elevate it from a 'simple' (I use that word lightly and only in comparison to her other material) song to a position where it sits strong in my heart. It’s Marina at her most vulnerable and it puts me back in situations where I’ve also felt like vulnerable and it was a perfect song to have when I was now in a position to reflect. I don’t think I’ve ever related to as many songs as I do with Marinas.

08. Ella Henderson - Ghost

I was one of the first to doubt Ella’s success, afterall, how many sixth placed X Factor contestants go on to actually release anything? Even then, the quality of X Factor singles isn’t always the best. However, ’Ghost’ blew all those doubts away with just one listen. Following the Leona formula of getting Ryan Tedder on board, the perhaps more surprising aspect was that it was a full on upbeat song. It’s still able to highlight her vocals however and I love the way that she plays with the song, she isn’t straightforward in her singing. The whole thing was clearly designed to create a big statement and there was no way that this could not be massive.

07. Kiesza - Giant in My Heart

I just expected a case of diminishing returns regarding the follow-up to ‘Hideaway’ but I was so so wrong. ’Giant In My Heart’ is another stomper with everything going into the production. There’s strong emotion shown through the lyrics and vocals throughout, which is not something you get from a dance song, not as powerful as this anyway. My particular highlight is the ‘what’s the point of going through…’ parts with ‘point’, ‘pain’, ‘I’ and ‘heart’ all being emphasised in the vocals to show you how she feels. There’s so much going on but it remains perfection, and I don’t see how you can argue against that

06. Marina and the Diamonds - Froot

Sadly, just missing out on the Top 5 is the excellent ’Froot’ which I’m sure some (LexC ) thought would be at the top spot due to the title of this thread. It’s nothing against this song though, just the Top 5 have all had a large impact on me. I don’t know what’s happening with the campaign so I’m going to call this the lead single and it’s definitely my favourite lead single from her. It’s filled with hooks throughout all relating to the ‘Froot’ theme. Again, it’s shows off her amazing lyrical skills as well as her fun vocals. It certainly fits in with ‘The Family Jewels’ more than anything from the last era in terms that it’s a bundle of fun but it’s still a progression and shows a different side to Marina. It's a perfect pop song and deserve(d/s) to smash. I am certainly ready to be slayed by ‘FROOT’ the album which already sounds like it will be my album of the year.

Love all the last few, even 'Giant In My Heart' which is a huge improvement on 'Hideaway'. Shocked 'Froot' has been ousted to #6 though!

I'm thinking 'Changing' and 'Crying For No Reason' could be contenders for the top spot :o

Froot is a lot lower than I expected here. Contrary to every one else I'm not hugely feeling Marina this era despite liking her previous too. Froot is nice but a bit too weird for me, Happy is also nice but a bit boring and Immortal is bloody awful, not sure why she decided wailing like a banshee was a good idea but I think that'll be one track I skip. Hope she pulls it out the bag regardless because she's a fantastic artist.
