I think they should show the Top Gear episodes but sack Clarkson for all future non-recorded episodes.

I don't even watch the show though but it seems unfair on the fans to lose the show cos of one of the hosts being an asshole

Clarkson's been an idiot too many times for him to be let off lightly, he deserves the suspension. The show should in theory go on though, even if it mines they have to cope without him for a while and it may not be anywhere near as popular (I would be absolutely fine with it going though, hate this show so much)

as long as the government (who control the BBC one way or another) agrees to not prosecute anyone who thumps their work colleagues, mates, strangers, family members and politicians. Ever. I think we'd all be happy with letting people get off hitting people as long as they are appearing to be anti-establishment, mildly amusing and irreplaceable to a show about cars.

Of course, if the person he allegedly thumped was a female producer, and he'd been famous in the 70's he'd have been done by Yewtree by now. It's official, hitting someone is a lesser crime than a grope - if only DLT had punched the young assistant everything would have been all right.

sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. So much for equality legislation: men are not equal under the law as victims, but more than equal as assailants of men.

Top Gear, BTW, is worth a fortune and Clarkson isn't going to live forever. There will be a new host sooner or later, and the show will survive because there are 800,000 petrol-heads to pick from, at least. Just email everyone who's signed up a job advert for the post.

There are some new developments over the last day or two regarding Clarkson.

He will return to the BBC to present an episode of Have I Got News For You when the show returns next month. Also, he's now threatening legal action against the BBC for slander due to that executive who compared him to Jimmy Saville.

He can threaten what he likes. The remarks about Savile were clearly a matter of opinion, so his chances of success are minimal.

As for HIGNFY, I suspect the BBC will ask for the invitation - issued before this latest furore - to be withdrawn.

Clarkson's a dick. He's using this to his advantage. The comments weren't comparing him to Savile - but comparing the apparent support Clarkson seems to be getting (even from the Prime Minister no less) to the support Savile got (and the unwillingness of ANYONE in any position of power to speak out about Savile).

This has turned out nicely for Clarkson though - it has turned HIM into the victim in this instead of the poor bast*rd he hit. Not only does Clarkson not get reprimanded or punished - he actually gets REWARDED for bullying and physically assaulting a person in the workplace. I think I'll go into work tomorrow and lamp one of my colleagues merely because they used the microwave when I wanted to use it for my hot meal.

Its a funny old world.

More updates:

  • Richard Hammond and James May refused an offer to finish the rest of the series by just having them two in the studio links
  • At a charity event, Clarkson suggested that he believed he would be sacked. He was there to offer to drive someone round the Top Gear track as part of an experience offered during the auction and stated "I didn't foresee my sacking, but I would like to do one last lap." "The BBC have f**ked themselves," Clarkson said. "It was a great show and they f**ked it up."

The arrogance of the man knows no bounds.

Mind you - I don't know who is worse - Clarkson or the two little jelly-fish weasels who present the show with him.

Well if they weren't planning to sack him, they will now. I don't think he's ever heard of the phrase "don't bite the hand which feeds you". Hopefully this is the end of his career, such an awful man.
I think he's trying to force their hand so he can openly pursue any other deals, or people will start to bring them to him. He's clearly going to get another show, probably on Sky, by the end of the year.
So a man who frequently Slags off other people can't take a negative comment. What a hypocrite. The words "overdue" and "comuppance" spring to mind. The vast majority of us manage not to belt work colleagues or the public despite genuine provocation as opposed to throwing a spoilt hissy fit cos he couldn't shift his overpaid ego out of a pub in time to get to a hotel meal on time. Never heard of takeaways obviously. Prima Donna.

Indeed. Even if he didn't thump his producer, his comments about the BBC should be sufficient for them to sack him. Anyone who supports him should try making similar comments about their employer to see where it gets them.

I think we are all forgetting that Clarkson is a very privileged, ex-public schoolboy who is used to people running around for him. I wouldn't be surprised if at home he has some little minion who wipes his arse for him every time he goes to the john. He believes his privilege puts him above everyone else and according to that petition - over a million people and the prime minister (well being an ex-public schoolboy he believes in fagging as well) agree! I don't know whether its merely disappointing or as a pointer to what the world is becoming - very frightening.

Kudos to Jonathon Ross (who I normally have no time for at all) who appears to be the only celebrity who has publicly spoken out that what Clarkson did was totally unacceptable. Every other celebrity seems to be at his beck and call. Maybe I missed something - but did Clarkson become God overnight?

I just feel so sorry for this young producer who will probably be the only one in this matter who WON'T find a future job in the profession he loves.

He's now said that the comments at the auction about the BBC were a joke so he could raise more money.

He has now written in his column for The Sunday Times that his comments were "all meant in jest". He said that his "choice language" was intended to encourage people to bid more for his auction item, which was a lap of the Top Gear test track.

"By being brief, controversial and a bit sweary, I woke the room up and the auction prize I was offering... raised £100,000," he wrote. His column also seemed to suggest that he does not expect to return to work on Top Gear, writing: "I used to work on a television show called Top Gear."

Actually wasn't expecting that!

It'll probably put Clarkson in a better position money-wise with ITV or Sky probably getting him but I very much doubt he'll get a show on the same level as Top Gear again.

Some of the comments on Twitter abut the victim in all this are shockingly awful. It seems that some people think it's perfectly OK for somebody to assault a subordinate. Somehow, I suspect they haven't told their bosses that.
