Last night, Strictly beat The X Factor by 4m. The X Factor only got 5.76m which is apparently 800,000 lower than last year. Strictly got 9.78m.

Exactly 14.00m (53.3%) viewers for Bake Off last night :o It's highest overnight ever and should be it's highest consolidated rating ever too.

It peaked at 14.72m (55.3%).

Incredible!! :o Gives the show a overnight series average of 10.74m (it was 10.38m excluding the final).

So it's now not just The Voice where the ratings fall off a cliff when it gets to the live shows! Not sure what's happening there, maybe people just prefer over-edited nonsense because they've become so used to it with all the other shows as well.

Very strong ratings for The Missing, happy that is performing well because it has been brilliant so far! Pleasantly surprised at how well The Apprentice did as well, thought it would be around 1m less.

The Last Leg seems to have grown a lot in popularity, especially after Rio 2016. First Dates on the other hand seems to have lost it's popularity that it was amassing!

Taskmaster is doing brilliantly too.

BBC One really pulling in some big ratings last night! Planet Earth II was over 2.5m ahead of X Factor!

Strictly Come Dancing: 10.24m (43.1%)

Planet Earth II: 9.23m (36.1%)

Poldark: 5.76m (26.3%)

No exact figure for X Factor but it was rounded to 6.5m (probably including +1 as well).

I thought Planet Earth II would do well but certainly not that well! I was expecting around 7-8m.

Exact figure for The X Factor was 6.49m (25.3%). That's actually a normal Sunday figure for the show this year, which is good considering I believe it clashed with Planet Earth II for a period of time. Fantastic for PE II though, I knew it would be a killer rating but I expected 7 million or literally just over 8m, not at all 9m!

The first episode of the original series (aired 5 March 2006) was watched by 9.41m according to BARB 7-Day figures. Back then, these 7-Day figures didn't add that much more from the overnights, but I think it's safe to say last night's episode got higher overnights than the original first episode, and will surely receive higher 7-Day ratings. Not sure how much these documentaries timeshift like - Attenborough and the Giant Dinosaur from January this year improved from 7.51m to 8.06m. Would be nice if this could crack 10m though.

In an hour or so, we'll find out the official rating for the Bake Off final!

A HUGE night of ratings last night!

Countryfile: 6.68m (31.7%)

Strictly Come Dancing: 10.90m (45.0%)

Planet Earth II: 10.63m (40.2%)

My Mother and Other Strangers: 5.25m (20.8%)

(including +1...)

The Next Great Magician: 3.25m (13.9%)

The X Factor: 6.38m (24.1%)

I'm a Celebrity: 10.66m (44.3%)

Can't remember the last time there were 3 10m+ shows on one night and almost 11m for Strictly :o

It seems like you could pinpoint 2012 as the year things started going wrong for The X Factor. 2011 did see a big drop from the previous year, but the show was never going to continue out-peaking itself and 2011 saw major changes (almost all-new judges across the panel, the judges having to pick one of their own acts to be eliminated in Week 1 - only for one of them to return half way through the competition, bullying accusations, Frankie-gate). Perhaps you could say 2011 was the start of the downfall, but I think the show could have recognised these mistakes and fixed itself.

Instead, 2012 saw the wildcard idea return with Christopher flamin' Maloney being brought back into the competition in time for the lives, Rylan Clark being saved from the bottom 2, despite Louis initially saying he wanted to send him home before changing his mind, Ella Henderson being eliminated far too early, and a (and this is kinda subjective) really mediocre final three. 2013 was an attempt save the show and there was a bit of buzz of Sharon returning and it being the 10th series, which did seem to steady the series average, but I think a lot of the damage was already done and they continued to fiddle around with the format in following years.

The X Factor will never be the ratings smash it once was, but they should be focusing on steadying its decline. They started off well this series, with the auditions outdoing last year's at points (particularly when it 10m including +1, which the last series never did), but the lives just didn't spark the same interest.

  • 2 weeks later...

They ruined The X Factor this year with the inclusion of Honey G. A joke act worked in previous years because they knew they were the joke act but she, and the show, seemed to be going along with the fact that she thought that she was in any way credible.

Instead of people tuning into see the great vocalists, all the news was about Honey G.. and it made a mockery of the show.

Do you remember the days of Leona & Alexandra when people were watching just to be wowed by those people?!.. That's what we need again.

If they start to focus on finding a talented vocalist, it would begin to earn back a little bit of it's credibility. I just hope Honey G's single flopping shows them that we are over novelty acts in singing competitions.
