What better way to start off the new year than with no new entries?! With the Christmas effect reflected in this week's chart, it slows down the process of a lot of climbing hits, but that doesn't stop Snakehips, Tinashe & Chance The Rapper all getting their first top 10 hit with "All My Friends". Expect them to keep climbing next week and also be joined there by Elle King who is making big waves on iTunes with "Ex's & Oh's". She's not yet been able to crack the crucial top 50 barrier on Spotify so that'll slow her down for a little while. Disclosure's current tour brings Magnets back into the top 50, while L D R U at last manages a top 50 entry with "Keeping Score", after he so narrowly missed out a year ago as one half of Carmada.

The album chart swaps over from the albums that were bought for people over to the albums people bought for themselves. This is good news for One Direction & Troye Sivan whose chart runs were looking a bit limp due to the high sales period. It seems the biggest new release this week is Rachel Platten's album, so don't expect much to change around the top for a while.

yes Snakehips! :D

by the way the Australian chart seems like the world's freshest at the moment though even this chart has some really long runners, would love for our own to be more like it eventually.

^ It's funny because I've always been jealous of the UK Charts for all the weird and interesting things they have that we never get. I suppose it's just a matter of being conditioned to the local norm that it feels uneventful in comparison

This week "Love Yourself" surpasses the run of "What Do You Mean?" and logs a 5th week at the top. Still doesn't look like it's going anywhere so a 6th and likely a 7th look to be on the cards. Jonas Blue looks to be the nearest contender as he's up past 90% on iTunes, but he'll have to get a sizeable lead due to Justin's 2nd version and big streaming advantage. Snakehips are also just behind Jonas Blue on iTunes but doing even better on streaming so perhaps they're a chance too. Elle King is new to the top 10 this week with "Ex's & Oh's", thus surpassing her US peak. "Never Forget You" finally ends its 10 week run in the top 10 but it looks like Zara should be back next week as "Lush Life" is showing strong momentum. Alessia Cara & Rachel Platten are also ones to watch in that regard. It seems like record companies are on holidays this week as there are hardly any new certifications, and more noticeably, there are no top 100 debuts for a second week in a row, I don't know if that's ever happened before. Likely casualties from that, Mashd N Kutcher & The Chainsmokers should chart next week though. Also watch out for Tracy Chapman possibly re-entering the top 50 next week, giving us 3 versions of the same song in the top 50

Album chart remains a bit dull, perhaps moreso because more people bought the Sam Smith album (I think there was a TV special on). The only new entry on either chart so far this year is Rachel Platten's album at #12. There'll be a bit more going on next week with new albums from David Bowie & Adam Brand but likely Adele (and maybe Justin) won't be moving. She's up to 7 weeks with "25", which is 25 less than "21" managed, but perhaps it can get to 11 weeks, which was "21"'s longest unbroken run at the top. On the note of "21", it becomes the 3rd album since 1988 to surpass 5,000 linear points (ie #1 = 50, #50 = 1) in the top 50, after Shania Twain's "Come On Over" & P!nk's "I'm Not Dead". It actually has a chance to overtake them as they're not far ahead. Incidentally, the longest runner in the history of the ARIA Charts, "The Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac" returns to the top 50, despite constantly being in direct competition (and usually bested) by their "Greatest Hits" set.

It seems like Australia gets all of the US and the UK's biggest hits, and recently even some European hits (like The Avener and Robin Schulz). The UK used to be my favorite chart by far, but Australia is getting up there.

"Love Yourself" notches up its 6th week at #1 which isn't a surprise. This equals its run with "Uptown Funk" & "See You Again", so the last #1 to spend longer there was Justice Crew's "Que Sera" and its excrutiating 9 week run. It looks like next week will be quite a close one. Jonas Blue is #1 on iTunes, but naturally has a bit of a streaming disadvantage which puts the two quite close in the running. What's also worth noting about Jonas Blue this week is that he surpasses the #3 peak of the original Tracy Chapman hit (which is #55 TW). As expected, Zara Larsson gets her 2nd top 10 hit in a row with "Lush Life". An interesting stat from the top 10 this week is that WSTRN are #10 for a 4th (and likely last) week. On the ARIA Charts, this has only been done in the past (for a #10 peaking single) by Rogue Traders' "Don't You Wanna Feel" and Ashlee Simpson's "La La". It is of course worth noting that Eminem spent an absurd 8 weeks at #10 with his #4 peaking "Not Afraid". I believe thanks to some TV promos, Fleur East's UK smash "Sax" finally arrives in our top 40, and roughly a year after they ruined Art vs. Science's "Parlez vous francais?", Mashd N Kutcher are back in the chart, this time potentially improving one of my least favourite songs ever, Len's 1999 hit "Steal My Sunshine". EP sales also help KSI get his first charting entry here.

Now the elephant in the room, all the Bowie entries. As can be expected, the impact isn't quite on the same level as the UK charts, with the highest "Space Oddity" coming in at #31 and there 'only' being 8 of his tracks in the top 100. To note, two of these are debuts, with the non-charting classic "Changes" and of course his last single "Lazarus". "Life On Mars?" would be part of that too if it hadn't gotten its belated chart debut in 2009 thanks to the TV series of the same name. Interestingly, two of his strongest showing tracks on iTunes this past week, "Sorrow" and "Dancing In The Street" don't get an entry, perhaps as they didn't quite do the same on Spotify. But it's interesting to note these two tracks as believe it or not, they are David Bowie's only #1 singles in this country, and both are covers!

Last week I said that Adele would likely be #1 again but I wrote that on Saturday with no possible indication of how the week would unfold. Honestly it's quite possible that "Blackstar" could have been #1 anyway but under the actual circumstances, it does so rather safely selling about twice as much as Adele did last week. To note about "Blackstar", it's David Bowie's 3rd #1 album here, and his first since "Let's Dance". It perhaps helps "Nothing Has Changed" that it was likely more stocked than other Bowie albums (considering it was on the ARIA Chart the previous week) although it was comfortably the 2nd best seller on iTunes during the week. What is most impressive though is that despite only having the impact of 4 chart days, I'm told David Bowie has set a new record for the most albums simultaneously charted. If you go all the way to #100, he has 17 albums on the chart, 2 more than the previous best set by both Michael Jackson & The Beatles.

As has been the case for most of the last few months, we have a week with Justin Bieber and Adele at #1. But that could all be coming to an end next week. Firstly because it looks like Justin's time at the top will finally be over. Partly thanks to increased iTunes exposure, Jonas Blue looks likely to take the top spot next week. Justin may not even be able to hold onto #2 either, as rather surprisingly, it looks like Flume is poised for a big bullet. He has just this week scored his first top 10 hit with "Never Be Like You". His previous biggest hits "Drop The Game" & "Holdin On" both hit their peaks with thanks to triple j's Hottest 100 but this song will see no benefit from that for another year. Speaking of which, the Hottest 100 will impact next week's chart which means depending on what the result is, we could see big re-entries from the likes of The Rubens or Kendrick Lamar, and current charters from Marcus Marr, Major Lazer, Snakehips, DJ Snake, Duke Dumont, L D R U etc could all get sizeable boosts. Meanwhile back on the chart, "Hands To Myself" cracks the top 30, only the 2nd time Selena has done so as a lead artist. Kiiara has a surprise hit that could threaten for top 10 soon. Australia was one of the few places that let The Chainsmokers into the top 5 in 2014 with "#SELFIE" and now they're making a move with "Roses" which should go top 20 next week. We also have surely a new record for most visible chart movement due to streaming, with Adele's "All I Ask" sliding from #36 on the digital tracks chart to #65 officially. On the bright side, she lets Kanye West's "Monster" into the chart for the first time ever.

The album chart wasn't quite as clear this week just considering how big a lead Bowie had last week, but Adele has re-assumed the top spot this week. Her 8 weeks at #1 with "25" is now exactly one quarter of the way to "21"'s time spent on the podium. However Adele may have another interruption next week as Australian indie dance trio RÜFÜS released their 2nd album this week, following up their gold selling debut which hit #1. With them at #1 on iTunes and likely to get a healthy boost thanks to triple j later in the week, they look poised to take over. Meanwhile Panic! At The Disco have their/his 2nd highest charting album to date with "Death Of A Bachelor" coming in at #3. They have only done better with "Pretty. Odd." which debuted at #1. Also as an interesting factoid this week, despite many of the albums dropping, and 4 even dropping out, David Bowie has a further 4 re-entries and 1 debut on the top 100 album chart this week, which means he breaks the record he set last week, with 18 albums on the chart now.

After 3 straight months of Adele & Justin Bieber, we have a new #1 single this week, courtesy of Jonas Blue for reasons I can't quite grasp. It's possibly thanks to some quick promotion on the iTunes front page as it's looking like taking a decent fall next week. But that may have happened anyway with the big movers on the way. At this rate, it looks like next week's #1 will be ZAYN's "PILLOWTALK", but his longevity is yet to be proven so perhaps he'll be swept up by Flume's surprise smash which is #2 this week. Rihanna's "Work" looks a likely top 10 debut as well but lack of streaming will severely hurt it. It was actually supposed to debut this week as it was top 20 on digital sales, but it just didn't because...ARIA Charts. The main big news on the chart front this week is that on Tuesday we had the triple j Hottest 100 poll, which was unfortunately won out by The Rubens, which nets them a top 10 peak after previously hitting #25 a few months back. Runner up "King Kunta" also gets a new peak, though only 1 higher than previously, while scattered songs also climb, most notably "Keeping Score" which cracks the top 20. The sudden boost of hype also allows MØ & Tame Impala's perennial bubblers to finally debut, for Tame Impala this is their 6th top 100 entry while they've still never had a top 50 (or even 70 I think) hit. Craig David fever makes it over here too and he picks up his first chart since "Hot Stuff (Let's Dance)".

On the album chart, we're moving right along into 2016 as Adele is unseated by a new debut, this time from Sydney's RÜFÜS. Their 2nd album "Bloom" comfortably debuts at #1, just like their debut album "Atlas" did so in mid-2013. The hype of this + their Hottest 100 success helps push them to have 4 tracks in the top 100 singles this week. Megadeth enter at #6 with what is their highest ever charting album here. Eagles continue to climb with the news of Glenn Frey's passing, with their Greatest Hits set hitting the top 10 for the first time. Next week will see new albums from Rihanna & Charlie Puth taking effect, but it looks like Sia will trump all to pick up her 2nd #1 album.

One Direction scored their first, and to date only #1 hit with "Drag Me Down" last year. That was of course after Zayn left the group. So with "Pillowtalk" comfortably reaching #1 this week, it means every original 1D member has hit #1 exactly once! In doing so, he keeps Flume at bay for another week, but it does look most likely that he'll reach #1 next week as he's taken the lead on iTunes and Spotify. A lack of streaming hurts Rihanna slightly as her former iTunes #1 "Work" can only come in at #10. For Rihanna this is her 28th top 10 single, while it's Drake's 4th. Such is Flume's clout currently, a non-official single he dropped with the not-so-chart-typical collaborators of Vince Staples and Kučka debuts at #23, which is higher than the peak of his lead single "Some Minds" from last year.

Sia first appeared on the Australian charts back in 1999, when Zayn was 6 no less, but she wouldn't find commercial form until 2010's "We Are Born" debuted at #2. She'd take another 4 years for her next album but "1000 Forms Of Fear" did take her to the top. Now, less than 2 years later, she has a 2nd #1 album with "This Is Acting", keeping Adele at bay, an artist she collaborated with on the album. The release strategy of "ANTI" has slightly stunted its chart position as it comes in at #5, though this is higher than "Unapologetic" got and the same peak as "Talk That Talk". Surprisingly, Rihanna has yet to score a #1 album here, having only reached #2 with "Good Girl Gone Bad" and "Loud". Prog rockers Dream Theater tend to sneak into the top 20 with their albums, but this week they've scored their first ever top 10. "x" & "1989" both leave the top 10 this week, having only previously missed a total of 4 weeks between them since their late 2014 releases. They may be back next week though as it doesn't seem there's much of note released this week.

In events that confuse me greatly, after breaking out as a huge name in Australia's dance/electronic scene back in 2012, Flume had some crossover hits but never a top 10. This week his track "Never Be Like You" hits #1, which is perhaps the first Australian dance song to go to #1 in nearly 10 years. He has a handy lead on iTunes and Spotify at the moment so he's probably not moving away just yet, though concerningly Lukas Graham seem to be making a move towards the top. twenty one pilots have not made the singles chart at all before, but "Stressed Out" goes all the way to #3 this week. A sentence I never thought I would type is that The Chainsmokers have scored their 2nd top 10 hit this week.

The album chart has a new #1 and much like 2 years ago when INXS were dominating the top of the chart, it's due to a TV miniseries. This time dedicated to Australian music icon Molly Meldrum, best known as a record producer and TV personality who often had a hand in breaking artists even before they became internationally huge. The soundtrack is largely of '70s/'80s hits and goes for a pretty nice price for a pretty large collection. The collection has been in the chart since last year but the series only started airing this week hence the big climb. Likely it will continue at #1 next week with competition from Ronan Keating, The Jezabels, and maybe Kanye? "Blackstar" managed to hold out one week longer here than in the UK as the highest Bowie album, but this week "Nothing Has Changed" takes over. Doing our country proud, the highest Australian debut comes from The Wiggles, who out-do new albums from The Cult, Foxes, Eric Prydz & Wiz Khalifa.

Anybody knows where to obtain sales figures for the Australian single market ?

Thanks !

Well done to Flume on making #1! Smoke & Retribution is the better track but I digress (obviously NBLY is much more accessible though)

We have a new #1 and perhaps if I ignore it, it will go away. Flo Rida scores his 15th top 10 hit with "My House", after what has been a slow time for him picking up hits. His last top 10 before it was "Can't Believe It" in 2013. The highest debut of the week is a bit of an oddity to explain. Tim Minchin is a popular Australian comedian/musician/everything inbetween, and in the space of a few days, he wrote, recorded and released a song and it was soon #1 on iTunes. The song is about the Catholic figure George Pell who is supposed to be giving a hearing later this month regarding victims of child abuse from the church over the last several decades, something which Pell has been accused of covering up in the past. Only problem is that he has been too sick to fly for some time now, but the proceeds of the song are going to the abuse victims so they can fly over to Rome for the hearing. Spoiler alert: the song is not exactly in favour of Pell's actions. Hilltop Hoods continue to prove themselves as one of the highest selling local acts of the 21st century as they score their 5th top 10 hit. Since 2009 they've only once missed the top 10 with a pre-album single. Lower down, Cyrus does what the previous X Factor winner Marlisa has not yet been able to do, and scored a second top 50 hit. The longest running top 50 hit of all time "Uptown Funk" is perhaps surprisingly prevented from re-entering this week due to streaming, as it's #51 this week.

"Molly" is still airing so the soundtrack stays at #1, selling I think almost double what it sold last week. It will face stiff competition next week with Hilltop Hoods releasing a new album of sorts that is so far this week holding strong at #1 on iTunes. The highest debut on the album chart this week also comes from a local act, this time The Jezabels with their 3rd album. It's a slight slip for them to debut at #4 with their 3rd album, as they previously hit #2 with their first two, which have the incongruous honours of being blocked by Adele and then MKTO. After them it's Ronan Keating who is a regular visitor to the top 10 but has only hit #1 with his Mother's Day cash in for 2009. This is I believe the first time he's hit the top 10 with original material in about 10 years.

It has been 28 years since we last had a chart dated on the 29th of February. Most interesting to note at the top end of the singles chart this week is that The Chainsmokers score a 2nd top 5 hit with "Roses", after "#SELFIE" peaked at #3 in 2014. Considering that landed only at #100 in the Year End chart, one would suspect "Roses" will become the bigger hit. "Work" returns to its debut position thanks to the video, and should move upwards next week, possibly surpassing "Russian Roulette"'s peak of #7, her lowest peaking lead single. Even though insta grat insta sales aren't part of the chart anymore, the lead up to The 1975's album release means that "Somebody Else" oddly becomes their highest charting single to date, 1 position above "Love Me". Another week and another charity song, though this time with much less snark. Missy Higgins returns to the top 50 after a 4 year absence, with the song "Oh Canada" (no relation to the Canadian national anthem) dedicated to a drowned Syrian child, because Australia's government has a questionable history regarding asylum seekers.

The album chart has minor history being made this week. Whether or not you only know of them through this thread, Hilltop Hoods are undoubtably one of the highest selling Australian acts of this century. They got their big breakthrough with their underground hit "The Nosebleed Section" in 2003, which despite never making the top 50, has gone on to be a double platinum selling single. It still sells well to this day so it could soon go triple platinum. Basically ever since then, every album they put out goes straight to #1, often for two weeks. In fact, their last 5 albums have gone platinum, and their last 3 albums have gone double platinum. Their latest album is a bit of a different spin, mostly comprised of tracks from their last 2 albums reworked with a symphony orchestra, plus a bunch of new tracks. They did a similar thing in 2007 though without the new material, and that album only peaked at #8. So this new one becomes their 5th #1 album which ties them up with Crowded House, Silverchair & Powderfinger as having the most #1 albums of any Australian group. If you extend that to all Australian artists, they've got a way to go to catch up to The 12th Man (7), John Farnham (9) & Jimmy Barnes (10). Elsewhere on the chart, though he doesn't have quite the same media push here, Jack Garratt has proved quite popular to debut in the top 10. Despite their last album housing a top 10 hit and this one housing...nothing, Simple Plan manage to chart higher than they did last time. On the other hand, after two #3 albums, Wolfmother are far from their prime at #17. Next week we'll have a battle on our hands as The 1975, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis & Hillsong Young & Free all have albums contesting the top spot, though the "Molly" soundtrack is still selling by the bucketload so that can't be counted out either.

how are Hilltop Hoods still enough of a thing to get a #1 debut in the album chart??? I remember them being big [in Aus] about 10 years ago and not really liking or remembering any of their songs.

^ I reckon that they come across as likeable both on & off the record, especially compared to their contemporaries, and Australian hip-hop has really come leaps & bounds in popularity this decade, with perhaps the most dedicated album buyers outside of metal.

In fact, we now have a new peak for Aussie hip-hop in general with "1955" hitting #2 this week (miles behind #1 of course), the previous best being 360's "Boys Like You" which hit #3 and has sold a bit over 300,000 copies so it's also the highest seller. Rihanna belatedly hits top 5 with "Work" and with a lot of thanks to streaming as it's really struggling to catch on with the buying public by comparison. We don't actually have any new arrivals in the top 10 this week. Daya looks to get there next week though. Sia & Macklemore could do so too but they're lagging a bit on streaming which will hold them back. Fifth Harmony get their second top 50 hit this week and it looks top 20 bound next week. Taylor Swift's latest single debuts just within the top 50, being shoved down about 18 places by streaming, but it's also technically her first debut since 2014, since half of "1989" debuted the week it came out, and that's what was picked as singles.

Despite the fact that they don't really get much airplay anywhere in Australia, The 1975 have picked up quite a following over the years. Their first album only peaked at #29, but has continued to sell steadily over the years. The new one with that dreadful title comes straight in at #1. Not much of note can be said on the length of it though, as Bring Me The Horizon hit #1 in 2010 with an even longer album title. This was also a busy week with 5 debuts in the top 10. Perhaps the surprising revelation of it is that despite a huge selling #2 peaking album a few years back, and a fresh #1 smash that's still in the charts, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's latest collaborative album only comes in at #6. Perhaps the pre-order was left off until it was too late. Local group Hands Like Houses had their last album peak at the unlucky position of #51, but they've done a lot better to make #7 this time. Right behind them is another local group, our very own glorified Oasis-nostalgia group DMA's with their debut album. Even though it was released in 2014 in the US, for some reason Chase Rice's debut album only just got released here and it cracks the top 40. Next week I once again have no idea what will be #1. Expect top 10 debuts from locals such as Tonight Alive, Urthboy & The Cat Empire, and perhaps also Miike Snow & Kendrick Lamar.

We have a new #2 single via twenty one pilots, seemingly out of holding on as it feels like they peaked weeks ago. Two new top 10 hits this week, firstly from Daya, but also more of note from Sia who gets her 8th top 10 hit (and 4th as lead artist) with "Cheap Thrills". As "Alive" peaked at #10, this is now the highest charting single from her forthcoming album "This Is Acting". Mike Posner's recent top 50 hit handily halves its position and solidifies it as at least his 2nd biggest hit, but Fifth Harmony go one better and divide their last week position by 3. "Work From Home" looks likely to reach the top 10 next week and outpeak "Worth It" in the process. For reasons I haven't figured out, some random things that were lingering in the low sales region around December are back in a big way lately, most notably the YouTube cover version of Justin Bieber's "Love Yourself" which asserted itself in the iTunes top 5 and doesn't seem in any hurry to drop. Streaming is certainly holding it back though, considering it is just 1 position below the original track on digital tracks chart. Then there's also Disturbed's Simon & Garfunkle cover which is also being hit hard by streaming, but looks to be their 2nd top 50 hit next week. Also to note is that X Factor winner Samantha Jade has had a bit of a rocky album campaign, but has recently been on Home & Away where I believe her song has been played a bit as well, so now "Always" comes in at #36 and looks to be her biggest hit since "Up" nearly 2 years ago.

The album chart was always set to be an oddity this week, possibly due to low sales as I can't imagine them cracking 10K this week. Anyway the result of this is that The Cat Empire somehow get their 2nd #1 album. For any non-Australian readers, The Cat Empire are a kind of ska-reggae ensemble band who were a huge festival draw in the early to mid '00s. They seemingly stopped being relevant at least 8 years ago, but their albums always continued to chart high, just this week they seem to have had luck on their side. What would have been a more interesting #1 was not to be, but Kendrick Lamar's surprise album lands at #3, which is still pretty impressive considering that you can count the number of solo rappers who've had more than 1 #1 album here on exactly 1 finger. Some more local debuts lower down, as Tonight Alive get their 2nd top 10 album, and Urthboy gets his 1st (though he also had a top 10 as part of The Herd). Despite having a surprise top 50 hit now, Miike Snow don't quite match the #16 debut of their last album. On a more sombre note, Australian singer/songwriter Jon English passed away this past Wednesday, which with just 2 days of impact has pushed a compilation of his to #23, expect it higher next week, where we'll likely see high debuts from Jeff Buckley, and Matt Corby who may as well be an Australian Jeff Buckley.

As "Alive" peaked at #10, this is now the highest charting single from her forthcoming album "This Is Acting".

Haha, I take it this is a reference to when Jameela used to always refer to '1000 Forms of Fear' as Sia's "forthcoming album", despite it having been released weeks/months beforehand?! I'd forgotten about that.

Your commentaries are excellent by the way! I don't follow Aussie charts closely so it's great to get your insight. ^_^
