Fans angered by hosting of Euro 2008 tie at Celtic Park

ALAN PATTULLO

THE Scottish Football Association yesterday defended the decision to stage Scotland's opening Euro 2008 qualifier against the Faroe Islands on 2 September at Celtic Park, reasoning that the increased capacity offered by the stadium ruled out alternative venues such as Aberdeen.

The association also came under attack for hosting the match at the home ground of a club that withdrew three players from the Scotland squad for the recent Kirin Cup, to play in testimonial matches instead.

The issue of where the September fixture should be staged had already attracted controversy due to the need for there even to be a debate.

Normally Hampden Park would be the automatic choice to host Scotland's first competitive game of next season. However, the SFA's decision to rent out the stadium for a Robbie Williams concert in the forlorn hope that Scotland would have no home commitment that weekend meant another venue had to be sought.

The inability of Scotland's rivals in Group B to reach a decision about who plays when led to UEFA determining a fixture schedule, one which predictably demanded that Scotland host a match at home on the same date as the Williams concert.

SPL clubs were invited to bid to stage the game, Rangers among them. However, the Ibrox club withdrew from the running because a club event is to be held at the stadium on the same day.

The fact an east of Scotland venue did not emerge successful in the race to hold Scotland's next qualifying match has angered some fans. Alan Duncan, spokesman for the North of Scotland branch of the Tartan Army, suggested Celtic were being "rewarded" despite the club having withdrawn three players from the Kirin Cup.

Stephen McManus, Shaun Maloney and David Marshall were all kept back by manager Gordon Strachan because they were required to play in two testimonials against Manchester United and Newcastle.

"The game was probably never going to be played at Pittodrie because of the capacity," admitted Duncan. "But there is no reason the match couldn't have been played on the east coast at Hibs, Hearts or even Murrayfield. It is typical of the SFA to keep these matches in Glasgow.

"There's hardly a hotel room to be had in Glasgow that day because of Robbie Williams. The concert should never have been allowed to be held at Hampden anyway, as they knew there was the chance of a game on that day. But, yet again, it is all about keeping the big two clubs in Glasgow happy. It is the same old story. Celtic pull out their players and then they get handed this.

"The supporters in the north and the east of Scotland have been let down again. The majority of the Tartan Army comes from these parts of the country. It means the supporters will have to travel a lot yet again."

A spokesman for the SFA yesterday denied that the association was guilty of preventing fans watching Scotland. Instead, he explained, the choice of venue made commercial sense and also allowed more Scotland supporters to see the action. Celtic's capacity of over 60,000 is three times that of Pittodrie, Scotland's third biggest club stadium. Both Hibs and Hearts have capacities below 20,000.

"We had to take into consideration a number of factors," said the spokesman. "The financial aspect was a primary consideration. When we played the Faroes [in a Euro2004 qualifier] three years ago over 40,000 people attended. Given that the national team's fortunes have increased it's reasonable to predict that the crowd will exceed that figure. Alan Duncan would therefore wish to deny 20,000 fans he claims to represent the chance to watch a European Championship qualifier."

The spokesman added that the decision by Celtic to withdrew three players from the most recent Scotland squad was not an issue when it came to selecting the most suitable venue to host the clash against the Faroe Islands.

"That had no bearing on this at all," he said. "And I am not even aware of the SFA ever having criticised Celtic for that."

David Taylor, the SFA chief executive, hoped Celtic Park would be filled by fans wishing to experience the up-beat atmosphere roused by a new era under manager Walter Smith.

"I would like to publicly acknowledge the strong bid from Aberdeen FC to stage the match at Pittodrie, but we anticipate the crowd for the opening match of the Euro 2008 campaign will require a larger stadium," he said. "However, there is great support for the national team in the north east of Scotland, and I would very much hope we will take Scotland's next home friendly match to Aberdeen."

Robbie's return is a sellout

Sydney morning Herald

The highly anticipated return to Australia of British pop star Robbie Williams sent fans in Sydney and Melbourne into a ticket-buying frenzy today, with first shows in both cities selling out in 30 minutes.

More than 100,000 tickets combined were sold by 9.30am (AEST) for the Robbie Williams: Close Encounters world tour at Sydney's Aussie Stadium and Melbourne's Telstra Dome in December.

A spokeswoman for promoter Chugg Entertainment said they were shocked at the overwhelming demand for tickets.

"We expected strong sales in Sydney and Melbourne, but nothing like this," she said.

The demand meant an extra show in Sydney was added at 9.45am (AEST) and the spokeswoman said more than 85 per cent of the Sunday evening show had already sold.

It's been five years since Williams toured Down Under.

The current leg of the tour begins in Dublin on June 9 and will visit 14 countries on 44 different dates by the time it wraps in Melbourne on December 17.

There was a strict six-ticket limit policy on sales today to avoid scalpers on-selling them at a higher price.

Gold tickets started at $149.95 and the cheaper end of the scale was silver reserve at $99.95.

Tickets for Williams' Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane shows go on sale tomorrow and the spokeswoman urged fans to get in early.

"There has been a huge demand, all we can say is that fans need to get in early because they are selling fast," she said.

Williams shattered the Guinness Book of World Records for the fastest, and largest number of concert tickets ever sold in one day - 1.6 million - when the European leg of his world tour went on sale in November 2005.

and its not five years its only three. ;)

ROBBIE WILLIAMS

SELLS-OUT

AUSTRALIAN TOUR

BUT DO WE WANT MORE?

If Australia wants more Robbie Williams concerts, promoter Michael Chugg will ask, but fans should start petitioning now… to local radio, ticket agency websites and, of course, at www.chuggentertainment.com

Amassing more than 300,000 ticket sales, Australia today joined the record-breaking sell-out frenzy that’s greeted every Robbie Williams on-sale in the rest of the world, selling out all five of his originally scheduled December Australian concerts, plus a second in Sydney.

In an Australian first, Robbie Williams’ concert tickets went on sale across two days, alternating ticketing agencies and cities to give fans the best chance to buy their tickets.

Sydney and Melbourne went on sale yesterday; Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane, today.

More than 100,000 lucky fans in Sydney and Melbourne yesterday guaranteed their summer date with Robbie – the “world’s favourite entertainer and most dynamic showman ever seen†– selling out the two cities stadium shows in a mere thirty minutes each.

Sydney sold immediately rolled into a second concert at Aussie Stadium confirmed for December 10, and it sold out today!

Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane, five years in waiting, went on sale today and all concerts were sold out before lunch time.

Perth on the west coast, and the first ever 50,000+ capacity concert at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium joined the east coast’s high-speed express lane, and sold out in a record thirty minutes. Adelaide sold out within two hours.

While Sydney was offered its second show almost immediately, anyone who missed out in the other capital cities are going to have to speak up to get their second chance.

“This show is a technological monster,†said promoter Michael Chugg. “With the gruelling schedule to build the stage in each city, it’s going to be tough to fit in any more dates, but if the fans want it, we’ll ask for it!â€

Chugg today encouraged any fans that missed out to register their interest click HERE

“If there’s enough noise and the fans demand it – we’ll take it to Robbie’s people – Robbie’s love for Australia is no secret, so we may just be able to make it happen,†said Chugg.

Robbie Williams: Close Encounter World Tour starts next Friday June 9 in Dublin, visits 14 countries on 44 different dates, and finishes in Australia.

Do we want more? … You betcha!

Rain, hail or shine, they camped out in line

South Coast Register

PEOPLE slept in an alleyway off Nowra's main street through the cold, wet and windy conditions of Monday night.

They were lining up to buy tickets for a Robbie Williams concert to be held in Sydney on December 9.

Some of them were unlikely tourists, camping out in rainy Nowra because of a better chance of scoring tickets here than Sydney.

The first two people in line, Alicia Barnes and Cindy Rojouant, came from Blacktown.

They started lining up at 3pm on Monday afternoon, waiting for Ticketek to open at 9am.

"They were here before I finished work yesterday afternoon," Brad Payne from Hewletts Record Bar said as he was opening up the store.

Mr Payne said people from Sydney often come down to get tickets.

Robbie Williams

Extends World Tour

To Play 2nd Melbourne Concert

Australian promoter Michael Chugg today confirmed overnight negotiations with Robbie Williams’ management resulted in the stadium pop giant agreeing to extend his World Tour by a day and add another concert for Melbourne.

The Robbie Williams: Close Encounters World Tour, originally scheduled to finish in Melbourne on Sunday December 17, will now end in the same city a night later.

Robbie Williams will play a second concert at Melbourne’s Telstra Dome on Monday December 18 and tickets go on sale next Friday June 16 at 9am. The six ticket limit per transaction will apply.

The addition of Melbourne, and Sydney’s second – which rolled 45 minutes after the first went on sale on Tuesday – takes Robbie’s World Tour to a total of 47 dates in 44 countries and the seven Australian concerts puts us on equal footing with the pop-hunk’s number of shows in England and makes us the country with the most Robbie concerts outside his homeland.

“The fact Robbie loves Australia helped sway this important decision,†said Chugg. “And it’s clear, Australians love Robbie.â€

Only robbiewilliams.com Inner Sanctum members will secure an internet presale for the second Melbourne concert and all other general public tickets will be available from Ticketmaster from Friday June 16 at 9am.

“The speed of sales and the mass number of tickets sold is a phenomenon like we have never seen in Australia before,†said Chugg.

“Robbie Williams is a super-star in its purest and truest sense and Australians have voted with their wallets, and frankly their hearts, to prove it so.

“Melbournians not wanting to miss out should get in quick.â€

Robbie Williams: Close Encounters World Tour kicks off in Dublin next Friday June 9 and now finishes in Melbourne, a day later than originally scheduled, on Monday December 18.

Just found these photos on Getty Images. They are dated 4th of June and headed up 'Max Beesley Gala Dinner'

Robbie was obviously there as he is in some of the photos. No idea what this Gala Dinner was for.

The gala dinner was in aid of the Five Star Scanner Appeal, which aims to raise funds for the Greater Manchester Children's Hospital.

The dinner was at The Belfry DeVere Hotel on June 4, 2006 in Sutton Coldfield, England.

The event raised over £80,000, much of which came from the auction which included items such as World Cup tickets and tickets to see Robbie Williams in concert.

Robbie Williams flew in by helicopter to attend the event in person.
