November 14, 20159 yr Great performance, she's so much better at slower songs and obv it helps that she had *some* assistance. Still not 100% sold on the song though.
November 14, 20159 yr Love this. Brilliant performance on CIN aswell I love how its another song of talking lyrics aswell as Ellie does them so well
November 14, 20159 yr Little or no sales boost from that performance and Delirium looks set to drop 10 or more places this week. I get the feeling her star is fading a bit in the UK after peaking with Love Me Like You Do. She needs a strong single to recover, I don t think Army is that single.
November 14, 20159 yr Her star isn't fading, Love Me Like You Do was just an anomaly on her career. Yes she had a #1 before with Burn, but LMLYD was inescapable, huge and far, far bigger than Ellie. A song like that takes on a life of its own, as it has done. Anyway my point is basically that right now is pretty much where she has always been, Halcyon took a long time to peak and sold very well for a long time and few of the singles smashed until the re-release. Basically I think she's doing fine right now, unless the album fails to recover and future singles fail to make any impact, which I highly doubt given her past performance.
November 14, 20159 yr i think the issue there is that the entire gestation for this record has been flawed. for whatever reason has decided to attempt to emulate '1989' but in the process has come out with a bloated and dull record with a hideous choice of lead single. to my mind ellie is very much the lib dem's kind of pop star

It really couldn't be more packed with melody or immaculately produced. It's a better album than 1989.
November 14, 20159 yr Do you seriously listen to Delirium and think "this is dull"? It really couldn't be more packed with melody or immaculately produced. It's a better album than 1989. it's a bloated record whose gestation has been based around emulating taylor swift's BOLD statement of making an out and out pop record. i mean she's even teamed up with the same producers as taylor. with 'on my mind' as lead single is a lazy frankee 'f u right back' reinterpretation for 2015. did she record this album on the back of 'love me like you do's success? i'm guessing so because there is no focus there, the production voids the tone of her voice and you end up in 22 track pop quagmire. in a nutshell i just don't see any discernible pop star coming through. i think it says everything when 'army' the most insincere and patronising of songs is the next go to on this album. it's like a jessie j self-indulgence but without the personal context. i think the hailee ep is the perfect example of what pop should be in 2015
November 14, 20159 yr I really enjoyed her 'Army' performance, it was very powerful, I felt fitted Children in Need and she looked a lot more comfortable performing it than she did 'On my Mind' on X Factor and Graham Norton. However, the iTunes performance of the song, since Children in Need got 8 million viewers, is slightly concerning. The song didn't even manage to go top 130 and the album has barely moved, even a choir performance of Miley's 'The Climb' gave that song a much bigger boost. So, admittedly, there are signs that something isn't quite connecting the way it has in the past (in the UK, at least), but I'm sure she'll still manage to peak over the course of the year, as I'm sure the album campaign will be a long one, they just need to be careful with what singles they push for her. Given where she is now you would expect big sales, consistently high chart positions and staying power and big responses to performances. It hasnt happened recently (in the UK).

It hasnt happened recently (in the UK). it's self-sabotage when you write a kiss off to ed bloody sheeran and let it lead your campaign even though every aspect from the video to live performances are awkward. it actually reminds me of Lily's 'sheezus' record: eagerly anticipated returns with the bulk produced by Greg kurstin and proving impossible to promote effectively. it's such a pity because Ellie could be something so fabulous if she went with her heart for once instead of polydor's agenda...
November 14, 20159 yr Ellie could be something so fabulous if she went with her heart for once instead of polydor's agenda... I think this sums up Ellie since 2012 to be honest.
November 14, 20159 yr I think this sums up Ellie since 2012 to be honest. sadly it's what that label is allegadly notorious for, wtf is artistic expression or integrity!

I get the feeling her star is fading a bit in the UK after peaking with Love Me Like You Do. She needs a strong single to recover, I don t think Army is that single. I doubt it's going to fall more than 10 places this week. I'm thinking low top 10 (#9-10) which would be a great result considering the number of new releases this week. Amazing performance of 'Army'! A little disappointed about the minimal boost but a pick up in AirPlay will do wonders for her no doubt.
November 14, 20159 yr Apologies but I fail to see anyway in which people can regard this album to be better than 'Halcyon' or even 'Lights' let alone the greatest album of all time / better than Britney's 'Blackout' Each to their own, I realise that, but when I listened to it (albeit begrudingly after hating 'On My Mind' - but being a huge fan of Ellie during 'Halcyon') I was bored shitless throughout. The songs do for the most part have nice melodies but there is no character in the album at all. It is the definition of throwing everything out there and hoping something sticks. The only moments that do stick are 'Code' and maybe a handful others. It mostly just there and nothing stuck with me post my listening session. Maybe I am being too harsh but when I see the complete opposite and it being hailed as the greatest thing ever, I guess the criticism it is getting from a lot of places balances that out. I fail to see how I can ever warrant listening to all 22 tracks again when I have the glorious, heart-felt, daring 'Halcyon' in my iTunes instead.

And the idea that these songs are a radical departure from what she's done before is kind of ridiculous - it's still very much an Ellie album (Holding On For Life could have come from Halcyon for instance), just dressed up in glossier production and more uptempo. Her DNA is all over it. I can't imagine most of these songs sung by anybody else. Sheezus was a bloody awful album bordering on career suicide. This will have long legs.
November 14, 20159 yr I haven't listened to the album yet, so I can't comment on it relative to Halcyon, but it very definitely is a different sound from the handful of tracks I've heard. Whereas before she was making broadly similar music lyrically, production wise it was much more interesting, exciting and individual. Nothing I've heard so far off this can make that claim. In terms of her 'star power', I'm not especially sure it's really changed all that much. Yes, she's had some bigger hits than she did before Halcyon but Ellie Goulding the personality is still a far cry from the ubiquity and general awareness of a Taylor Swift (who is realistically her most relevant comparison). She's more of a female Jason Derulo to me (BE QUIET). Someone who has chart positions and sometimes sales way beyond their actual level of stardom. For example LMLYD was a gargantuan smash, but that kind of song would be a smash for anyone, so how much of that is down to Ellie and how much is down to the song? Same goes for Burn and all her big hits really. They are largely good songs, but not a song you hear and instantly think ''Oh that HAS TO BE the new Ellie G, it has her stamp all over it''. That's where her problem is.
November 17, 20159 yr Late to this discussion but I find it really interesting as I agree with points from both sides. Bearing in mind I've only listened properly to the standard version once, I do think it's bloated, largely unfocused and at times lacking in character, but I still think there's the makings of an excellent album in there which experiments, takes some risks, uses the magic in her voice to its best, and is a worthy follow-up to 'Halcyon'. As Jark said, 'Holding On For Life' among others ('Devotion' also comes to mind in particular) are in the vein of Ellie at her most inspired and could really be by no one else. The problem for me is down to a lack of quality control/a marked reluctance to alienate casual fans that she's recently picked up, which is a real shame. I feel the new era would be best presented as either a normal length album which reshuffles the track order and cuts the pandering moments that don't work (I'm undecided if the singles should stay in this case, though they're far from awful) or as two mini-albums/EPs which are catered to different audiences. Basically, the execution of the presentation is flawed and messy, but the goods are there so ultimately I'm happy. B-) I haven't listened to the album yet, so I can't comment on it relative to Halcyon, but it very definitely is a different sound from the handful of tracks I've heard. I thought exactly this before I heard the album so I'd be very interested to see if your mind is changed after listening. ^_^ ~ And so as to be strictly on topic, 'Army' is nice enough and her CIN performance of it was a big improvement to those for 'On My Mind'.
