An article about Orson from The Ilford Recorder.

Earth calling Orson

10 August 2006

Orson

ONE of the biggest success stories of the past 12 months has been the arrival of Orson, the behatted rock whippersnappers from Hollywood, who have found their spiritual home in Britain.

In the autumn, Orson decided to gamble on a trip across the Atlantic to Manchester to play at the In The City conference and what resulted is the stuff of legend.

Virtually unknown outside California, they closed the year with a deal with Mercury Records and as support on Duran Duran's winter arena tour.

But even that couldn't prepare them for what lay in store in 2006.

Having gone back for "the holidays" (that's Christmas and New Year to me and you), they returned to the UK to see their debut single, No Tomorrow, hit number one and then repeated the feat with album Bright Idea in May.

Since then, they have chosen to stay in the UK and are on a major tour of Europe with Robbie Williams, even managing to win over his notoriously intolerant fans. :o The tour culminates in five nights at Milton Keynes Bowl in September.

The Robster is allowing them the day off on Saturday, August 19, to play at the V festival, Chelmsford.

Drummer Christopher Cano said: "Festivals are great fun - indoors or outdoors, it's just a gig and we love all gigs.

"It's been such an amazing year and we're just loving every minute of it. It all took us by surprise. It was just a case of being in the right place at the right time and going with it."

So what is the secret of their success?

Orson play what their singer Jason Pebworth calls "two-guitar power-pop", or, equally simply, "rock and roll that girls can dance to". And it is that danceability that sets them apart from some of the more turgid acts on the rock circuit.

Jason said: "We play guitar rock but we have that rump-shaking quality to our rhythm section, like an R&B feel.

" When you listen to Led Zeppelin, for all their rockin', they made you want to dance. And that's what we're aiming for. It's great to see people dancing at a rock and roll show.

"And if you can get girls into your music, guys will follow..."

For a band named after someone as intellectually brilliant as Orson Welles, the songs are somewhat shallow, being mostly about girls, about falling in or falling out of love. But hey they're just having fun.

Orson play V on August 19, The Forum, Kentish Town on October 18 and Cliffs Pavilion, Southend, on October 29.

I didn't know I was notorious or intolerant

I've heard they are supposed to be rubbish, basement jaxx being far better.

But what do I know, haven't heard them yet :P Have that pleasure to come ;)

Obviously more people are going to perfer Sexyback cause it is a safe song while Rudebox is extremly different and is'nt as easy to like imo. -_-

it must be me then, I got fed up with Basement Jaxx after the first couple of songs. Sounded all the same to me but they added a few touches of colour and humour to be fair.

I haven't seen Orson yet, I am really looking forward to it. I loved their first single so I am hoping I won't be disappointed.

Oh yes, for what it is worth and I know it is not alot. Sexyback for me is boring I don't understand all the hype around it.

I don't 'get' Sexyback either. It all sounds very boring and repetitive to me.

I don't get SexyBack either, but as you said there's loads of hype around it (our lovely Bizarre Vicky has also helped to it... <_< ) and JT did a lot of promo, which is why it's going to be pretty successfull I think.

And he's also got the bonus of being a US sperstar. Mr. Timberlake is just very trendy at the moment...

And, well, I wouldn't say Rob is totally out (he never is for me, needless to say), but I wouldn't say he is very in either these days. I'm not even sure if it has only to do with Rudebox, I've had a feeling for quite a time that the general public in the UK is a bit fed up with him

Anyone know when SexyBack is released? I'm sure it must be before Rudebox. But even if, I'm afraid the press will make comparisons about sales figures between the two singles. Bet they're gonna love this, VN in particular

28 August I think monsoon.

I do have to agree with you though about the UK and Rob..oh well diss our own, we are very good at that, or rather the press is.

J Timberlake may be a US superstar, but he doesn't sell out the stadiums that our UK superstar does.

VN knows that, but she would probably rather choke than have to admit it. :puke2:

Let three entertain you

The real thing and two passable imitations shape up for city's big showbiz dates

By Paul Robinson

IT'S a tale of not one, not two, but THREE Robbies.

Robbie number one is, of course, Mr Williams himself, the pop superstar playing two huge gigs at Roundhay Park in Leeds next month.

Tickets for the shows are like gold dust – which is where Robbie number two comes in.

He is Paul Warren, a tribute act who has dashed to the rescue of fans heartbroken by the prospect of missing out on all the excitement at Roundhay.

Paul will be strutting his stuff as Robbie at the Queens Hotel in Leeds on Saturday, September 9 – the same night as the genuine article's second concert in the park.

Around 400 people are expected to pack into the hotel's ballroom for dinner before the 35-year-old dad of two arrives on stage in his alter ego's trademark flamboyant style.

Paul told the YEP: "I think it will be the next best thing to actually seeing Robbie in the flesh.

"Hopefully, if people are coming along feeling a little bit disappointed about not being at Roundhay then we can cheer them up a bit."

And Robbie number three?

That's Dave Brisk, who also earns a crust impersonating the man behind mammoth hits like Angels and Let Me Entertain You.

Dave, 22, of Rothwell, won't be working on the evening of September 9, though.

Instead he'll be a face in the crowd at...yes, you guessed it, Robbie's concert at Roundhay.

Dave might not be in the best mood, however, as he admits he doesn't actually like the former Take That pin-up that much.

Moves

He said: "My girlfriend's a massive fan, but I'm not too bothered, really. It will be the first time I've caught him live, so at least I might get the chance to pick up some new moves!"

Meanwhile, Robbie's 90,000-capacity shows on September 8 and 9 have set cash tills ringing in hotels across Leeds.

Virtually every room in the city is booked up for those two nights, according to Alan Cass, sales manager at the Queens.

He said: "The only person who could probably get one now is Robbie. No-one seems to know where he's going to be staying over that weekend, though – or they're not saying!"

I think this report is a load of hooey. From what I remember, Robbie isn't even supposed to be playing in this golf thing. He is only spectating (like he did last year).

And another thing, it's a Europe v USA Tournament so why would Robbie and Gary be on opposing Teams?

Cack. -_-

Robbie Williams And Gary Barlow To Go Head To Head

During celebrity golf tournament...

By: Lowri Williams on 8/13/2006

Popstar Robbie Williams is said to be gutted after finding out that his former band mate, Gary Barlow will be competing directly against him in a forthcoming celebrity golf tournament.

The tournament, hosted by Ant and Dec, is to be shown on ITV later this month and Robbie has taken time out from his current ‘Close Encounters’ European tour.

A source told the Daily Star: “Robbie is miffed that Ant and Dec didn’t tell him themselves. He and Gary are still very awkward around each other.â€

Isn’t it time these two buried the hatchet once and for all
