I REALLY hope she can better Ultraviolence. (no offence UV)
I find it bizarre how disliked and neglected Ultraviolence is on here. It garnered a much better critical reception than Born to Die did, and it's much more accomplished, artistically honed and rooted, and mature than Born to Die. I think Born to Die had a lot more hype and commercial push which I feel somewhat effects people's preferences on here, being a chart forum and all. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong

420 blaze it!!

Agreed with everyone else aboot how Ultraveeolence was a poile of shet and really bland and boring, with the same rehashed ideas from BTD (but worse) and nothing new.

Glad she's going back to the BTD sound!!

I've been completely disinterested since West Coast.

Ultraviolence does get an unfair rep. In some way it is a bit redundant for her and the whole era did kind of scream "Yes, this time around I'm EVEN MORE depressed" which obviously didn't show much progression, but musically I thought she changed it up hugely (much more than she did from BTD to Paradise).

I think if there was a problem with that album it's that when she wasn't being too different from BTD, the songs didn't really have enough to make you want to listen to them over her older tracks. Songs like 'Sad Girl'/'Cruel World' were pretty atrocious (and sounded like Lana wrote them in about 30 seconds to boot...) but 'West Coast' was unlike anything she'd done before and so were others ('Brooklyn Baby' is even happy!).

The main fault for me was that she had a really amazing chilled/summery sound locked down in some of the best songs on the album ('Brooklyn Baby', 'West Coast' and 'Florida Kilos' are great examples + 'Shades of Cool' for a ballad) but kind of wandered from that for no real reason. The album lacked the focus BTD largely had and it felt like a missed opportunity to me for that reason. I do think it's a great album with a bunch of stunning tracks but if it were more cohesive it'd get a lot more love.

I feel that people saying that "it's BTD but worse" is very redundant because Lana has her signature subject of lyrical content, it's present throughout all her music before and after BTD. I honestly don't see how other than the lyrics, they are similar albums, Ultraviolence is much more rock-rooted being almost solely produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, where BTD was essentially baroque pop. Lana is much more bolder and more raw and emotional in her vocal delivery on Ultraviolence as well, I mean 'Shades of Cool' alone speaks for itself

Ultraviolence is probably the most depressing album I've ever heard but that's exactly why I love it so much

Yes, I did enjoy Ultraviolence to a point. Born To Did/Paradise were just too utterly perfect for me. 'Ride', 'Born to Die' and 'National Anthem' are three of my favourite songs of all time.

This for me as well

Even though it is depressing, I just find it such a beautiful album with so many gems on me. West coast is a really original amazing track and I love the many styles incorparated (is that a word) into it. Ultraviolence is so haunting and utterly beautiful while money power glory is another track I find beautiful and the style of the song works perfectly with the lyrics. f***ed my way to the top is another one of my favourites- that this is my show part around there feels so powerful and breathtaking whereas tracks like shades of cool are really nice and show of Lana's vocal talents.

My only minor complaint about UV is that a couple of the tracks do go on a bit too long and a couple are bit forgettable but other than that is it perfect for me

I can listen to Ultraviolence (usually in the background because it really cannot solely hold my attention) and appreciate the artistry and quality of it and enjoy it, but then I think of tracks like National Anthem, Dark Paradise, Born To Die, Video Games, Summertime Sadness, Off To The Races and Without You - all of which are basically modern classics - and I just feel as if I wanted so much more from Ultraviolence.

Sad Girl was my favourite off Ultraviolence!! Black Beauty and West Coast too! Loved the album. Reminds me so much of last Summer. Love how she's so unashamedly miserable on Sad Girl. Just love the characters she plays in her songs.

Guns and Roses is shocking though

Hopefully this album will be as good as 'Born To Die'. It took me a while, but it became one of my favourite albums just before 'Ultraviolence' was released, which was a massive disappointment. So awful.

Mine too <3

Ultraveeolence remains unlistenable though.

Ultraviolence is a body of work. People don't like it because it's a body of work.

No need for pretenses. People don't like it because it's crap, bar 4-5 tracks.

There's nothing "artistically rooted" about Ultraviolence. It's the ultimate style over substance album, poorly written songs masquerading as deep because they're all down tempo and backed by rock instrumentation. Born to Die managed to balance the darkness of her lyrics with glorious, cinematic production and soaring melodies. UV is nothing. It's just dark for the sake of it. It contains precisely one memorable song, which is the lead single which not coincidentally sounded nothing like the rest of the album.
Perhaps 2.5, because Sad Girl has an amazing middle 8 and Money Power Glory has a good chorus but shit verses.
