Embrace to record official England World Cup song

Source: MW

Embrace have been chosen to record the official England World Cup song, which will be called World At Your Feet.

The Independiente act, who are currently number two in the singles chart, were approached by the Football Association earlier this year. Demos of the World Cup track have been recorded, but it is still not known when the official version will be released.

The deal was negotiated between FA marketing manager Tom Harrold and Independiente, following an initial suggestion by EMI Music Publishing.

The band's singer Danny McNamara says, "The band can't wait to get into the studio and record the new track. We think we've got a really good song and hopefully it will repeat the success of previous songs such as New Order's World in Motion."

Harold says, "The official England World Cup song has become something of an institution and is it really important that we have an original and exciting track. We're confident that Embrace's song will capture the imagination of the fans and players alike.

"With only 75 days to go until England's first game against Paraguay everybody has been asking who will get the gig. We'd like to think we've pulled off something of a coup by bagging such a great band and keeping it secret...until now."

Good choice of band, looking forward to hearing the song! I actually heard the song McFly wrote for the world cup, and it was pretty good too, quite singalong and anthemic, but obvoiusly they didn't get chosen!

Did anyone here Danny McNamara from the band on the Chris Moyles show on Radio1 this morning.

They joked about how PopStars want to be Footballers & vice-versa & Chris Moyles joked about getting David Beckham miming as the lead singer, with Paul Robinson on drums, Wayne Rooney on keyboards etc.

Am I the only one who thinks that would make a really good video?

Well, if it's anything like the rest of their recent output, we'll win the World Cup by boring the opposition to sleep.

It would be quite funny

Were they involved in that 'Top Of The World' song or did I imagine it?

Nah, you're mixing them up with (and not surprisingly either) Ocean Colour Scene.

It also featured Tommy from Space along with Ian McCulloch and tuneless backing vocals from the Spice Girls.

Aah. Thanks.

That song was awful and rightly overshadowed by the unofficial songs (3 Lions '98 and Vindaloo).

I can't really remember it. Would probably have been much better if they'd just let Echo & the Bunnymen do it and not tried to create some supergroup of britpop hangers-on coupled with a desperate inclusion of the spice girls to boost sales.
I like Embrace, but they never struck me as a band capable of an England World Cup song. It will be interested to see what they come up with.
