Robbie Williams cancels gigs

Michelle Zhang

2006-09-15

BRITISH pop star Robbie Williams has canceled all four concerts in Asia for his Close Encounters World Tour, including his Shanghai gig on November 4.

In Good Company, Williams' management firm, said in a statement that the singer had decided not to play Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore because "it became clear that the stress and exhaustion of the Asian tour coming shortly after the end of the European and South American dates would seriously impact his health."

"Throughout the summer Robbie Williams has performed in more than 40 shows around the world to more than 3 million people," the company said.

The statement was sent to China West Entertainment, one of the Shanghai concert's organizers, yesterday evening. The company refused to say how much it had invested in the concert.

Tickets for the Shanghai concert were supposed to officially go on sale yesterday. Zhou Yucheng from Shanghai Oriental Pearl Live Nation Entertainment and Sports Co Ltd, another organizer of the concert, said they hadn't taken any money for tickets.

Tickets for Williams' show in Hong Kong on November 10 have already been sold out.

I'm actually relieved...if he's worried about his health, then I am too.

Well I hope he does take a decent rest between S. America and Australia. And this 'rest' time ain't going to be used to promote the new album. <_<

I'm not being cynical. I think he took on far too much in too short a period of time. But for the sake of the poor sods who've already bought tickets I sincerely hope the health reason is genuine.

( That sounds bad. I don't mean I hope he is really ill. Oh I don't know what I mean..... I'll shut up now).

Yip. It seems Official. All Asian dates have been removed from the Tour Diary on the Official Site.

That's a real shame, I feel sorry for the people that were hoping to see him.

His health comes first and true Robbie fans will understand that. Maybe he will tour there at a later date in the future, when his schedule isnt too hectic

Oh good, I thought I was going BLIND!

 No, we have it to archive all Robbie news and will probebly put other things in here over time ^_^

Do we get any good news these days...?

Oh yeah, the Sky ratings one, thank goodness for that :)

I've started to worry already a while ago and I do even more now about the Asian tour leg being cancelled.

It's just all too much. Not the concerts alone, also the album being released while the tour is still going

(em, hopefully  ). He should have done his tour, take a few months break after that and then release the album and promote it plus singles properly, not this half-hearted "promotion" if any at all like for Rudebox. -_- The c**p he's getting from the press won't help either, in the end he just is very sensitive and in some way it's getting to him I guess :(

Wonder if the tabloids are going to run this story (concerts cancelled) tomorrow, I'm already preparing myself for it <_<

Hope he will get through the rest of the tour without major health problems, a longer break after the American dates will sure do the boy good.

I am really worried about him

I can't even imagine what sort of dark place his head is in at the moment and is expected to get up for 5 nights at MK and "entertain" his home crowd. For him to cancel concerts is a very bad sign for his mental health.

I am feeling gutted about everything at the moment.

I really don't know what is going on Suse.

I thought I read on another fansite tonight (maybe RWAP?) that the launch party for Rudebox has been cancelled as he's flying to Mexico straight after the MK gigs to do promo work there. This doesn't make sense. If he's cancelling concerts because he's ill why the heck isn't he relaxing at home in the couple of weeks before he starts his S. American Tour? Why is he heading off to Mehico for promotional stuff?

I really want to hear the feedback from fans of the MK concerts.

Sorry but this made me laugh. And I need a laugh tonight.

Career goes on ice for a Gisborne chef

by Martin Gibson

Friday, 15 September, 2006

RAY Smith’s career as a chef has had him rubbing shoulders with rock stars, multimillionaires and the Greek Mafia — and now it’s taking him to the Antarctic for a year.

He has been chosen to be chef for the New Zealand scientific team, spending 13 months at McMurdo Station in Antarctica.

Antarctica’s largest community, McMurdo Station is built on the bare volcanic rock of Ross Island, the farthest-south solid ground accessible by ship.

During summer, when it is light the whole time, the base is alive with scientists and the temperature is between zero and minus 20 degrees. In winter, it is dark for six months, with temperatures as low as minus 80 degrees.

Braving those conditions is a staff of 15 — mostly engineers and maintenance staff. It will be Smith’s job to feed them.

He is well qualified. After finishing a diploma at Tairawhiti Polytechnic in 1999, Smith did the 3000 hours work needed to get his catering and cookery certificate during an eight-month journey that took him from Cape Reinga to Stewart Island.

For the past six years he has spent much of his time in Queenstown, "cooking and snowboarding".

One of his jobs was at the $22 million Blanket Bay lodge built by the chief executive of jean makers Levi. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston stayed there, as did British pop star Robbie Williams who "was mad . . . he spent a lot of the time pretending he was a bell-boy".

Then there was the time working in a Sydney restaurant owned by Greek gangsters — one of whom was later shot dead in a business dispute.

Mr Smith returned to Gisborne from Ohakune in 2003 after being injured when a fellow snowboarder’s board sliced through the tendon above his right knee.

This led to a two-year rehabilitation in Gisborne — his father Nisbet teaching him metalworking, welding and rural short courses, again at Tairawhiti Polytechnic.

"I think that was one of the big factors in getting me selected for this Antarctic trip. They wanted a jack-of-all-trades."

Ray Smith admits it is going to be a long winter, during which "I might make a suit of Samurai armour".

But come summer there will be plenty to do.

There will be the chance to go on excursions, from crevasse-walking to heli-skiing at Mt Erebus.

"I’m also really looking forward to speaking with all of those scientists about climate change. NASA is there studying a red algae that grows on the ice — they think it could be used as a precursor to life on Mars."

Mr Smith left for Auckland yesterday, then it’s down to Christchurch for three weeks of intensive training in firefighting, outdoor first aid, climbing and using GPS and emergency beacons.

Then he gets in a Hercules for a nine-hour flight to Antarctica — his home for the next 13 months

LISTENING to Robbie Williams during sex enhances the experience, says a study.

Professor Werner Habermehl, of Hamburg University, found that listening to music causes the pleasure hormone endorphin to be released into the bloodstream.

Music by Robbie and Mozart were among the most stimulative, causing couples to lose their inhibitions.

:P Especially if it's Robbie you'e having sex with ;)

:hithead: :hithead: ^_^

well it was first said robbie´s music helps kids learn better, but this is more interesting!!

Elton John: My lost friends

By VICTORIA NEWTON

Showbiz Editor

September 15, 2006

ELTON JOHN has told of his trauma at losing many close pals including Princess Diana, Freddie Mercury and John Lennon.

And the death that haunts him most is that of his best friend, fashion designer Gianni Versace, shot dead in Miami in 1997.

Elton poured out his heart as he chatted exclusively to me about his new album, The Captain And The Kid, in his plush West London home.

It is a follow-up to his 1975 classic, Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy, and the most moving track is one all about loss, called Blues Never Fade Away.

The 59-year-old star says: “This song is about how life is so unfair when great people go and others don’t. The third verse is about Gianni, the unfairness of it all and how the pain never goes away.

“There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think of people like Gianni and Diana and John Lennon and other friends who have gone needlessly.

“Two of my best friends have been murdered on their doorsteps in America — I don’t think many people can say that.

“There’s always some little memory that brings you back to it. I miss John Lennon’s laugh and every day I wish Gianni was alive because we were soul mates.â€

There’s a break in Elton’s voice when he talks about Gianni and he rubs his eyes, which are masked by a pair of trademark shades.

Another death which devastated him was that of pal Freddie Mercury, who died of AIDS in 1991. Elton believes the only star to come close to him in terms of talent and popularity is Robbie Williams.

He says: “We haven’t really had anyone as outrageous as Freddie and his Britishness was part of what made him so great. People like Prince are equally as talented but nowhere near as outrageous.

“Robbie Williams has done it to a certain extent and he has that British attitude that people love.

“Robbie is the biggest solo star in the world right now and he should be proud of that.

“He’s doing something daring with his music. He’s trying new things and I respect him for it.

“Rudebox (Robbie’s new album) isn’t really my taste but he’s done all his Robbie Williams albums, now he’s trying something different.â€

Elton and Robbie haven’t always seen eye to eye — such as when Robbie accused the flamboyant singer of “kidnapping†him when Elton sent him to a rehab clinic to help him get off drugs in 1997.

And Elton has since referred to Robbie as being “not a well budgie.â€

The pair haven’t spoken for years but Elton still has some good advice for his ex-pal, which he says he learned from spending time in therapy for his addictions to booze and cocaine.

He reckons Robbie should stop obsessing about getting even with old enemies such as Take That manager Nigel Martin-Smith.

He says: “I wish he would please just let it all go.

“All it is doing is burning a hole inside of him, eating him up, making him angry and miserable.

“He should give himself a pat on the back and be proud of what he’s achieved. He’s proved himself — he doesn’t have to do it any more. He’s the No 1 star in the world.

“He should just let the other s*** go and if he can’t, then he needs to see someone and talk about it.

“It’s one of the things I learned from getting sober — to just let the past go.â€

There is no one better qualified than Elton to hand out advice on the pitfalls of fame — because he’s seen and done it all.

Drink, drugs, depression, suicide attempts — you name it.

Thankfully he came through the other side, got sober and settled down with long-term partner David Furnish, to whom he is now “marriedâ€.

And now, as he prepares to turn 60 next year, it is obvious that Elton is the happiest he has ever been.

To celebrate his milestone Elton is planning a special performance at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

It will be his 60th show at the venue — a record no other artist has come close to. The thing that amazes me about Elton is his youthful outlook on life.

He is so obsessed with music that there isn’t an album he hasn’t got, or a new artist he doesn’t know about.

He is a huge fan of bands such as the Arctic Monkeys and The Feeling, and he thinks Nelly Furtado’s Maneater is one of the best songs of the year.

He thinks Bob Dylan got it all wrong when he said all modern records are “atrocious.â€

Elton says: “He obviously doesn’t listen to as much music as I do. I understand where Dylan is coming from but I don’t think he listens to enough modern music.

“I love hip-hop, I love the beats, that’s why I’m doing a hip-hop album.

“I spoke to Eminem last week. He’s not retired but he’s been through a hell of a year. I was due to fly to Detroit to write some songs with him on the day that his friend Proof was shot. But it didn’t happen due to the tragic circumstances.

“But I’m working with him and Pharrell (Williams) and others on a new album.â€

When I ask if Elton would be embarrassing himself by rapping on the album, he jokes: “The only thing that I will be rapping, dear, are Christmas presents!â€

Besides music, his other big passion is soccer — and he has typically strong views about former England boss Sven Goran Eriksson. Elton, a former director at his beloved Watford FC, says: “Sven had no passion — there was no sweat on his shirt. I watched (Portugal coach) big Phil Scolari and he was going nuts with passion. No wonder he’s beaten us twice now.

“I think the players had too much power under Sven. He was weak and there wasn’t enough discipline.â€

But Elton is pleased that new boss Steve McClaren has seen some sense — even if it did mean dropping Elt’s old pal David Beckham as captain.

He says: “I agree with the new manager that there shouldn’t be all this celebrity surrounding our players. The WAGS shouldn’t have been at the World Cup. You have to make sacrifices if you want to be successful and if it means being away from your wife for four weeks then so be it.â€

Elton says David would have been “gutted†about being axed, but adds it may give him the “kick up the pants†he needs to get back in the team.

The singer is godfather to the Beckhams’ sons Brooklyn and Romeo and has been close friends with the family for years.

They haven’t seen each other for a long while but Elton says he sent a message of support to David when he was given the England bombshell.

He says: “David put his heart and soul into being an England player and I know he was so proud to be the England captain so it has got to have hurt him a lot.

“He stood down as captain in a very elegant way, before he was booted out, but I think he was very close to Sven and that didn’t help. But England have a terrific captain in John Terry.â€
