A bit later than I'd planned, but let's do 40-31!

40. Sia - Alive

Alive_by_Sia.png

Sia placed #3 on my 2014 list with the mighty 'Chandelier', and here she places 40th with what is essentially 'Chandelier' part II, but what's wrong with that? This is a bonafide belter.

39. Gregory Porter - Liquid Spirit (Claptone remix)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51FRRZbYZ4L._SY300_.jpg

I've seen this guy's name bandied about, but I know nothing about him and if I'm honest I don't even know the original version of the song. This is a toe-tapping, footstomping funky tune with a hint of soul. Guaranteed to ignite a dancefloor.

38. Disciples - They Don't Know

a6e76473826e3e9a153d3ddcaaed5391.jpg

That bassline, my god it's delicious.

37. Jason Derülo - Cheyenne

Jason_Derulo_Cheyenne.jpg

The first ever song by him I properly love and it's the one that flops, typical isn't it? This is a lot more interesting than his usual output, I love the tight production and the new wave-esaue sound of it. Lyrically excellent, a fantastic chorus, it has everything a top notch pop song should have.

36. Carly Rae Jepsen - I Didn't Just Come Here To Dance

Carly_Rae_Jepsen_-_Emotion.png

The first of 5 (!) entries from the mighty Jepsen, this is an album track that bafflingly didn't find a place on the main edition of E•MO•TION. One of the dancier tracks on the album, the subject matter is about what you'd expect from its title... she didn't just come here to dance, she came to make a connection - with you.

35. Delta Goodrem - Wings

Delta_Goodrem_-_Wings_(Official_Single_Cover).png

I've always been a Delta fan, and this was a storming comeback for her. It did nothing over here (of course) but bagged a couple of weeks at #1 in Australia. An anthemic statement of empowerment, for some reason I always link this in my mind with Loreen's 'Euphoria'.

34. Seinabo Sey - Younger (Kygo remix)

Younger_Seinabo_Sey.jpg

This lush melodic piece has over time emerged as one of Kygo's best works for me.

33. The Vamps - Wake Up

The_Vamps_Wake_Up_album_cover.jpg

I think this may have now edged out 'Somebody To You' as my favourite The Vamps song. It's so so brilliant, a different and more mature sound for them. Very anthemic, hints of CHVRCHES/MGMT riffs in there too. This unfairly flopped, but with that almighty cock-up of a release what else was gonna happen?

32. Adam Lambert - The Light

Adam_Lambert_-_The_Original_High_(Official_Album_Cover).png

Best song on the album hands down, really needs to be a single but it most likely will never be.

31. Justin Bieber - Sorry

Justin_Bieber_-_Sorry_(Official_Single_Cover).png

Like everyone else, I'm finding it hard to believe how much Bieber has come through this year. This is easily his best for me yet, it's got a nice subdued but hypnotic tropical dance/bashment style to it and it's a thoroughly excellent song in every way. Bravo, Bieber/Skrillex!

Edited by mr_pmt

Absolutely adore Wings  Hadn't listened to much Delta before but fell in love with her after I heard wings

Also agree that Sorry is Justin's best song and also love Wake Up

Sia - Alive - So good

Liquid Spirit remix - Should have been huge tbh :(

Disciples - Love this

Cheyenne - Good not amaing

Carly Rae album track - I do like this song

Wings - Not bad song

Younger - Love this

Wake Up - Love The Vamps Should be hugs

Sorry - Yes

Fallen behind on this, damnit!

30. Mike Mago & Dragonette - Outlines

http://www.themusicninja.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/artworks-000085439587-3xwzjn-original-600x600.jpg

I wasn't overly keen on this at first, but it grew and grew and has been a key dance track to get me into the party mood all year long. This was a UK top 10 hit early in the year. Dragonette also have a part in a track to come later, but can it be number one?

29. Carly Rae Jepsen - When I Needed You

Carly_Rae_Jepsen_-_Emotion.png

The second of 5 (!) entries from Miss Jepsen, this cut from her fantastic album is so deliciously 80s, so much that it could be lifted straight out of that era rather than being directly influenced by it. The song is basically a fuck you to a lover who did her wrong and refuses to let go, and how she ain't changin' for no man.

28. Elliphant - Love Me Badder

http://www.beatcog.com/pictures/elliphant-love-me-badder.jpg

Reviewers were damn right that this is the sort of thing Rihanna should be doing these days, a beautifully emotive electro-pop number about pure and unparalleled desire for someone. I was counting on this blowing up over the summer but alas, it never happened. That's Radio 1 for you.

27. Demi Lovato - Confident

Demi_Lovato_-_Confident_(Official_Single_Cover).png

Loved 'Cool For The Summer' as I did, this totally eclipsed it for me and got me hooked. It's a gutsy stomper which in sound is almost like the half way point between Marilyn Manson's 'The Beautiful People' and something from Christina's Back To Basics era. What is wrong with being confident, eh? Nothing.

26. Susanne Sundfør - Delirious

artworks-000106114715-13jybz-t500x500.jpg

This was a discovery I made thanks to Jake on the now defunct Plug (RIP), a towering electronic number outlining a power struggle in a very twisted way, a lot of intensity in this track.

25. Calvin Harris & HAIM - Pray To God

Calvin_Harris_-_Pray_to_God_(feat._Haim).png

This isn't my favourite thing Calvin's ever been involved in, but it's pretty up there! This is something really different for him, there's a lot more to it than his usual which may explain why it didn't catch on (undeservedly). :(

24. Carly Rae Jepsen - Your Type

Carly_Rae_Jepsen_-_Your_Type_(Official_Single_Cover).jpg

Third entry for HRH Carly, this is the current single and a big highlight from E•MO•TION. 80s inspired electronic new wave stomper about unrequited love/the pain of pining for an unattainable friend (or anyone, for that matter). Fact: every person I have played this song to has loved it, just imagine what it could do with the right exposure?

23. Blonde Feat. Karen Harding - Feel Good (It's Alright)

Feel_Good_(It's_Alright).jpg

Bafflingly, another one Radio 1 ignored despite having it as track of the day (and despite both artists' previous singles both being massive hits), also I would say a casualty of the transition to OA/OS (along with 'Run Away With Me'), which is a shame as it's bloody fantastic and should have been a massive hit (I am a bit bitter about this, as you can probably tell). Such hands in the air anthem!

22. Jess Glynne - Hold My Hand

Hold_My_Hand_cover.png

It's overplayed, but it's a brilliant feelgood track which deserved its success. I knew from the moment I heard it that I was hearing something magic and it had big potential, and it certainly fulfilled it.

21. Feder Feat. Lyse - Goodbye

0004063565_350.jpg

I discovered this back in about June at a house party, a couple of months before they tried to push it here. It's not the most commercial sounding track in the world, so I had a feeling commercial success may elude it (it missed the top 100 despite Radio 1 support). It's summery, it has a hypnotic rhythm and the guitars create a nice chilled by the beach in summer vibe. Beautiful.

Delirious yesss *.*! what an epic track, also loving Alive, They Don't Know, Sorry, Love Me Badder etc. here

So much Carly :drama:

Hoping Kylie pops up in some form.

20. Walk The Moon - Shut Up And Dance

Walk_the_Moon_-_Shut_Up_and_Dance_(Official_Single_Cover).png

The random indie-pop one hit wonder of the year goes to these guys. This is fairly mindless and ultra cheesy, but it was a defining feelgood track of the year for me and I never got bored of it.

19. Joe Stone - The Party (This Is How We Do It)

artworks-000116643757-50ew5v-t500x500.jpg

A remix of Montell Jordan's 1995 track, which musically captures the essence of 1997 so well. This had me busting moves on dancefloors throughout the summer and even now it's a party essential for me.

18. Major Lazer & DJ Snake Feat. MØ - Lean On

Major_Lazer_and_DJ_Snake_-_Lean_On_(feat._MØ).png

You all know this one, it's one of the year's defining hits and it's a masterpiece. I'm fairly confident this will still be remembered and regarded highly as a classic 15-20 years from now.

17. Karen Harding - Say Something

Karen_Harding_-_Say_Something.png

Bouncy pop-house number from a formal X-Factor contestant, went on to be a fairly sizeable hit early on in the year. The bassy part just after the middle 8 is so the best thing about this track. God only knows what's happening to her career now or why she didn't follow this up quickly.

16. Dr. Kucho! & Gregor Salto Feat. Ane Brun - Can't Stop Playing (Makes Me High) (Oliver Heldens remix)

http://www.themusicninja.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Oliver-Heldens-Cant-Stop-Playing-Remix.jpg

For me, this is the best thing Oliver Heldens has put his name to so far. That breakdown after the first chorus almost makes my brain fall out every time.

15. G.R.L. - Lighthouse

G.R.L._-_Lighthouse.png

I firmly believe this was robbed of the chance to be a hit due to unfair snubbing by radio and TV. A touching, emotional and heartfelt tribute to their deceased bandmate and relatable lyrics for anyone who has suffered with depression. I did shed a tear when I first saw the video as well.

14. Madonna - Living For Love

Living_for_Love_Remixes_cover.png

This was a brilliant return for Madonna and I certainly believe it deserved to be a hit for her (but by the same token, it probably wouldn't have even made the top 40 without that Brits performance. I always go wild to this on a night out if I hear it, like a girl gone wild.

Madonna features again later on, but can she claim the coveted #1?

13. Martin Solveig + GTA - Intoxicated

Intoxicated_Martin_Solveig.jpg

It's fair to say this was the defining dance track of late summer for me, I was obsessed and had to put it on at every party I went to (and dance like a lunatic). I was so elated to see this become a decent sized top 5 hit too, I never expected that!

12. Troye Sivan - WILD

Wild_by_Troye_Sivan.png

Beautiful, mesmerising and captivating - and that's just the boy himself. Nah, on a serious note this just melts me down to the core.

11. Dada, Paul Harris & Dragonette - Red Heart Black

artworks-000135133390-sne2gh-t500x500.jpg

Another amazing dance track to feature Martina of Dragonette's vocals, this came up at the back end of the year so I'm hoping it still might have chart potential in the future. This has everything a commercial vocal house track needs, and it's a real roof raiser. Please do something at some point, it's too good not to!

I never really understood what went wrong with Lighthouse. It wasn't radio unfriendly in the slightest, most people who heard it lied it... It was very good aswell. It's a shame they split up afterwards, but that does make them the second band whose last single was called Lighthouse.

Currently Karen Harding's second single "Open My Eyes" is on pre-order, scheduled for 12 February.

I now present to you, the top 5 most shocking moments in music last year. My top 5 horrors

5. Selena Gomez - Same Old Love

Same_Old_Love_by_Selena_Gomez.png

I am partial to a bit of Selena, but this is just awful in every way. It can't be defended.

4. Ellie Goulding - On My Mind

Ellie_Goulding_-_On_My_Mind.png

I don't think I'll ever be able to fathom what she was thinking with this, there's no aspect of a tuneful melody and the clunky verses just do not flow, and then there's the flat attempt at a chorus. Lyrically it's a lame attempt at dissing an ex dalliance (some suggest it's a reply song to Ed Sheeran's 'Don't'). For me listening to this is torture, a horrible jarring song.

3. Rihanna - Bitch Better Have My Money

Bitch_Better_Have_My_Money_cover.png

Rihanna continues her reign of terror with this, a shouty load of nonsense and a generic tuneless attempt at being "arty" R&B. I think one of the main things that annoys me about this (like with a lot of the songs on ANTI), she's trying so hard to be ghetto and Rihanna just cannot pull that off.

2. Silento - Watch Me

We usually get one urban novelty song each year filtering through, and this is 2015's. Just utter bloody garbage, in a similar way to 'Crank That' (but thankfully not quite that bad).

1. Rihanna, Kanye West + Paul McCartney - FourFiveSeconds

FourFiveSeconds_cover.png

All I hear in this is 3 people who got immensely pissed, went into the studio early in the morning and knocked out a random improvised jam here and then... and this is the result of it. Horrible horse shit, only Rita Ora's 'Shine Ya Light' prevents this from being the worst song of the decade so far for me.

On to more positive things later this evening - the top 10 shall kick off.
