13 is pretty impressive! and ABBA out top in number ones is fabulous! 🤩

ABBA was very hit or miss act in GD.

Some their big singles (Fernando, Chiquitita, Lay All Your Love On Me) weren't include in my chart.

30th July 1995   I like a nice bit of cheese now and again, so I proudly announce Deuce top my chart this week in 1995 with a fab OTT slab, all melodramatic and passionately tuneful. By some distance

It's another week on top for Gangsta's Paradise, nothing able to shift it, seemingly, most likely contender Madonna up to 3 with You'll See, while lower down Saint Etienne, and Ace Of Base make inroads and Oasis still seem sluggish as release date gets nearer. The highest new netry is another D:Ream track I've forgotten - I'm not sure if Brian Cox was still touring with them at this time, his PhD must have been taking up his time! The Power is new at 32, which is a bit flattering, it's decent but not memorable.

M People cover The Small Faces' Itchycoo Park at 35, one I didn't see coming as a choice of dance song, but it was a step up on D:Ream, though obv not as great as the quirky original which went top 10 in early 1976 for me. Behind M People, Disco 2000 is a surprisngly low entry for Pulp - it was instantly catchy, but for some reason didn't click entirely 5 years early. Second best new entry of the week, though! Enya's back in at a suitably higher spot, 27, and Robson & Jerome grab a chart slot with thier least bad cover, Up On The Roof had never charted for me at this point, but I loved the Carole King & Gerry Goffin song, and this was the closest I had come to an excuse to chart it.

Bjork goes more obscure for her whimsical cover, It's Oh So Quiet going all 1940's big band, albeit in her own unique way, new at 45. The best new entry is Blur going melodic ballad again, The Universal at 53 is excellent and not as well-known as it should be. Whitney meanwhile drops a resonable effort in Exhale, in at 55, and then we get to the lesser-recalled as Bonnie Raitt & Bryan Adams rock-boogie Rock Steady, MN8 following up a chart-topper to lesser effect at 60, Indie Echobelly popping in for some Kerb crawling, Elvis barrel-scraping on his version of Twelfth Of Never, U2 having a diversion as The Passengers commentary of the Bosnian war brings in Brian Eno and Luciano Pavarotti. Hands up who had that combo getting together? Me, neither. Finally, Squeeze ride an Electric Train into my chart some 17 years after Take Me I'm Yours, and around the time I first saw them in concert I think.

It's a new entry at 1 in an otherwise quite chart week, as Michael Jackson bangs in with the epic Earth Song, spear-headed by the stunning Environmental promo video, underlining how humans are decimating the planet. Yes, it's overtly emotional and political - but it's entirely right, and it had my instant approval, and love. I have no time for anyone slagging it off for trying to make a point while they stand by and do nothing. Put up or shut up. By this time I'd already had 25 years of politicians ignoring environmentalists, and now there's another 30 years more on top and things get worse by the year. It seems at least a million UK people agreed with me by the new year, as sales of the single went through the roof, where the over-priced new album/hits album combo didn't. Michael Jackson's instant 12th solo number one, plus another 3 with the Jacksons.

This all bad news for Oasis who are denied getting a second number one with Wonderwall up to 2, future anthem of many a karaoke bar. Whatever was the first, but Saint Etienne grab another top 10, and UB40 an unexpected 15th year of top 10's with Until My Dying Day. Back in at 14 15 years later, Hungry Heart out-peaks its original run for Bruce Springsteen, but not by much, and Definition Of Sound had a good new entry with Pass The Vibes at 47, one ahead a Sentimental Deborah Cox, smooth r'n'b, but behind a New Age song at 26 from Sacred Spirit, Wishes Of Happiness And Prosperity, devoted to getting legal rights redress to Native Americans, and using traditional music sounds. I liked it. That just leaves The Original having a follow-up dance banger at 65.

It's 2 weeks on top for Earth Song, as Everything But The Girl get a late surge to 2 with their classic remix of Missing, for a pretty powerful top 4. Ace Of Base are back on top 10 form, meanwhile, as Lucky Love clicks properly and up to 5 for a 3rd top 10, just ahead of the charity Native American track at 6, and Enya also grabbing her 3rd solo top 10 with Anywhere Is. Tina Turner meanwhile takes her Bond theme to 8 for a top 10 run of 22 years since Nutbush City Limits became her one and only chart-topper, with the Ex. Bjork, meanwhile, in a very hectic top 10, grabs a quiet 3rd top 10 in the same week she grabs a 4th top 10 30 years later.

Highest new entry is an acoustic version of The Pretenders 1983 Christmas goodie 2000 Miles, at 27, Prince has a Gold record out at 32, and one of his better efforts of late, while Skee-Lo debuts with a catchy, quirky goodie I Wish at 38. Still fun that one. Norman Cook is second only to Jonathan King in the number of aliases he has charted with, this time it's Pizzaman, having a slice of Happiness at 41. Annie Lennox does Something So Right at 45 - she's covered Paul Simon!

Ant & Dec havent yet switched to their real names, but keep the surprsingly long run of hits coming with Perfect at 50, for them a real slowdown in tempo, and quite nice. I think if anyone ever played their hits (as if!) they might be surprised at the variety. That and the light vocals. Down lower end, Crystal Waters is Relax-ing, not Frankie Goes To Hollywood, at 56, Oleta Adams is resorting to a remix for Rhythm Of Life, and Frankie Knuckles is housing it up with Adeva on What Do You Want From Me at 65.

Others: Happy Clappers, I Believe are at 67, Therapy think about Diane, 68, neither of which I recall, Bon Jovi Lie To Me at 71, and ditto, while Sean MaGuire covers The Real Thing needlessly at 75. The Beautiful South and Erasure both pop up with new tracks that aren't generally remembered these days, Pretenders To The Throne, and Fingers And Thumbs. I will play them again if they get near the top end of my chart - at this point I don't know!

It's hectic at the top end as Earth Song gets 3 weeks on top and holds off an event - the first official Beatles single in 25 years. Free As A Bird was a cassette demo Yoko Ono gave to the fabs, along with Real Love and Now And Then, songs of John Lennon that weren't developed by the time of his murder in 1980, and together with mate Jeff Lynne they came up with 3 minor gems (eventually). The first two to appear on editions of double album Anthology series of 3 album releases featuring rare and alternative takes on catalogue Beatles stuff tarted up a bit. Free As A Bird had a nostalgic video, state of the art, and was promo'd to radio ahead of Anthology 1, with no single release to boost album sales week one. This was a bad mistake as it must have lost a lot of sales to the single when it came out week 2 or 3 and peaked at 2 in the chart instead of 1. That annoyed me, even if it was held off here by Earth Song as well! Real Love meanwhile pops in unofficially at 76 months ahead of its release on Anthology 2. Anthology 4 will be out in 2025 soon, with the revamped AI versions of John's vocal on these two tracks, and their 2023 chart-topper which has already been AI'd for crisper vocals.

Blur are up to 5, unlucky to get blocked with big releases, and Definition Of Sound also slot into the top 10 nicely. Lower down, Tina Arena covers Maria McKee, Roxette remix 1989's The Look, and fellow Scandi-pop The Wannadies return with Might Be Stars at 38. Jam & Spoon follow-up their top 10 with Angel for a spot of dance. at 40. Celine Dion is Misled at 47 - or as I pronounced it before I knew how to pronounce it in the early 70's: Myzulled. On the Country Music video channel Emmylou Harris' new album (which is great) Wrecking Ball debuts the title track (a Neil Young song) at 51 - Daniel Lanois of U2 fame produced, and as it wasnt available as a single I bought the album eventually, in Florida.

Simply Red are Remembering The First Time at 58, but I can only vaguely remember this song, no doubt pleasant as usual, Black Grape reference a 60's movie, Kelly's Heroes, Diana Ross claims she's gone, but she isn't, Boom Shake The Room gets a belated remix for no reason, and The Beatles take over my playlist. Quite right too.

Late 1995 charts always will remind me about one lady, who had both Oasis and Robson & Jerome at # 1 for five weeks (three weeks for Wonderful, two weeks for I Believe). She had very interesting music taste, loved oldies (Elvis, Cliff, Engelbert), but also Oasis, Divine Comedy and some boybands Westlife, Boyzone, Take That.

Earth Song is the best MJ single.

3rd December 1995

It's December and Michael Jackson's Earth Song is still holding off The Beatles "comeback" single, Oasis' Wonderwall and Blur's The Universal for one very epic top 4, while The Beatles next single gets an airing on Anthology and radio, allowing Real Love a quick entry at 76 as it wasnt eligible for the top 75 chart rules of the time. Silly me. Utah Saints meanwhile do a Crazy Horses remix for a 3rd chart run for the 23-year-old classic poprock environmental single. In at 7, as Prince gets a post-squiggle/symbol top 10 with Gold for a 13th year in a row. PJ & Duncan amaze me as they continue to drop decent little (and forgotten) varied singles, Perfect, the latest is up to 10. I must be one of the few people who preferred their pop star career to beloved variety entertainer hosts.

Oh, no! I can only apologise as Robson Jerome climb into the top 20 as I do love Up On The Roof, the song, if not their version. But they don't ruin it. Meanwhile Ali Campbell gives his little daughter a brief pop star outing on their version of the Frank & Nancy Sinatra classic, Something Stupid. In at 39, again cos I love the song, a chart-topper for me as it would have done in 1967 when I was a kiddie too. Scream is back for a 3rd chart run of the year, but I'll join them all together for a chart year-end. The Cardigans debut at 47 with Carnival, one I'd forgotten but it's quite pleasant and sets up big hits in the future.

David Bowie also drops in with a minor track that rings no bell, Strangers When We Meet - again it's quite pleasant, but wouldn't sound too out of place from Never Let You Down circa 1987. Janet Jackson has another recent entry as well as Scream , as her Luther Vandross smash has been remixed for another big chart run. One would have done on the whole though. Time for some cover versions: Mike Flowers Pops do Oasis, and it's rather fun, taking the piss and truning it into a mock 60's Easy Listening bit of fluff. Amusing.Paul Weller meanwhile tackles John Lennon's popular Beatles classic with some mates, Come Together, new at 68, lower than Boyzone doing Cat Steven's never-a-hit Father And Son for a huge UK smash. I remain less enamoured than most.

Down the bottom-end, Garbage, with Scotland's Shirley Mansun on vocals and a Nirvana link behind the scenes turn out to be a great 90's band, but Queer is in at a lowly 72 for now. Van Morrison, meanwhile tends to have lesser hits, if any, in my charts, but he sneaks in at 73 with No Religion, just ahead of a sweet duet between Cliff and Olivia, making it 3 decades of singing get-togethers since Livvie used to turn up on Cliff's TV shows, not to mention have Cliff's old mucker from The Shadows helping with songs for her. Michael Bolton has A Love So Beautiful at 75, covering Roy Orbison's fab ballad from his final album, written by Roy & ELO's Jeff Lynne. I'd stick with the original, but this isn't awful.

10th December 1995

It's 4 weeks on top for Earth Song as Oasis give up trying to catch Jacko, but Robson Jerome take a classic song to 5 - Up On The Roof, Goffin/King 60's gem, and Jerome will one day turn up in Game Of Thrones, so all is forgiven. New entries staright into the top 10 for Bel Canto, and the banging dance track We'Ve Got To Work It Out, never the bigger hit it should have been, and Marc Almond is still getting top 10's 14 years on from Tainted Love and his Trevor Horn resurgence. Child Star wasn't a hit, sadly, but it was good!

Mary J. Blige makes it two Carole King classic songs in the chart, as she dares to go where Aretha Franklin has already been - covering Natural Woman! New in at 17, bosh! Gary Glitter is on tour with Suzi Quatro, and bungs out an old classic instead of a fairly mundane newie this year, Hello Hello went top 3 in 1973, and is back at 32. The Lighthouse Family are Lifted at 34, the easy-listening radio-friendly regular suggests Lightweight Family might have been a better name.

Mayte is a Prince protege, so expect one hit and nothing much else, judging by previous, If Eye Love U Tonight, Oasis say Whatever, as they bounce back in again, Robert Palmer goes where Bruce Willis has gone before - covering The Staple Singers - and Bonnie Tyler goes where Air Supply have gone before - recording a Jim Steinman song from 1980. Be afraid: Maria Carey has joined with BoyzII men with a dastardly plan to stay on top of the US charts for most of 1996. They do, too, having lonooong previous runs. Finally, menswear, Morrissey and Eternal don't sparkle too much, the latter two being one-week wonders (for now).

17th December 1995

It's nearly Christmas and The Beatles finally get to the top spot, helped by the fab nostalgic video, Free As A Bird becoming their first "new" material to top since 1970, though many oldies had done it along the way, including most singles since Eleanor Rigby and a couple of earlier ones. Cher sets up a stall for 1996 as her wonderful One By One debuts at 7, great song and Cher is singing out of her usual range, which gives it a lot more emotion and impact. Meanwhile I buy the CD version of Hungry Heart in the bargain bins and it leaps back up to a new peak of 8 for Springsteen 15 years late. Pulp make it 3 out 3 top 10's with Disco 2000.

George Michael previews his forthcoming single for the new year, Jesus To A Child is a heartbreaking ballad about loss, and enters at 23 after a quiet few years bar live performance singles, Corona get another follow-up to their chart-topper, but I dont recall I Don't Wanna Be A Star! Seal, meanwhile, has a double A, I already have Prayer For The Dying so that takes the lead at 27. Madonna is still bunging out old singles and non-singles, this time it's the rather morose Oh Father, a Like A Prayer track that was a US single, but not a UK single, though it did chart for me, so 2nd time around it's in at 33.

Suggs has a track I've forgotten, The Tune escapes me, ironically, at 40, as LV does his own solo take on Gangsta's Paradise along with new track Throw Your Hands Up, and is rewarded with a number 50. Queen return with another single from their album of leftovers, A Winter's Tale not to be confused with Mike Batt's old song for David Essex, and about as Christmassy as this chart gets, bar Morten Harket's 1994 leftover. The Levellers' Just The One keeps their chart entries onward-facing at 59, while Pauline Henry's ongoing genre-hopping takes in Diana Ross' 1976 disco classic Love Hangover at 69.

24th December 1995

It's 2 weeks on top as The Beatles preside over the Christmas chart, with Steve Harley's 1975 classic back for another run, hitting 3 this time, and for the first time in decades 2 songs make my top 10 in 2 different versions: Wonderwall at 5 for Oasis, and Mike Flowers Pops at 8. I'm sure Noel & Liam loved the gag. Two versions of Gangsta's Paradise also join the club lower down.

In a not-very-tinsel-ey chart Dubstar are new at 59 with the good Not So Manic Now, and a tad higher solo act Blair debuts Life, Jimmy Nail sneaks Love into the chart - John Lennon's song had already charted for me - Shaggy drops a lesser-known track at 69, and an actual new christmas track is in at 72 for charity purposes. It has no life beyond the New Year into 1996 anywhere that I'm aware of though.

2 gigs this week, a spliff-filled Madness gig of men of a certain age po-going, and a Glam Rock Christmas annual goodtime with Gary Glitter guaranteeing a great night out. Suzi Quatro on support, though, had my seal of approval in my list of the best tracks those nights as best of the 3. I have my ticket for 2026's tour for Suzi now in her 70's. Mr Gadd these days can never guarantee he will be available free from His Majesty's Pleasure and in those days his exaggerated ego on stage was getting ever-more comical to watch.
