Maybe we could discuss how they think Take That is unsuitable to play when it was number one yet they have guests like David Attenborough (Seriously??) and over Xmas they played some very old songs.

it's about what/who they think appeals to their target audience (15-30 year olds). Not sure how David Attenborough fits that category but young people certainly like the christmas classics (Mariah, Pogues, Wham) (and I imagine R1 would get lots of requests to play christmas music in December) and Take That are 'too R2' for their listeners.

They get many different guests in, including those who they don't playlist. I know Amelia Lily, Union J, Nicole Scherzinger, etc. have all been to R1 in the past year or so and did not get playlisted with the single they were promoting. David Attenborough being on there isn't relevant to the kind of music they playlist.

Take That really don't scream Radio 1 at all to me, everything about them is very Radio 2 imo.

David Attenborough in a music discussion

I think with the old recurring songs they play its a simple as the shows producer picks the music on the show and they have a group of 20-40 songs!

David Attenborough is probably one of the most recognisable and well known people alive in Britain today by those young and old. Why would any radio station not want him as a guest?

As for the Christmas classics, as has been seen, they are streamed regularly over the Christmas period which I think demonstrates a considerable appeal to a younger audience.

Indeed on the Christmas songs issue they gain more listeners if they play Christmas songs in December surely wouldn't they?

I remember around the start of the century radio 1 wouldn't play many Christmas songs until 15th December onward(beforehand they would maybe play Mariah/The Pogues once a day). Now they seem to play a broader range of classics like Greg Lake, Jona Lewie and Shaky!

Some of R2 music can appeal to R1 i.e. Paloma Faith, James Blunt and Take that to name a few. So I don't get why R1 snub them. I'm 18 I would love to hear them on R1 and I am part of R1's demographic. So might just be my opinion.

Thing with radio 1 is they are always trying to find 'New' music so singer song writers come and go like there's no tomorrow - for example the big act of last year was Sam Smith who they play to death and now this year it seems to be going to be James Bay who no doubt will regularly A listed with all his material until we are sick to death of it(so much so that I would t be surprised to see Hold Back the River re released in 12 months time in a similar way to other rerelease songs recently).

That's why a lot of older versions of the above like James Blunt etc come and go quite quickly and only certain artists can maintain a radio 1 career support beyond album 3/4!

Talking of Radio 1 repeating old songs, they were obsessed with "I Need a Doctor" for a while.

I noticed that as well. Last year, they played 'We Own It' by 2 Chainz a hell of a lot too, as well as 'Disco Love' by The Saturdays (I swear I'd hear it every single day, but never 'What About Us', strangely enough. Oh and it was around the time that they began snubbing them, which made it even more odd.). 'Louder' by Neon Jungle seems to get a disproportionate amount of spins too, considering it was a #14 smash.

I really like they support the new artists I really champion that but would be nice if they support the older sort of artists that can also sound like R1 style. Acts can come and go but what about the ones who are having a great career that R1 snub

Indeed I agree a mix of older and newer artists would be nice and also fairer. They should be judged by the current musical output too.

Agreed, Just sometimes feels like they are not reaching all of their audiences sometimes

Yes I've noticed that one too!

I think that's the problem, there should be more than 20-40 older songs in that group, there are literally hundreds they could choose from. For example, going back to my point about 'Midnight City', Skrillex's 'Breakn' A Sweat' was added to the playlist on the same day as 'Midnight City' (and in fact was added straight to the A-list, the last song to achieve that feat), which would make it an ideal candidate for an older favourite... yet I never hear them play that.

I regularly seem to catch Radio 1 when they spot-play Tik Tok and I'm Not Alone, seems odd that Kesha is one of their back catalogue plays but I'm not complaining!

I also noticed the overplay of "We Own It" too!

R1 LOVE 'We Own It', you're right!

I've noticed 'Louder' too. Seems to have replaced 'Disco Love' as a random minor pop girlband hit that they play ages afterwards (They played Disco Love for over a year - more spins altogether when it was off the playlist than when it was on!)

Radio 1's Last.fm collates everything they play, so it may be interesting to see the frequency they've played those two. :P

Wow. Looking at that, over the last few months they've played:

- 'Watercolour' by Pendulum about once a week

- 'Tik Tok' by Ke$ha about once a week

- 'Midnight City' was played EIGHT times in October and already twice in January!

Ridiculous...
