That Paul Young song is one I only ever see or hear in December - it has a mildly Xmassy video - should we start that debate again tho lol.

46. The Power Of Love - Frankie Goes To Hollywood (1984) 343,000

Next up in the countdown we head to 1984, with Frankie Goes To Hollywood's chart topper The Power of Love. The song was a top 10 hit upon two re-issues/remixes also, in 1993 and 2000. Recently, the song was covered by Gabrielle Aplin, who also took the song to #1 following its use in the 2012 John Lewis Christmas advert.

45. Knockin On Heaven's Door - Dunblane (1996) 355,000

A cover of a song originally by Bob Dylan, this song had some tweaks from the original in the lyrics, and was released as a charity single following the Dunblane school massacre. It went to #1, outpeaking the original and two previous covers from Eric Clapton and Guns N' Roses in the process.

44. Baby Can I Hold You / Shooting Star - Boyzone (1997) 359,000

The covers just keep on coming now, with Boyzone's cover of the Tracy Chapman song Baby Can I Hold You landing itself at #44 here. The original did not chart in the UK but Boyzone's version, paired with the non-album single Shooting Star, reached #2 and ultimately ended up as the 26th biggest selling song of the year.

43. The Official Children In Need Medley - Peter Kay's All Star Band (2009) 360,000

220px-PeterKayMedley2009.jpg

Now time for the official Children In Need single of 2009. Peter Kay's All Star Band was a long time in the works, taking around 2 years in total to not just mix the songs, but also create the video, which featured many well-known cartoon characters including Bob the Builder and Postman Pat. In all honesty, I can't remember the song one bit, but the video sticks out in my mind quite clearly!

Annoyingly, this seems to be the only version of the video on YouTube :drama:

Frankie goes to Hollywood is growing into one of my favourite Xmas songs - so powerful and emotional. Gab Aplins version is very good too but the male vocals are amazing for me!

Have you noticed that practically everything Peter Kay has ever done is prefixed with "Peter Kay's"? Does he insist on that? Surprised you're allowed to own the nation's collective nostalgia as that's practically all his act his.

Hands up who remembers...the Flumps?

<HUGE LAUGH>

THE FLUMPS! (Pulls incredulous face) THE FLUMPS! What was that about, eh?

I bought the DVD single of that Peter Kay song, it's genius - not fussed on the song itself though.

I think the dvd helped it remain in the chart throughout the xmas period as mums brought it, its downloads were poor then in january it fell pretty quickly from the top 40!

42. Only You - Flying Pickets (1983) 362,000

Yet another cover! The Flying Pickets covered the Yazoo song Only You in 1984, and the big difference was that it was a capella. When this song went one better than the original and hit the top spot in the UK, it became the first EVER (:jameela:) a capella chart topper (although apparently there are synthesisers throughout so maybe not).

41. Do They Know It's Christmas? Band Aid II (1989) 365,000

220px-Do_They_Know_It's_Christmas_single_cover_-_1989.jpg

I think this a song we're all VERY familiar with by now. Do They Know It's Christmas? was originally released in 1984 as a charity release to raise money during the 1983-85 famine in Ethiopia. Band Aid II was a re-recording just 5 years later. Once again overseen by Bob Geldof, the song was arranged by Stock Aitken Waterman and featured Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Cliff Richard and Wet Wet Wet among others.

Flying Pickets version is so good!

Band Aid 2 was horrible, while the original sounded instantly like a classic from its first haunting chord to sounding not of its time over 30 years later this one sounds so of its time and is absolutely atrocious hearing it now.

40. Saving All My Love For You - Whitney Houston (1985) 366,000

220px-Whitney_Houston_-_Saving_All_My_Love_for_You.jpg

What's this then? Oh yes, a cover :kink: Whitney Houston covered this minor 1978 hit by Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. for her debut album. It was released as the second single from the album in 1985. It was a #1 hit on both sides of the Atlantic, becoming her first #1 in the US and her first charting single in the UK. The song is very well-known still, being covered on shows like The X Factor quite regularly (along with many other Whitney songs), notably by winner Alexandra Burke in her first audition in 2008!

39. All I Want For Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey (1994) 368,000

220px-All_I_Want_for_Christmas_Is_You_Mariah_Carey.png

From one diva to another, we now have the QUEEN OF CHRISTMAS herself, Mariah Carey *.* All I Want For Christmas Is You is "everyone's favourite Christmas song" (Jameela Jamil, 2014 :jameela:) and is frequently the song that slays The Pogues, this list being no exception.

In all seriousness though, this song is a huge Christmas classic, one which we hear year in, year out and it's always in the top 2 Christmas songs in the chart. I think we all know by now that I love this, it's my favourite Christmas song and whilst it "only" peaked at #2, it's still a massive classic. I must admit, I thought it would be higher in this countdown though!

The Flying Pickets version of Only You seems a bit out of favour these days and nothing on the Yazoo original being heralded, I personally think the opposite - think a capella fits the song really well and it works a bit better than the original for me, always love hearing it at Christmas <3

Think I have that Peter Kay single too - I was so *.* at that video and I couldn't resist buying it, don't think I've listened to the song once since though, I forget there was one!

38. Save Your Love - Renee & Renato (1982) 371,000

f00a2b0120c15e9e8477dbb9d134f083.jpg

Back to the early 80s and yet another #1 single, for four weeks in fact, also nabbing the Christmas #1 in 1982! Renne and Renato were a male/female duo, and this was their only UK top 40 hit. It also hit the top spot in Ireland, Norway and the Netherlands!
