Fantastic for Downtown reaching #1!!! It took a while but glad it finally reached there!!! Sugar has been played more on radio, MTV and Channel V recently, so longevity may be possible. Great for Jess and Sia to grab another Top 10. The numbers for Top 10 sales are looking rather closer in recent weeks. The Top 2 race was tight but the numbers for 3-10 were quite close as well that any of these seven songs would have traded places.

No change at the top. Ellie Goulding has been in the country and performed at the AFL grand final which pushed some of her hits back up. On My Mind was briefly #1 on iTunes but no longer so it looks like Macklemore & Ryan Lewis will be #1 again next week. Jess Mauboy ruins my observation from last week as This Ain't Love moves up to #5, making it possibly the highest charting drum & bass song apart from "Feel The Love" Drake also sets a new best for himself on the singles chart as Hotline Bling lands at his favourite number. Same can also be said of Disclosure who get their first top 20 hit alongside Lorde who gets her 4th. On the album chart, triple j's Like a Version series gets a 3rd consecutive #1, and in the process gives Cold Chisel their 3rd #2 album this decade. They haven't had a #1 since 1998. Bryan Adams was also at the AFL grand final to explain the questionable entries.

After it not being apparent they'd even get there, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are quite entrenched at #1, and it looks pretty likely they'll get a 4th week next week. Only Pharrell, Rihanna & LMFAO have spent more time this decade at #1 than them. In what is surely a blatant attempt to game the chart, this year's X Factor performances have been going straight to pre-order and only becoming available on Friday, essentially allowing them 11 days to accumulate sales and maximise their debut. Though none quite made it in last week, thanks to heavy plugging on the promos, a version of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" comes in at #6 (though it was #3 on the digital tracks chart, because these performances have never been on Spotify). That means it outpeaks the original which only got to #14, as well as Parra For Cuva's version which made #13 last year. Rudimental have their 4th top 10 hit with "Lay It All On Me", and The Weeknd finally makes the top 10 with "The Hills" thanks to the remix package. Although apparently the remix package itself is #101 this week, people individually buying the Eminem remix are counting. The track still seems to be rather low though considering it was at one point the top selling song on iTunes last week, which is possibly because I don't think sales (and possibly streams) of the clean version are counting to its chart positions, for some reason. Anyway, Fetty Wap has a big jump with "679" which puts it at a chance to outpeak "Trap Queen" as it's only 2 places away from doing that. The 1975 get their first EVER charting single this week, and live performances on X Factor help boost Jess Glynne & Little Mix to new peaks with their current singles.

On the album chart, Sydney band Boy & Bear get their 2nd #1 with their 3rd album. Their 1st album is by far their most successful (and won them an Album of the Year ARIA Award), but like many 2011 albums, it was blocked by Adele's "21". Mind you I can't say with absolute confidence that they are #1 this week as The Game started the week at #1 on iTunes but for some reason, is completely absent from the chart. Either way, it's a new chart peak for Selena Gomez at #3, and Jess Glynne's album jumps back into the top 10. Though the iTunes album chart is being dominated by pre-orders, it's looking quite likely that next week's #1 will be Hillsong, potentially the first time they've had 2 #1s in a row (or even in the same year).

Slay me Mahalia #88 *.* In seriousness oh wow, Cyrus at #6 :o Nobody last season even got top 10 (apart from Dean and Marlisa with their winner/runner-up singles, i know he was #1 for a while but I thought streaming would push him down more!
  • Author

I reckon overall lowered sales will help X Factor entries a lot. Wouldn't be surprised if the winner single goes to #1 even though Marlisa missed out last year.

Also just in, Boy & Bear only made #1 by less than 100 sales :o

One of the absolute closest chart battles in recent times has ended up with the least surprising result. "Downtown" is #1 for a 4th week, but only holds off "Hotline Bling" by 200 sales, which in itself was only about 200 sales ahead of "The Hills" which finally seems to be getting its sales correctly counted. One Direction can't be far off the mark too as they outranked Macklemore & Ryan Lewis on the digital tracks chart, which means that the clean version of "Downtown" which generally sits around #50 on iTunes is what kept it at #1. Jess Glynne's recent promo continues to pay dividends as it nets her a first solo top 10 hit with "Don't Be So Hard On Yourself". Despite missing the UK top 40, Duke Dumont's "Ocean Drive" is proving a strong hit here, moving up to #17 and matching "I Got U" for his highest position, but it may very well keep climbing next week. Despite neither having charted at all here before, Zara Larsson & MNEK look to do well here with "Never Forget You" debuting in the top 40, but rapidly climbing on iTunes and Spotify so could be top 10 next week. For X Factor, the pre-order strategy proves to make the tracks excessively frontloaded, as Cyrus's #6 debut last week falls to #81. Incidentally, the highest act this week is Jess & Matt who were nearly eliminated.

On the album chart, Hillsong get their 4th #1. This time it's under the Hillsong Worship banner from which (if Wikipedia can be trusted) they got their 1st #1 in 2004, while the other two were Hillsong United. This means that there have been two Hillsong #1s this year. Demi Lovato makes a big improvement on past performance and gets her first top 10 album this week, all the way up at #3. The same can also be said of Pentatonix who manage #5. For the second week in a row, The Game's self-released new album is absent from the chart, which I'd hazard to say would have landed in the top 10. Despite underperformance in the singles chart this year, 5 Seconds Of Summer will very likely debut at #1 next week. Adele's "21" re-enters the chart at #97 in preparation for her world take over.

I don't think anyone is surprised that Adele is #1. Incidentally though, Australia seems relatively nonplussed as she was 'only' selling about four times as much as the main pack. Justin Bieber is #2 of course on figures that would probably have him #1 most weeks. Either way, a week later and neither song has really budged so expect to see the same top 2 again next week. "Uptown Funk" becomes only the 6th song to last 50 weeks in the top 50, and only the 3rd to do it without dropping out. It only has 3 weeks to go to match the longevity record bizarrely being held by Bruce Springsteen & LMFAO. Also if you want a good measure of how streaming is sitting on the chart at the moment, Sigala was #40 on the digital tracks chart, but because his streams don't count for some reason, he's pushed down 19 spots to #59. He should probably be around #35. But then at least he's on the chart; Avicii's "Broken Arrows" was a strong seller this past week but there's no evidence of it on the chart at all, classic ARIA.

On the album chart, 5 Seconds of Summer's 2nd album goes straight to #1 just like their debut. They block Chris Isaak who has only been to #1 with his Best Of in 2006. Since Adele & Justin Bieber's pre-orders don't count to next week's chart, it's a bit of an empty week on the schedule. It looks like recent ARIA Hall Of Fame inductee Tina Arena will be getting her first #1 album in nearly 20 years though.

A side effect of Adele not quite performing quite as strongly here as in other countries is that I have the slight suspicion her sales this week haven't really dropped at all, and don't look like dropping much next week either, she still is selling more than double of any other song. Rolling In The Deep also joins Someone Like You at the bottom of the chart, both songs have sold roughly the same here. Meanwhile Duke Dumont has his first ever top 10 hit with "Ocean Drive", and Ariana Grande gets her 4th with "Focus". Incidentally, streaming impacts her position moreso here than in the UK despite streams counting for half as much here. Ariana's debut also spells bad luck for LunchMoney Lewis who has spent four consecutive weeks at #11 with "Whip It!" not cracking the top 10.

On the album chart, just like in the UK, the new Elvis compilation goes straight to #1. What's perhaps surprising about this is that because Australia's album chart only started in 1975 (I think), this is actually only Elvis's 2nd #1 album, after his Hits compilation in the early 2000s. Def Leppard also go in at #4 despite their last studio album not even cracking the top 50. Next week expect big entries from Little Mix and Ellie Goulding but they may both struggle to top the chart. For some reason, Michael Buble's "Christmas" is back in the chart earlier than usual. It has gone to #1 every year since release but perhaps Adele will be able to stop it this time.

Hello has sold 107, 300 copies in the first two weeks of release in Australia. Week 1 it sold 59, 075 copies and week 2 it sold 48, 225 copies.

Both charts have the same #1 for the first time in ages. Adele's sales are slowly slipping but still strong enough to earn double platinum status in just 3 weeks. Unlike in the UK, Justin Bieber's "Sorry" is still a decent way behind, only around 60% on iTunes at the moment. "The Trouble With Us" gets Chet Faker his 2nd top 10 hit this year, and leaps over "Whip It!" which ends its 4 week run at #11. Coldplay debut at #33 which leaves a bit to be desired after "Magic" started its run at #17 and then jumped to #6. After two weeks of being mysteriously denied from the chart, Avicii finally debuts with "Broken Arrows", which is the second top 50 hit from "Stories" as "For A Better Day" narrowly missed the top 50. Meanwhile happy birthday to "Uptown Funk" which has now amassed 52 consecutive weeks in the top 50. If it can stay another week, it'll tie for the most weeks in, but it may have trouble as its streaming is looking a bit shaky now. Of course, being the big hit that it is, it could potentially climb back up around Christmas time.

On the album chart, after week after week of different albums at the top, the new Elvis Presley compilation does the unthinkable and spends 2 weeks in a row at #1. In doing so, it stops Little Mix from getting their first #1 album, although they do improve upon the #4 peak of "Salute". Ellie Goulding also narrowly improves upon the #4 peak of "Halcyon Days", landing at #3. Local favourites Birds of Tokyo (with a greatest hits compilation) and Sarah Blasko both get their 4th top 10 albums this week. Next week is the big battle. Justin Bieber has only had 2 #1 albums with "My Worlds" and "Believe", but has performed significantly better on the charts this year than One Direction, who have had all of their albums go to #1. One Direction have probably had way more pre-orders just because of how long it's been available, but Justin is leading on iTunes at the moment. Also if Wikipedia is to be trusted, there'll be a One Direction performance on X Factor this week, it's really too close to call.

Welcome to Justin Bieber week :P The release of "Purpose" sees 7 debuts in the top 100, and Justin has 8 tracks in the top 50. Aside from that, X Factor season is coming to a close which of course means a new Guy Sebastian single in the charts, "Black & Blue" debuts at #8 as a heavy victim of streaming & a crowded section of the chart; if I'm not mistaken it was the 9th highest selling song of the week. On the other hand, despite probably worse streaming figures, local hardcore outfit The Amity Affliction get their first top 20 hit with their new single, also impressive as their past top 50 hits benefitted from when insta-grat sales were counted. Missy Elliott has her first top 50 hit in over 9 years this week. Lots of older hits that were clogging up the #41-#50 section on Spotify (and benefitting from people who just play the chart) had a rude awakening when all the Bieber/1D shoved them out of place. One such hit (although it did slip out briefly before) was "Uptown Funk" which finally has streaming not on its side, and is out of the top 50 for the first time ever. It could return with the Christmas season which would give it the record for most weeks in the top 50.

On the album chart, Justin notches up his 3rd #1, in doing so gives 1D their first non-#1 album ("Up All Night" of course climbed to #1, but odds are considerably against their favour to repeat this). Ed Sheeran benefits well with the re-package of "x" pushing it to its highest position in several months. Next week, spoiler alert:

Adele will be #1

Even though she's never toured here, Australia's love of Adele seemingly knows no bounds. "Hello" continues its reign at #1 and looks to do so again next week (maybe a few thousand copies ahead of "Love Yourself"). Despite the non-streaming, she even picks up 5 new entries from "25" and 2 re-entries from "21". "Skyfall" and "Make You Feel My Love", the latter of which has never charted here, are egregiously absent. The latest season of The X Factor Australia wraps up and perhaps unsurprisingly, Cyrus was the winner. Unfortunately for him though, his winning single "Stone" 'only' comes in at #4, the lowest peak for an X Factor winner since 2010. It will have trouble even maintaining that as it's not really catching on with Spotify and is slipping on iTunes fast. Unfortunately, not even Australia is safe from the evil forces of X Factor making "Jealous" a thing, as it was performed by Cyrus on the show for a second time and is now back in the top 50. Prepare for chaos next week as we see the effects of Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran & Rudimental all on tour here, as well as the post-ARIA Awards chart boosts.

On the album chart, the most predictable #1 ever is indeed #1. What might not have been predictable are the sales that achieved it. "25" goes triple platinum instantly, which strongly suggests it's the biggest sales week for an album ever, beating out Susan Boyle's end of year rush in 2009. As was announced at the ARIA Awards, Ed Sheeran receives a newly introduced Diamond sales award for "x" meaning that it's sold 500,000 copies (just a little over 7xPlatinum). It seems to not be a retroactive award though, as "Christmas" & "21" are both also in the top 10 this week and retain their multi-platinum status (which are both higher than "x"). Enya has her 8th top 10 album, now 5 of which have peaked at #7 or #8. There don't seem to be many major new releases for next week so obviously Adele will retain #1, and the aforementioned tours/awards will provide sizeable boosts.

I think Delta Goodrem may also have went triple platinum in her first week with Mistaken Identity?
I'm a bit surprised that the Diamond award is at 500k. I would have at least thought it would be at 700k so that 10x Platinum would become Diamond like the US. It would be interesting to see if Buble and Adele will get their awards as well as they have sold way past the new threshold, like you said. Ed would have received it since he performed at the ARIAs. I remember when the ARIAs used to have awards for Highest Selling Single/Album for Aussie artists.

I believe you are right. This all seems to be moot anyway for Adele as it turns out she sold around 126K, which is about 40K behind the record sales week and debut.

Adele has held the #1 spot for 6 straight weeks now, but it looks like it'll be her last. Justin Bieber was a mere 250 sales from #1 this week, and is only continuing his momentum in sales & streams. Miraculously, Duke Dumont has a top 5 hit here with "Ocean Drive", and with Stereosonic in town, DJ Snake may get a 2nd top 10 hit with "Middle" which hits #19 this week. A big effect on the chart is seen with the aftermath of the 2015 ARIA Awards, with many of the performing artists re-entering the charts. Most notably, Hall of Fame inductee Tina Arena did a performance of her 1994 smash "Chains" alongside Jessica Mauboy & The Veronicas, and a studio recording of it comes in at #14. "Uptown Funk" climbs back into the top 50 for a 53rd non-consecutive week, which gives it the tied record with Bruce Springsteen & LMFAO. It may very well best both of them next week.

On the album chart, Adele still commands a huge lead as she nearly does platinum figures again this week. She may face competition next week from Coldplay who briefly knocked her off #1 on the album chart. Troye Sivan's EP hit #1 earlier this year but he'll be lucky to even land at #3 this week with his album due to just how tight the competition is.

With no surprise, Justin Bieber gets his 2nd #1 single with "Love Yourself". A position it looks likely to hold for a while as there's no real competition unless Adele regains momentum. DJ Snake has recently been in the country and this week gets his second ever top 10 hit after "Lean On" (both "Turn Down For What" & "You Know You Like It" barely missed the top 10). Getting a 4th top 10 hit are one of the highest selling groups of the last 10 years here, Hilltop Hoods, who have had a top 10 hit on every album they've put out since 2009. Sigala narrowly misses out on getting his first, but "Sweet Lovin'" looks to climb there next week anyhow, provided his streams are counted (which they egregiously weren't for "Easy Love"). Marcus Marr & Chet Faker should probably be back in the top 10, but in a classic silly chart mishap, the sales of their newly released EP have been counted separately so that is sitting inside the top 50 while "The Trouble With Us" drops. Coldplay's album release gets "Adventure Of A Lifetime" into the top 20, and being promoted on the iTunes frontpage has sent Lost Frequencies from nowhere to finally hitting the top 40 with "Reality".

On the album chart, Adele is #1 for a 3rd week which means that Coldplay have missed #1 for only the second time ("Parachutes" also peaked at #2). As predicted, the heavy sales climate means that Troye Sivan can only reach #6 with his debut album. But if it helps him pick up more overall sales it's probably a good move. An example of a bad move would be from whoever decided to put X Factor winner Cyrus's debut album out on a Wednesday, wasting all the pre-order sales on a week with only 2 days to pick up new sales. As such he only comes in at #14 so unless he climbs, he'll be the first X Factor winner this decade to miss the top 10.
