October 2, 20159 yr Author Italy have decided to take it serious again for the Eurovision Song Contest 2016. RAI have decided that the traditional Sanremo Festival will once again be used as a selection method for Eurovision. The winner of Sanremo 2016 will be asked to represent Italy in Stockholm. Obviously, there is a possibility for the winner to decline the opportunity. Looking back at last year, all artists but Lara Fabian said they’d take the opportunity of Eurovision. If the trend continues, we can expect the winner of Sanremo in Stockholm. Italy, as a member of the Big Five, will be pre-qualified for the final. RAI have now also confirmed that the final will be broadcast on RAI Uno. RAI have used Sanremo ever since returning to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011. That year, Raphael Gualazzi was selected for Düsseldorf after winning the Giovanni category (for young, new artists). In 2012, Nina Zilli was internally selected and in 2013 (Marco Mengoni) and 2015 (Il Volo) the winner of Sanremo went to Eurovision. The only exception was 2014, when Emma Marrone was internally selected without the involvement of Sanremo. When RAI confirmed participation in Sweden a few weeks ago, they accompanied it with the hashtag ”#rematch”: Is it Italy’s way of saying they’re well and truly ready to bring the contest to Rome (or Milan, Turin, you name it)? Il Volo represented Italy in the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest, where they finished in third after winning the televote. #rematch indeed Sweden :D I'd quite like another turn of popera from Italy, they're good at it. Il Volo were ROBBED.
October 2, 20159 yr It's great to see how they are showing Eurovision on their equivalent of BBC One this year, fantastic how they've rebuilt Eurovision interest in the country in the space of just 5 years or so! I'm glad Il Volo were done over by the juries as I much prefer Heroes and A Million Voices, but there's no denying that it was a fantastic performance if not quite my cup of tea. I'd love something along the lines of Nina again!
December 26, 20159 yr I know nothing about any of them, but these are the 20 songs participating in Sanremo. December 26, 20159 yr I recognise Annalisa from that list, but no others - not that I'm familiar with San Remo in past years aside from the winners.
December 26, 20159 yr I'm familiar with one of Dolcenera's songs from (I think) 2013 which was rather good. ?v=P2UmvFozwLY It does seem as if Italy are primed for a victory any year now so will be interested to hear what this comes up with (but only after I know whose won, the 10 hours or so of programming are not and never will be the one).
February 10, 20169 yr Interesting wiwibloggs article here about the #SanremoArcobaleno hashtag (Sanremo Rainbow) and how Sanremo's being used as a way of supporting LGBT rights in Italy (through a selection of the artists wearing/holding rainbow coloured ribbons on their mic stands during their performances) the same week that the senate is voting on civil partnerships and adoption reform.
February 11, 20169 yr ooh go on Italy! They are like one of the few liberal European countries that still have a tough time accepting LGBTQ people.
February 13, 20169 yr TONIGHT'S NATIONAL FINAL... http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z369/RC741/Eurovision%20Logos/Italy_zps35e0e269.png ITALY Festival di Sanremo 13th February 2016 Begins at 7.35pm in the UK, 8.15pm in Italy and Central Europe The show is scheduled to last 4 hours 25 minutes Watch the selection at Eurovision.tv or via the official RAI webcast Running Order Click ♫ to listen to the studio versions of each song! The voting will consist of two rounds and both rounds will be determined by 40% televoting, 30% expert jury voting and 30% demoscopic poll voting which is a sample of 300 music fans that will vote from home. The top three entries from the first round of voting will advance to the superfinal where the winner will then be chosen. It is important to remember that the winner receives the right to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest, but do not have to take up the offer if they don't wish to. Furthermore, it is not mandatory that the song the artist performs in Sanremo goes on to become their Eurovision entry, it just so turned out that last year's winning artist and song did both become the Eurovision entry. Based on last year, more details of the Eurovision entry should arise in the press conference that follows the conclusion of Sanremo tonight. Potential Winners? At the time of writing, Giovanni Caccamo & Deborah Iurato are favourites to win among bookmakers on odds around the 2/1 mark. Annalisa is second favourite averaging odds around 4/1 and third favourite is Lorenzo Fragola averaging around 5/1. Elio e le Storie Tese, Noemi, Francesca Michielin and Arisa are all close behind averaging around the 7/1 or 8/1 mark and it is expected that the winner will be amongst these seven artists. Further details available at Eurovision.tv
February 13, 20169 yr I've only heard three of these songs so far, my favourite being Alessio whose song is very reminiscent of Ariana Grande's 'One Last Time' but is probably too modern for Italy hence it was in the "at risk" zone in the first night of voting! Annalisa's song is very good however not the certain winner I was hoping she could provide after her success last year and the odds have reflected that and swung towards the duo. The song by the duo that are favourites to win is a typical ballad, well sung and well produced although not too much more to say on it.
February 13, 20169 yr I've edited in the running order above, looks set up to be a victory for the duo to me!
February 13, 20169 yr The three superfinalists are Giovanni Caccamo & Deborah Iurato, Francesca Michielin and Stadio. From the recap both the duo and Francesca sounded decent, Stadio certainly didn't.
February 14, 20169 yr Stadio have rejected the offer to go to Eurovision thankfully, so now RAI can choose any of the other artists that they wish to. I think it'd be nice for them to go with Francesca who came second, although lots of people feel like they may like to go with Annalisa.
February 14, 20169 yr I agree. Relieved that Stadio turned it down. Disappointed that Dolcenera ranked very low though. Can RAI choose artists only from this year's Sanremo or artists outside the competition? If amongst Sanremo, Giovanni/Deborah, Annalisa, Dolcenera, Francesca or Alessio would be a good fit. Otherwise, Tiziano Ferro would be a nice entry. Some people are suggesting The Kolors, last year's Amici winner.
February 14, 20169 yr People seems to be suggesting it has to be someone else from this year's festival, in essence reverting back to what they did for the first couple of years and having a special panel selecting an entry from the Sanremo participants that isn't necessarily the winner. Not 100% sure though!
February 14, 20169 yr Stadio's song gets better towards the end but yeah, that'd have been tragic at Eurovision. WE DIDN'T WANT YOU BEFORE YOU DIDN'T WANT US, OLD BASTARDS.
February 14, 20169 yr Well it looks like RAI are letting Stadio backtrack on their pre-victory decision as Stadio are now saying they are still thinking about it. The Eurovision representative should've been announced in the press conference happening now, but it looks like we will have to wait for Stadio to decide. :(
