Zac Brown Band claims its third #1 album this week. 'Jekyll + Hyde' had 228K total units, 214K of which were sales. This is the band's second-best debut to date, after their previous album 'Uncaged' opened with 234K sales in 2012. At #2, Josh Groban's 'Stages' beats the first week of his previous album, which sold 145K in its first week.

Zac Brown Band Earns Third No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart

Zac Brown Band notches its third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart as its latest effort, Jekyll + Hyde, arrives atop the tally. The set, which was released on April 28, moved 228,000 equivalent album units in the week ending May 3, according to Nielsen Music.

 

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

 

Jekyll + Hyde is the group’s first album for John Varvatos Records, Republic Records and Big Machine. The act was previously signed to Atlantic Records. Jekyll + Hyde is also the band’s third straight studio effort to reach No. 1, following the chart-topping bows of Uncaged (in 2012) and You Get What You Give (2010). The new set moved 214,000 in traditional album sales, marking the group’s second-largest sales frame (following the 234,000 sales launch of Uncaged).

 

The new album was led by two No. 1 singles on two different airplay charts: “Heavy Is the Head,” featuring Chris Cornell, is spending its second week atop the Mainstream Rock Songs chart (dated May 16), while “Homegrown” led the Country Airplay chart for three weeks in April. Zac Brown Band is only the second act to ever reach No. 1 on both of those tallies (following Bon Jovi).

 

Coming in at No. 2 behind Zac Brown Band on the new Billboard 200 is singer Josh Groban, who lands his eighth top 10 album with Stages. The set opens with 180,000 units, of which 176,000 were pure album sales. The album performed stronger than expected, as last week, some industry forecasters had pegged the set to start with around 125,000.

 

Stages’ sales debut also surpasses the bow of Groban’s last release, 2012’s All That Echoes, which entered with 145,000 sold (and debuted at No. 1).

 

Stages features Groban interpreting a bevy of famed musical theater songs, including tunes from Les Miserables (“Bring Him Home”), A Chorus Line (“What I Did For Love”) and The Phantom of the Opera (“All I Ask Of You”). The set boasts collaborations with Kelly Clarkson, Chris Botti and six-time Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald.

 

Groban’s pairing with Clarkson on “All I Ask Of You” debuts on the Pop Digital Songs chart at No. 32, selling 15,000 downloads.

 

Trailing Groban on the Billboard 200 at No. 3 is the Furious 7 soundtrack, which drives down one position with 53,000 units (down 15 percent).

 

The third and final new entry in the Billboard 200’s new top 10 is country singer Tyler Farr’s Suffer In Peace. It starts at No. 4 with 42,000 units (of which 36,000 are pure album sales). The album follows Farr’s 2013 full-length debut, Redneck Crazy, which debuted and peaked at No. 5 off a 29,000 sales start.

 

Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late slips one rung to No. 5 with 37,000 (down 24 percent), and the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack is also down a slot, to No. 6, with 36,000 units (down 6 percent).

 

Last week’s No. 1 album, Alabama Shakes’ Sound & Color, slides to No. 7 in its second week with 34,000 units (down 64 percent).

 

Sam Smith’s In the Lonely Hour dips 7-8 with 33,000 (down 9 percent) and Taylor Swift’s 1989 descends 6-9 with 32,000 (down 11 percent). Meghan Trainor’s Title rounds out the top 10, holding steady at No. 10 with 31,000 (up less than 1 percent).

 

 

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: Blur Scores Its Highest Charting Album Ever

On the latest Billboard 200 chart (dated May 16), Zac Brown Band scored its third No. 1 album, as Jekyll + Hyde debuted atop the list. The effort started with 228,000 equivalent album units in the week ending May 3, according to Nielsen Music. It was one of three albums that debuted in the top 10, which also included new arrivals from Josh Groban (Stages) and Tyler Farr (Suffer In Peace).

 

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

 

Let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the chart:

 

—Blur, The Magic Whip - No. 24 — Remarkably, veteran band Blur logs its highest charting album ever with The Magic Whip's arrival at No. 24 (16,000 equivalent album units earned). It's the group's first studio album since 2003, when Think Tank logged their previous highest rank of No. 56.

 

—Eric Clapton, Forever Man - No. 26 — Legendary singer/guitarist Eric Clapton continues his lengthy chart history on the Billboard 200 as his new compilation Forever Man debuts at No. 26. The set moved 8,000 equivalent album units in the week ending May 3, according to Nielsen Music. The new effort is his 44th charting album and comes almost 45 years after he made his solo debut with his self-titled album on the chart dated July 25, 1970.

 

—Grateful Dead, Dave's Picks Volume 14: Academy of Music, New York, NY, 3/26/72 - No. 31 — The debuting set is the 68th charting album for the act, and third this year. Just since 2010, the group has tallied 22 entries, nearly all from its expansive archival reissue series (including this new arrival).

 

—Zac Brown Band, The Foundation - No. 71 — As the group's latest album starts at No. 1, its breakthrough album The Foundation zooms back onto the list with a 137 percent overall unit gain, and a 69 percent sales increase.

 

—The Weepies, Sirens - No. 103 — The folk/pop duo returns with its first studio set in five years, which also enters at No. 3 on Folk Albums (5,000 sold). The act will be on the road in support of the album this summer, with tour dates announced through July 1.

 

—Sabrina Carpenter, Eyes Wide Open - No. 124 — The singer's performance of the album's title track and "We'll Be the Stars" on the Radio Disney Music Awards (April 29, broadcast on Disney Channel) helps spur a 31 percent overall unit gain for the set.

How much has it sold, does anyone know?

It has about 253k in "sales" but I believe it's quite inflated by streaming etc. Around 115k in actual copies sold is my best guess!

 

It makes me happy that Ultraviolence re-enters somewhat often. It has such a horrendously short run in comparison to Born To Die and I really have hope it'll hit 52 weeks before it dies completely. I have faith.
