Dickensian is an ambitious new drama from the BBC that features a world where all characters created by Charles Dickens live in the same world and interact with each other. It is written by Tony Jordan and Sarah Phelps, known especially for their work on EastEnders and the series consists of 20 half-hour episodes. The Dickens characters featured include Scrooge, Nancy, Fagin and Amelia Havisham.

Two episodes in and rather enjoying this. Some of the connections between characters are quite clever.
I watched the first couple of episodes and I don't think I can stick with it. It was a bare attempt/commission but I'm not sure it's worked completely.
I think it really has, it's unusual, exciting and very different. The BBC obviously excel at 'straight' period drama's, but they are often a little dull and by the book, whereas this is fresh and often quite fun. It may drag a little at 20 episodes, but I hope it doesn't because I really like the idea of this kind of thing being done more.
Because it tries to weave new stories and relationships for such well worn and well known characters.

Tried hard at the start but has failed quite badly I feel. Far too ambitious and yet so unambitious. Finally decided to stop watching after 15 episodes and if I hear Caroline Quentin say "Bumble" or Pauline Collins say "gin" one more time I will scream.

It has been axed following disappointing viewers and costing £10m to make.

I think the root of the problems was the scheduling. As already discussed in the BARB ratings thread, if it had been positioned in a weekly Sunday slot, it would have been a lot more consistent rather than being scattered throughout the Christmas period and on weekdays.

I think even the ratings it got over Christmas were probably a bit underwhelming given how much hype it had as well as the cost.

At least it wasn't as disastrous as Jekyll and Hyde in the ratings which was also pretty expensive, I seem to recall!

bbc 1 have canceled the show after 1 (very long) series.

that's what the article i read said. the actual headline

This was 20? episodes. So for one season of a UK show that is lots. That is basically 3 seasons worth for other shows.
