Being in a TV ad is cheating rather though. Not that I care - I think OAOS is ridiculous and should be scrapped for all except big artists.

Who do you define as a big artist?

I don't think it's ridiculous to assume people want to download or listen to songs after their premiere. I much prefer it to waiting weeks to be able to listen songs I like. And don't even get me started on global releases that exclude the UK. It's about working out a strategy around it which the record companies haven't quite grasped yet. But at least they're experimenting.

It's not "cheating". It's called utilising the OA/OS strategy successfully.

This is probably a bit of a fluke really. The song should have been out by the time the ad launched as they've had to push it back to avoid Adele. However, I think it's actually worked out well for Fleur and may be a lesson for how to do this. It's been teased really well. Hopefully they'll release the video in time for the actual release.

MNEK & Zara have proved that with a great song and radio getting on board at the right time that an OA/OS release can work for even mostly unknown artists so I don't buy this "OA/OS can only work for big artists" excuse, labels just need to get their strategies spot on!

Anyone who can smash it first week out with an OAOS release like Bieber and 1D.

It's not "cheating". It's called utilising the OA/OS strategy successfully.

But it's getting aired (OK, not in full) and yet people can't buy it yet. Cheating's the wrong word. I don't see any problem with holding back singles a little bit to build up some popularity before they are released. But isn't it more annoying being teased with snippets of a song for weeks than them releasing the whole thing on YouTube? I think they should just have a shorter gap between the premiere and the release for most artists, and only hold back longer if they're not getting any immediate support.

And I still think they will ditch it because it's just too much hard work for so little reward. They are probably losing more sales by potential hits not taking off at all because they're dead on arrival, than they were from holding singles back too long.

Who's fault is that though?

And how do you stop artists changing release date constantly to get the no1 spot like last summer!?

It's just a grat track.

I know, it was more of a tongue in cheek comment really!

I actually think that's exactly the right strategy - rather than complete OA/OS, a much shorter gap between the premier and the release, say around a week, rather than the 4-5 weeks that it was previously. That way, airplay is just starting to build up as the song is released, and you won't get the ridiculous second week drop in chart position before a song (potentially) rebounds.

I think the right strategy is OA/OS for big name acts (Bieber, 1D, Drake, Ellie Goulding, Rihanna, Adele, Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris etc) and a month wait between radio premiere and download for people with less demand. The main reason we were all complaining with held back releases is that the releases were sometimes delayed for about 3 months (and that's no good either, see NLR's Around The World flop of a chart run past its #14 peak).

Look at WSTRN 'In2', now that has a great release strategy for a held back song and it's set to be big.

OA/OS is the norm in literally every other country in the world and seems to work just fine. I don't see why the UK needs to be any different. Held back releases may attain higher chart peaks, but it's nothing more than chart manipulation to make hits appear bigger than they actually are (just my opinion).

I understand both arguments but I really hope record companies don't abandon OA/OS again personally. Now that nearly everyone seems to have adopted it (in a much bigger way than the first try in early 2011), I really think the public will start to notice if it's abandoned again.

It's so good to be able to buy brand new songs in HQ on a Friday, rather than having to make do with a radio rip or unofficial Youtube video for weeks by which time you're bored of the song and don't bother paying to download it.

The industry has moved on a LOT in the last four years, if something is available to stream then it should be available to buy too. And GOD knows they don't want to start delaying streaming releases as well if it's on Youtube. I've also always found it grossly unfair that the UK (and Germany?) are the only countries made to wait just because our artists, record companies and media are obsessed with chart debut positions in a way that nobody else in the world is.

For me the ONLY problem with OA/OS is radio adoption. Certainly something like Blonde's Feel Good probably would have sold much more if it had been OA/OS because Radio 1 *probably* would have got on board and it would have lasted in the chart for a few weeks and accrued more sales.

But radio really cannot be controlled, OA/OS or not, I just pray that they start to get their head more around OA/OS and support more unknown/new artists releasing that way to make it a level playing field.

If new artists were getting the same level of airplay as the likes of 1D/Bieber then nobody could surely complain if the songs were still failing to go top 40. As it is, airplay is lacking, songs aren't being heard, nobody's buying them and it's just helping the bigger artists get bigger and the smaller artists get smaller, which will be really detrimental to the music industry in the long run.

Going back to holding songs back and artificially providing new artists with a 10-28-44 chart run isn't going to help anyone in the long run. OA/OS absolutely CAN work for everyone (as MNEK/Zara have indeed shown), but radio need to get their heads screwed on before it can happen.

Basically everything you've said here I agree totally with. Those who want songs held back until radio gets on board are people with an agenda and want their fav artist to peak high in the charts.

Radio as you say has helped a bit this time with early releases with even capital playlistung songs before Friday releases but there are others who will get forgotten or lost and others that are playlisted a little late.

So happy to see Lee's favourite Jess Glynne at number 11 with Take Me Home.
