September 27, 20177 yr Author the 2009 one and 'Into Darkness' :PÂ I'm too tired to ban you, but just KNOW that with every stroke of my keyboard I am WISHING YOU WERE DEAD
September 27, 20177 yr I haven't really followed the new Star Trek, but I am aware that there's a character in it called Brett Anderson.
October 5, 20177 yr I'm really enjoying it so far! I think the only thing I don't like is the font selection for subtitles, haha! It's still weird to me how they decided to air it in three or four different ways depending on where in the world you're watching. In Canada we've got it on a proper TV channel (Space) each week.
October 6, 20177 yr I haven't really followed it, as I don't have Netflix, judging by a few comments it seems to be getting a bashing all round. I just wait for the DVD to come out after Xmas.
October 9, 20177 yr I'm not going to write the show off after only 4 hours (the 1st season of most Trek shows was poor) but I don't think I like wear this is heading. It's all a bit generic and lacks the depth or intelligence of previous shows. It doesn't feel enough like Star Trek and shows like The Expanse are doing this idea so much better
December 29, 20177 yr Been watching this and though I'm only up to episode 3 I'm really enjoying it. It seems a little bit more THINKING than the Nu-Trek films (admittedly not hard but...) which is very welcome, more like if Enterprise was actually the gritty show it tried to be and I think that's a solid direction for Trek in the new era. Maybe it'll go to pot in the upcoming episodes but I'm enjoying the sense of mystery around the Discovery and the fact that the main character is willing to bend the rules if it's the right thing, what with Starfleet being as rigid as ever. The Klingons have been bothering me a bit but I'm just rationalising that they were supposed to be augment virused at this point in Trek canon and presumably that's just resulted in HAIR LOSS AND ORCIFICATION rather than making forehead-ridged samurai into definitelynotmongoloidhumans. And it'll stay like that until the new Klingons inevitably show up beyond when they were supposed to be cured.
February 13, 20187 yr Now that the series has finished I can honestly say it's been a worthy addition to the franchise, has only made one truly glaring cock up (Klingon re-design) and has plenty of potential to build and grow from here. Plus that final scene was truly a great moment.
February 14, 20187 yr Author Overall I'm still not sold. It got a lot better after the mid-season and the stuff in the mirror universe was all very good, but even taking aside the fact it just made up an entirely new set of rules for pretty much EVERYTHING, it just didn't do a very good job at world building or character development. Most of the main cast did things for reasons, but what those reasons were didn't seem to be born out of character but rather story necessity. I still don't really know ANYTHING about anyone who isn't named Burnham, Tilly or Saru.  The Klingon reboot was ludicrous visually, but they tried to portray them as savage and a warrior race but most of the time they moved like sedated dinosaurs and stood around talking even more than the Federation. Qo'noS was as bland as anything from any other iteration of Trek despite the SLEAZE (in capital letters lest we miss out the Star Trek is edgy now) and they robbed them almost entirely of any culture. I hate the Klingon's, I skip almost every Klingon-centric episode of any of the other iterations, but they served no more purpose in this than to act as an enemy. The annoying thing is it was so close so many times. They just need to slow down a little and build character more, make the decisions they took make sense and also be born out of who they are as people as well as necessity. It was both great and incredibly annoying to see Burnham having that great speech at the end. If they'd been capable of that all long then WHY THE HELL NOT DO IT. I know pretty much every Trek show has had an awful first season and I think this has fantastic potential, but none of the others have been able to work on an entirely empty sandbox since TNG. Overall I'd give it a 6 out of 10, with potential, but it has a lot of work to do and I'm not sure the creative forces really know HOW to make it work, long term.
