December 6, 20159 yr Author King of my castle was huge at the time! Mr Blobby was a typical novelty Xmas no1. Was it released on Xmas week? No- a month before, it's run for the purposes of this thread was 3-1-2-1
December 6, 20159 yr Ah the Christmas battle of 1993, we know the outcome but almost everyone thought that Take That had it in the bag when they entered at No 1 the week before Christmas. Yet sometimes the chart surprise us and the following week saw Mr Blobby overturn the disadvantage and make that Christmas a Blobby one. Bit of a fail for Take That, had they waited another week they would have easily claimed the Christmas #1. The 1993 christmas chart like 2010 was announced on the 19th - the furthest possible for the big day itself and hence the sales period actually covered 13-18th December (no trade on a Sunday back in 1993) and was arguably unrepresentative of the true Christmas sales week of 20th-24th..
December 6, 20159 yr Author A fair point- which makes it all the more bizarre why Take That didn't hold back a week!
December 6, 20159 yr Mr Blobby also became the first 'artist' since 1969 to return to the top. ICONIC!
December 6, 20159 yr Author 52. CANNONBALL- Little Mix (2011) 326,000 http://i63.tinypic.com/riclyo.jpg Released three times by Damien Rice it had only made No 19 (2004) though it became a radio favourite over the years, “Cannonball” was then covered during the X Factor selection process and the exposure lead it to finally make the top 10 (No 9) in October 2011. When Little Mix picked the track as their winning song it naturally wasted no time in rushing to the top slot selling more in 7 days than the original had done in 9 years. 4yO2vomHbB4

Steeped in just the right amount of controversy this Nile Rodgers produced hit became Madonna’s first top 5 single and her first US chart topper. Incredibly the whole top 5 from the Christmas 1984 charts makes it here a symbol of the strength of the market at the time. TRZG-YiLHmk

December 7, 20159 yr No surprise that the top 5 from 1984 made it - one of the most iconic Christmas charts in history along with 73, 03, 09 & 85! And yet 1997 will be the year to beat them all - my predix. Edited December 7, 20159 yr by Cauldron

December 7, 20159 yr Yeh well cd sales were at their height - I was talking about for Xmas chart classics lol. Oh, I know. 1997 was not classic but it's still phenomenal that the whole Top 5 was selling enough to be number 1. 6 million sellers came out of that period and that doesn't even include Candle in the Wind which was hovering around number 10. December 8, 20159 yr 50. Gotta Get Thru This - Daniel Bedingfield (2001) 328,000 So I'll be finishing off this countdown, and I've clearly started as I mean to go on, being a whole day late with my first section! http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/uploads/group_images/of_18_icon.gif Don't worry, you'll be getting four songs tonight to make up for it *.* First up is Daniel Bedingfield at #50, with one of his best known hits. Gotta Get Thru This was Daniel's debut single, and soared to the top spot in the UK, ending up 16th in the Y/E list. Also, I imagine my commentary will be less good than Gezza's. He brings the brains, I bring the beauty, we make a fab team x 9IVteXdg4HA
December 8, 20159 yr 49. Love Of The Common People - Paul Young (1982) 328,000 I'll be honest, I've not even heard of this song  but Paul Young released his own interpretation of Love of the Common People in 1982, and it peaked at #2 here in the UK. Stiff Little Fingers recorded a cover of the song also, and lead singer Jake Burns recalled in an interview that Young had asked them if they were releasing the song as a single, and once they said they were not, he asked if he could instead, thinking it would flop. And here it is, at #49 in the biggest selling December hits of the past 35 years. G'won. SVmjKHkgxis
December 8, 20159 yr 48. Leave Right Now - Will Young (2003) 335,000 From one Young to another! And this is a song that I most definitely am familiar with :heehee: Leave Right Now was constantly on the music channels upon release in 2003 and well into 2004, being quite unavoidable, so it's no surprise that it has quite impressive sales, particularly for a dry sales period, as well as a UK chart peak of #1. I personally quite like the song actually, definitely my top Will Young song. dt79h2tsb4g
December 8, 20159 yr 47. Begin The Beguine - Julio Iglesias (1981) 336,000 http://a1.mzstatic.com/eu/r30/Music/v4/2e/1f/d5/2e1fd5b9-1518-2009-d49c-2a09f48fbec6/cover170x170.jpeg Another UK #1 now, this time from Spanish singer/songwriter Julio Iglesias. Begin The Beguine is a cover of a song written by Cole Porter, and introduced during the musical Jubilee in 1935. Many other artists have covered the song over the years, including Tom Jones, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. Iglesias' version topped the UK chart for a week and spent 14 weeks top 75. YtSscfzxKcI
December 8, 20159 yr My bad- I've replaced it with the proper version! http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?s...t&p=5247303 Radio 2 played the version with Gary Glitter on Pick Of The Pops last year. Tony got around it by saying that it was Jive Bunny and not Gary Glitter. I think the reason that he was edited out was the combined scandal and the license expiring. Jive Bunny's other two number ones from 1989 are also completely different on Spotify to the version featured on the single and played on the radio. They are now very poor edits.
December 8, 20159 yr Author Also, I imagine my commentary will be less good than Gezza's. He brings the brains, I bring the beauty, we make a fab team x I'm not sure how I feel about this
