I look forward to the return of the farthing!

Speaking to a colleague who won a "guess the baby's weight" for a newborn. Not in kilos. Never has been. Height same. Roadsigns in miles. In what universe did we ever go completely Metric except for doing sums in which case it's WAY easier to do surveying in metric. I know cos I work in meters and hectares, not bloody acres and yards which are hopelessly confusing. And I'm 64. Who on Earth of working age wants to go back to a terrible system!

I guess Bozo is a huge fan of the occasion when NASA completely missed Mars with one it's Landers because they got confused about Imperial, and Metric being a thing in Europe.

What could possibly go wrong, eh?

I can't think of something they've done more pointless than this, like I don't get it, WHO is asking for this? It will just confuse the vast majority of people and screw up the retail sector, I know it's meant as a populist anti-Brexit move and another distraction, but surely even the most ardent leavers wouldn't care?

I said years ago that the Tories would want to make rejoining the EU as difficult as possible. This can only be seen as part of that. If we make imperial units the main form of measurement, that's another thing that will have to be reversed before we can rejoin.

Anything that is exported to the EU will still have to show metric measurements. If this is the best "B****t Opportunity" they've got, it just shows what a stupid idea it was in the first place.

I tend to use kilos for weight and height in m. Prefer to use km for distances too - many road races and walks are in km. Just so much more logical.

Luckily this has gone down with public with complete rolleyes apart from a few GBNews fanatic/troll types. Retailers and Business leaders are aghast at during this horrific cost of living crisis the Tories come out with this crap.

That and Partygate deflection. Or maybe he hopes to remembered as The Imperial Prime Minister cos it sounds better than what he will be remembered as.

Pain in the arse coming across the border and Belfast being 80km in Dundalk and 62 miles in Newry, not confusing at all!

Is it just me or does Tory logic seem insane...?

I paraphrase:

"we want to stop the evil people smugglers so we are getting the boot in on their victims to tackle it"

"We are pulling the stops out to prevent the execution of the British captured soldiers fighting for Ukraine, and that means we refuse to talk to Russia in order to do this and talk to anybody else about it instead"

Oh, sorry, I forgot, it's Liz Truss. Logic isn't an issue when it comes to stupid. Too dumb to even make a convincing lie up. It's a little like tackling the problem of too many newborn kittens by moaning to dog-owners about it, and bringing in a law that forces drowning of newborn kittens to stop owners who don't get their cats sorted to avoid unwanted pregancy.

You're right - they don't even have to try and sound coonvincing. Well not to intelligent reasonable people, only to their horrific ERG sect and about 35% of people who still vote for this evil party.

But it looks like the European Court of Human Rights (which is nothing to do with the EU as it includes non EU countries and set up by the UK post war with input from the likes of Winston Churchill) may have stopped all the dportatoins, or at least delayed them, due to successful appeals. Of course Johnson is saying let's withdraw from the ECHR. I can just imagine the ferocity of our Media like the Mail and Express tomorrow - who will do thier best to conflate the EU with the ECHR I bet.

We really have become a nasty spiteful country and one with next to no friends.

I dont think they need to even try to conflate anything to do with Europe. A certain proportion of the population lost all ability to see things to do with Europe rationally years ago, stoked up by rich billionaires and millionaires wanting to have complete control over people gullible enough to believe them.

About a third of the population, like every country, generally doesn't care much about others, or at least not enough to get off their arses and vote for someone who will attempt to do the right thing. Mainly they care about their own wallet and own well-being.

Happily, the EU have started legal proceedings again. So we'll see how popular Bozo & co are in a few years when nobody trusts any agreement with the UK will be honoured so cant be arsed to sign up to anything that doesn't involve selling us crap no-one else will buy, or stuff at inflated prices.

Down to the British voting public to do something about it, and if they don't they deserve everything that's coming (ie runaway inflation, reduced wages, declining industry and social services that are in even more crisis than they are already.

"But the foreigners....!"

It's like that no-confidence vote was the last straw and Johnson's gone full-on Trump-style fascist while he still can, it's quite shocking, they're genuinely gonna take us right back to the dark ages where we barely resemble a democracy if something doesn't change soon. I wish I were being hyperbolic there, but...
On the plus side aaron banks has lost his vindictive campaign agsinst carole cadwallader and the verdict means we can report that he had AT LEAST 5 meetings with Russian goverment officials leading up to Brexit. He has already been found lying about links to Anal lickita in the campaign. The Tories refuse point blank to engage in anything to do with illegal funding by Russian oligarchs because any public awareness of what went on in terms of messing in foreign politics from Russia would undermine Johnson completely and prove British voters were taken for fools by Putin.

Huh this story about Carrie Johnson appears to have been removed from the Times and replaced with some story about Priti Patel calling the ECHR racists

I don't normally invoke Orwell as too many people misunderstand that book but there's a tweet down the thread there that makes that point well, what else would you call this if not memory-holing?

So, either The Times has been threatened with legal action, someone in the print room was having a laugh, or someone called in some favours owed.

Priti Patel: European court called racist because it thinks Afghans who misguidedly believed the British were on their side and wanted to come to a nation and culture they foolishly trusted being sent to a culture they have no links with in one of the poorest unstable nations on the planet is actually racist. It is also a result of chucking out EU policies: previously they would have been sent back to France and the money spent on policing trafficking crooks and housing claimants in France until the cases were looked at.

So, entirely created by whipping up racism and anti-EU feeling then. Some things never change in Torytonia.

PS This has been tweeted:

Dominic Cummings

The 'missing story' (pulled by Times after no10 call Fri night) is true. Walters repeatedly published accurate stories, e.g on illegal donations. Times pathetic to have folded & shd reverse ferret. Truth is worse! 🛒 wanted to appoint girlfriend to gvt job in Q3 2020 too.

So either Dom is going to be sued as a liar now, or he has evidence and testimony to support his statement and nothing is spoken of his tweet again. We can only wait with baited breath to see which it is.

Mm yes, Cummings going on record about this story makes it more interesting. I'd almost think someone at the Times was deliberately playing to the Streisand effect if the replaced story wasn't the worst kind of horrific rhetoric that the Johnson government loves to see in its papers.
The by election outcomes will be interesting. Really hope the Tories will lose both seats. If labour can’t win one of the seats in the face of such adverse times right now then how are they going to be able to win a general election?

Rumours that there are two super injunctions about - one for this story when he was Foreign Sec and one for another. Story is obviously true, just looks like they intervened before it got published.

They only seat Labour can win is Wakefield. The polls seem to suggest they will win it, but who knows. For me most things will come down to the cost of living crisis that is happening and ultimately people will angle for political change.

Yeh the other one is in Devon so that’s a Lib Dem target despite the 2019 result when Labour did ok!

It's in Labour's interest for the Lib Dems to do well here imo. It's a safe Tory seat in theory, if the Lib Dems can chip away at the South/South west, usually when the Lib Dems do well, Labour does well in a general election. I think the reality is in order the Labour to govern, they are going to need the Lib Dems and/or the SNP.

I would imagine a minority Labour gov could depend on Libdem support - but not in gov again as partners, they wont take that risk again this side of hell freezing over. The SNP will have one condition only and no prizes for guessing it. Given it would be electoral suicide to lose Scotland.....who knows. Would Labour want to risk being out of power on a "semi-permament" basis? I would imagine not, they'd just rely on support on a case by case basis. Pretty sure the SNP wouldnt be keen on Tories getting back in power if they were going to get the political blame for it....
