It's not a record, there has been an instance of a #1 and #2 selling exactly the same amount (Deee-Lite's 'Groove Is In The Heart' and I can't remember the song it tied with - EDIT: 'The Joker' by Steve Miller)

So how did they decide which should "officially" be #1? :thinking:

There was a chart rule around at the time which said that in the event of a tie, the record which had climbed most since the previous week would be higher. So Steve Miller was officially #1 and Deee-Lite had to settle for #2 (apparently they were quite annoyed about this :lol:). I think the rule has since been abolished, but these days there can never truly be a tie because sales are calculated to a number of decimal places and then rounded to the nearest unit.

Right so that's the combined chart cleared up :D but now there's the thing about sales only tie rankings :thinking:

Well personally if I had tied with another song for number one but got relegated to number two due to some stupid rule I'd get pretty annoyed too.

Well if I had it my way on a tie, I suppose I would take a few factors in account depending on which is appropriate. For example:

 

Which of the two was released sooner, i.e. if one was released a day later it would have done better getting sales in a shorter amount of time.

There's also many other factors I'd take into account but I can't remember them all atm ;)

it's still miles better than all of her last era though :magic: (imo of course) :P although I do agree that it sounds a little dated but it doesn't bother me in the slightest!

'Blank Space' missed out on #5 by ~0.1 sales (the equivalent of 10 streams), however these fractional 'sales' weren't necessarily derived from streaming alone... ;)

 

The OCC rarely gets 100% reporting from all the physical, digital, audio streaming companies on time to compile the chart, so they upweight data from earlier in the week to compensate, thus creating fractional sales which can be used to settle ties! :magic:
