Posted December 16, 20159 yr Listening to the Clash song, London Calling, reveals a very strong British flavour not just in the lyrics, but in the strong metered beat & hammer guitar chords with hard vocalized slogan refrains from the lead singer. I wonder if you can add anything to that point-of-view. Edited December 16, 20159 yr by Jacob S
December 16, 20159 yr They are definitely one of the most interesting bands to come out of the punk era. A combination of the timing and the name meant that they were immediately associated with the punk movement. However, they went on to demonstrate far wider musical influences (and talent) than most of their contemporaries.
December 17, 20159 yr Author I think the American bands, the Knack, and the Ramones, were as close to being the American version of the Clash than any other bands in the 1970's.
December 19, 20159 yr The Clash are by far the most talented of the punk bands. They started off with roots in rock 'n' roll (check Strummer's previous band The 101ers), embraced the three-chord sound quickly but were one of the first to move out to a classic rock - thanks partly to Guy Stevens as producer on London Calling - and reggae and dub influenced sound. Best not mention Cut the Crap.
December 19, 20159 yr I like The Skids as much as The Clash, for British punk bands, and for their American counterparts, The Ramones hands down for me..... To quote The Clash, 'now you've got to let me know, should I stay of should I go?'
December 21, 20159 yr Author I like The Skids as much as The Clash, for British punk bands, and for their American counterparts, The Ramones hands down for me..... To quote The Clash, 'now you've got to let me know, should I stay of should I go?' I will give Skids a listen. What is their best tune you think?
December 22, 20159 yr In going through some of their videos on youtube, it seems to me now as The Skids are more New Romantic than punk, by rights... That said, a couple of songs to try and listen to are Masquerade, Charade, Working For the Yankee Dollar.....
December 31, 20159 yr Not sure how this morphed into a discussion about The Skids. But you'll want to hear 'Into the Valley' by them before anything else. Not sure in what way they are new romantic though.
