It's kinda underwhelming (and borderline bad) to see Gaga underperforming pretty much everywhere though.

I've been a bit under the weather so quick commentary this time. "Closer"'s 7 weeks makes it the 2nd longest runner at #1 this year and it looks likely to get 8 which will match Lukas Graham. We're lagging behind the UK for once with Calum Scott just now hitting #2, and James Arthur looking to have a big jump next week. Streaming amusingly keeps Calvin Harris out of the top 10 for now, though a coin flip if he can get there next week. The huge country collaboration was less than 10 sales away from #1 on iTunes a couple days ago, and sneaks in here with a next week jump likely. On the album chart, Australian Idol Season 2 runner up Anthony Callea hits #1 for the first time in over a decade with an album that is naturally mostly covers. Next week Shawn Mendes will probably debut at #1.

Ouch at GaGa dropping 20 places this week. Although Perfect Illusion has been dropping (or falling out of the charts entirely) like crazy everywhere else too. Side to Side is becoming a hit now, which is great to see. Taylor Henderson, an X Factor alumni, made the charts with Light Up The Dark. That song is a soundtrack for a new Aussie movie called Spin Out. I have seen that trailer many times at the cinemas. Spin Out tanked at the box office, only debuting at #11 with an unimpressive per-theatre average.

Hope you get better soon, DircaDirca!!!

8 weeks at #1 for "Closer" makes it the equal longest runner of the year. It may get another week but things are looking very tight for next week. For one, "Closer" has been knocked down to #3 on iTunes behind James Arthur & Niall Horan, but at the current moment, Calum Scott's combined sales with the Tiesto remix make "Dancing On My Own" the current top seller. With James & Niall a bit behind on streaming, it's possible that Calum could be #1 next week. The Weeknd & Daft Punk both get their 3rd top 10 hits this week thanks to "Starboy", which is a rare song to be boosted into the top 10 on debut thanks to streaming; it was only #11 on the digital tracks chart. Otherwise this is a bit of a light chart on news. Niall & The Chainsmokers should have strong debuts next week.

There's a bit more going on with the album chart with a full set of debuts in the top 3. I made a bad prediction because Shawn Mendes is only #3, a new peak for him nonetheless. At #1 instead is Passenger who reaches #1 after his last two peaked at #2. This means that Bruce Springsteen settles with #2 after his last album chart entry debuted at #1 in 2014. Local rock band Airbourne have been charting progressively (very slightly) higher with each album, their latest getting to #13 this week. Due to being iTunes' album of the week, Keith Urban is currently #1 on iTunes, and given his tendency to do well physically, could pose a decent threat next week. The real battle though will be between Bon Iver, whose last album peaked at #2 behind Adele, and local act Sticky Fingers whose last album peaked at #3.

"Closer"'s 9 weeks at #1 makes it the outright longest runner of 2016. At this stage it looks like it won't last another as the competition is finally catching up. Top contender is James Arthur who is leading on sales and making big strides on streaming, but I can see The Weeknd being not far behind as "Starboy" looks to take the #2 spot on both digital & streaming, which is essentially how "Closer" hit #1 in the first place. It'll be close between those two. Speaking of The Chainsmokers, they can't quite get their 5th top 10 hit this week as "All We Know" debuts at #11. Its sales are dipping but streams increasing so it'll sit around the same spot next week and maybe get in. They missed the top 10 because Niall from One Direction's solo track debuted at #5. Calvin Harris was also able to sneak in, making "My Way" his 13th top 10 hit. There's also a debut for Australian hip-hop stalwarts Bliss N Eso which gives them an 8th top 50 single. Lower down on the chart, we had the big sporting weekend of the year, and most notably for the chart, Vance Joy performed at the AFL Grand Final, which gives him two re-entries, which includes "Riptide", which extends its standing as the longest chart runner ever, now at 122 weeks.

The album chart is loaded with debuts. The top two comes through as predicted, as local reggae-soul-funk-hybrid band Sticky Fingers get their first ever #1 with their 3rd album. This is unlucky times for Bon Iver who debut at #2 for a 2nd time, having been another casualty to Adele's domination in 2011. Speaking of Adele however, her present domination has subsided this week, as "25" leaves the top 10 for the first time ever. Progressive metal band Opeth get their 3rd top 10 album this week, all 3 of which having peaked at #7 incidentally, while it's a first for Banks, with her debut album peaking at #17. Next week could be stacked with debuts again, the top spot likely going to radio station triple j's latest "Like A Version" compilation.

I agree that Starboy would likely to topped the chart soon than Say You Won't Let Go as Starboy performance was more well rounded on sales and streaming than Say You Won't Let Go (It definitely lead the sales and while streaming was rapidly increase over the weeks, but it still fairly behind from Starboy, and Closer streaming)

At long last The Chainsmokers' reign of terror is over, to be replaced by a whole new reign of terror courtesy of James Arthur. This is his first ever #1, "Impossible" having peaked at #2 back in 2013. This is actually its 3rd week #1 on sales, with streams lagging behind. Taking advantage of strong streams is The Weeknd, who has just recently moved to #1 on Spotify, and has "Starboy" climbing to #2, matching the peak of "Can't Feel My Face" last year. He'll need to pick up sales to get to the top, though his streaming advantage might give him more longevity than James Arthur so #1 isn't out of the question yet. The Chainsmokers make up for losing #1 by picking up a 5th top 10 hit with "All We Know". The big debut of the week is for Bruno Mars, which comes as "Uptown Funk" manages its 100th consecutive week on the chart, and "24K Magic" debuts only 1 place lower than that did, both songs having streaming cost them a top 10 debut. John Legend also perhaps surprisingly debuts which may at last give him a top 50 entry that doesn't go to #1.

For the 4th year in a row, the album chart sees a #1 debut for triple j's Like A Version series. As usual, it is allowed on the chart unlike most compilations because the recordings are exclusively released for the compilation. It leaves Green Day unlucky once again as they debut at #2. They haven't had a #1 album since "American Idiot", coming close in 2009 if they hadn't released on the same week as Eminem's "Relapse". At #3 we have former Bee Gee Barry Gibb who charts a solo album for the first time and in style. Like Green Day, Norah Jones returns to the album chart for the first time in 2012, and similarly outpeaks her 2012 effort to land at #4, the highest she's reached since "Not Too Late" reached #2 in 2007. Alter Bridge reach the top 10 for the first time with their 5th album at #6. Meanwhile for OneRepublic, "Oh My My" becomes their first album to debut in the top 10, though "Dreaming Out Loud" and "Native" both climbed into the top 10 thanks to having big hits on them. Swedish metal stalwarts Meshuggah reach the top 10 for the first time with their 8th album. It would also be remiss of me not to mention Sum 41's album "13 Voices" debuting at #13, which is their equal highest charting album to date. Next week we'll have the ultimate Christian rock showdown as Hillsong Worship and Kings of Leon go head to head for next week's #1.

With no opponent garnering a strong enough combination of sales & streams, James Arthur's lead only increases this week. He was briefly toppled on iTunes by the new Little Mix song, which I think might be their first ever iTunes #1, but it's still gaining momentum on Spotify and a midweek release means it can *only* debut at #16. Bruno Mars gets his 12th top 10 hit with "24K Magic". Illy collaborates with another up-and-comer, though this time going international with Anne-Marie appearing on his latest single. It's his 3rd top 20 single and Anne-Marie's 2nd. Maroon 1's new single also instantly outpeaks previous lead-off "Maps", which only got to #30 here, but unfortunately this one looks headed straight for the top 10 next week. Also to look out for next week is the possibility that the dam will finally burst, and we'll be seeing top 50 hits that are only popular because of Spotify flogging them in playlists. We've had Frenship, Joel Adams & Marc E Bassy peak in the top 55 (incidentally, Frenship seem to now be getting some decent sales, but that lines up with them being taken off the Hot Hits Australia playlist so they're still stuck), but I suspect Andy Grammer could crack the top 50 next week with his song that I'm yet to see in the top 200 on iTunes, joy.

I also made another bad prediction on the album chart, with a big boost midweek helping get us another TV series soundtrack to #1. This one is perhaps quite special though because although she had a major contribution to The Sapphires' soundtrack which hit #1 in 2012, this is the first time Jessica Mauboy has been credited on a #1 album, which means that it's the first ever #1 album by an Indigenous Australian artist, although rather than truly representing the style of our Indigenous musical history, it's largely covers of contemporary hits from artists like Avicii, Ed Sheeran, The Clash & Primal Scream. Nonetheless, by debuting at #1, it blocks Hillsong Worship from getting a second #1 album (and 5th for Hillsong in general), having gotten their first last year. Even more of note from this is that Kings Of Leon can only manage to debut at #3 with their 7th album, meaning this will likely be their first album to miss the #1 spot since 2007's "Because Of The Times". Back on the side of increasing fortunes, Australian punk band Trophy Eyes' 2nd album is their first to crack the top 50, and it's all the way up to #8. Former Australian Idol finalist turned indie darling Lisa Mitchell keeps up her run of having all her albums reach the top 10, as her 3rd album debuts at #9. I also want to note The Game debuting in the top 20 if only because his last two albums were never submitted to ARIA and didn't chart even though they could have reached the top 10. Also, the only two diamond certified albums, "x" & "1989" both fall out of the top 50 for the first time ever. Next week we'll likely see another #1 debut which I suspect will be from Michael Buble, though Lady Gaga has been maintaining the top spot on iTunes since the week began, but I suspect it won't be enough.

Oh of Jessica would finally get a #1 with an unimpressive covers album :drama: 3 incredible albums behind her, hopefully this TV series ups her profile even more and when she eventually gets the proper 4th album out she can hit #1 with that too. She does tend to be more of a singles artist though.

In a rare moment, we have no new #1s this week. The singles chart is pretty locked in place at the moment too so it's hard to see it changing unless there's an unexpected jolt thanks to X Factor or something. Nonetheless, Little Mix now pick up their 2nd highest peaker ever with "Shout Out To My Ex" at #4, behind only "Wings"'s #3 peak. Perhaps more impressive though as they've done so out the gate, while "Wings" needed an X Factor performance to get that high. Zara Larsson did perform this past week so "Ain't My Fault" finally cracks the top 20. Otherwise the week's biggest jump in the top 50 goes to Flume's "Say It" courtesy of the Clean Bandit remix giving it a big sales boost. There's also not a lot separating the upper reaches of the chart to the point where Peking Duk's #5 digital debut only lands at #18. They're still lingering outside the Spotify top 50 and may need to get added to the Hot Hits Australia playlist (which gets updated tomorrow) to get the needed boost, if it intends to be another top 10 hit for them. On Spotify, two songs that have achieved 90%+ of their success on there, "Capsize" & "Fresh Eyes" are both able to crack the top 50 now. I expect another one of those songs in the form of Starley's "Call On Me" to do the same next week, even though it's only #842 on iTunes currently. That's also no typo in the 51-100 section above, this week, thanks to the Logan trailer, Johnny Cash's "Hurt" enters the charts for the first time ever.

In a surprise, the album chart was loaded with debuts. OK that's not the surprise, but what is, is that none of them managed to get to #1. With thanks to some promotion on X Factor, and perhaps the buzz of the significance of the #1 debut last week, Jessica Mauboy holds the #1 spot for a 2nd week, beating out some major competition from Lady Gaga, Michael Buble & Elvis Presley. This is not the first time Lady Gaga has missed the #1 spot, as "ARTPOP" also debuted at #2 in 2013 behind Eminem's 2nd week, so both of her most recent albums have been beaten by incumbent #1's. Buble on the other hand hasn't missed #1 since 2005, and his new album is his lowest charting ever major label release, provided it doesn't climb. In increasing fortunes, Korn have their highest charting album since 2002 as they reach #5 this week. Leonard Cohen hits #6 for the 2nd time in a row, while in a rare event, we have a metal band reaching the top 10 with their debut album, that being I Prevail, who've had minor iTunes success with a cover of "Blank Space". Perhaps next week Jessica Mauboy could be #1 again? Top competition will likely be from Avenged Sevenfold & James Arthur.

Does anyone know when exactly will James Arthur perform on X Factor Australia?
Jessica Mauboy's album being more relevant than Lady Gaga's, even considering she's Australian and it's from a TV show, is something I never expected to see

4 weeks at #1 for James Arthur now. Still just #1 on sales and #3 on streams, neither looking like changing in the near future. "Starboy" has been #2 for 4 weeks now which is 1 week longer than "Can't Feel My Face" spent there. The only other news of note in the top 10 is Maroon 5 getting their 9th (and worst) top 10 hit with "Don't Wanna Know". Next week expect Nevada & NEIKED to jump into the top 10, and possibly Peking Duk if their streaming picks up enough. Guy Sebastian gets his first top 50 hit of 2016 after previous single "Candle" missed out, and we get some more heavy streaming/low sales hits cracking the top 50 with "Call On Me" and "Trust Nobody".

Once again the album chart has an unchanged #1 with Jessica Mauboy. Michael Buble saves face by getting a new peak of #2 with his new album, same with Elvis Presley 1 place lower. The top selling digital album of the week was from James Arthur, but low physical sales mean he only debuts at #8, behind new albums from Avenged Sevenfold & Empire Of The Sun. Somewhat lower than usual, Michael Buble's "Christmas" begins its annual reign of terror, though Adele's "25" did it block it last year so we'll have to wait and see if it can get to #1 with less competition. We should be seeing a new #1 next week with big new albums from Bon Jovi & Birds of Tokyo battling for the top.

What went so wrong with the recent Veronicas single? (aside from it not being great)

Presumably radio didn't want to support it because it's so underwhelming. I think they're the type of act that will only ever get radio on side with a really fantastic song (like You Ruin Me and In My Blood were). On Your Side is pure filler.

Mostly more of the same at the top of the singles chart this week, James Arthur is #1 for a 5th week, The Weeknd is #2 for a 5th week, The Chainsmokers are #3 for a 5th week. Maroon 5 reach #6 with "Don't Wanna Know" which is the same peak as their last top 10 hit "Sugar", while as predicted, NEIKED & Nevada both jump into the top 10. Bizarrely this is Fetty Wap's first top 10 hit ever here. A jump in streaming allows locals Peking Duk & Illy climb a little higher in the top 20 despite sales drops, though they'll need a boost in order to get another top 10. Showing how low sales have been this week, Guy Sebastian performed his new song on X Factor this past week, shooting to #1 on iTunes with a huge lead, but his #5 digital rank only amounts to #21. Disturbed also performed on X Factor (there's a sentence I never thought I'd type) and got to #2 on iTunes, but only barely muster a top 50 re-entry. The Chainsmokers' new EP debuts at #23, which you can essentially read as being "Setting Fires" with some added EP sales. We also have "Black Beatles" debuting which I believe is Rae Sremmurd's first foray ever into the Australian charts. It could reach the top 10 next week thanks to huge streams and solid sales.

The album chart does indeed have a new #1 and it comes from Bon Jovi. Unlike in the UK where they perpetually miss the top, they rarely do so here, and "This House Is Not For Sale" becomes their 10th #1 album. Only The Beatles, U2, Madonna & Jimmy Barnes have more than them. But they only narrowly managed it as The Secret Daughter continues to air and gets a weekly sales bump that's enough to keep it still selling strong at #2. This keeps Birds of Tokyo at a #3 debut with their 5th album. Since their 2nd album, they've always reached the top 5, and also a year ago did the same with a Greatest Hits set, though only their 4th album in 2013 could reach the top spot, which is kind of a shame as it's certainly their worst album, while this new one is a solid return to form. There was a time when Robbie Williams could be assured a #1 debut here but he hasn't been able to net a top 50 single this decade and as it turns out, not a #1 album this decade either. His "Swings Both Ways" was a big success that managed to hit #2 though, but this new album reaches the same peak as his 2012 album "Take The Crown". In the world of surprising longevity, local rapper PEZ had some success back in 2008 with a surprise borderline novelty hit "The Festival Song", but sort of disappeared afterwards save a few features here and there. His first new album in 8 years manages his first ever top 50 appearance, and it's all the way up at #7. Next week could be a toss up, with Illy looking a good chance to pick up a #1 album debut, but he'll potentially have competition from recently passed Leonard Cohen, and maybe even Sting.

Lmao at Disturbed

I will never understand the EP rule in the ARIA charts but yay for "Setting Fires" doing some damage :)

I will never understand the EP rule in the ARIA charts but yay for "Setting Fires" doing some damage :)

It can be confusing because they tend to be a bit inconsistent, though my best general understanding is that usually 5 tracks & under = singles, 6 and over = albums. Usually Track 1 is denoted as the 'main' track concerning chart placement, and from that it's flipping a coin as to whether it charts under the song or EP title, though it doesn't actually change anything. All the sales/streams of additional tracks contribute to this, though I imagine in The Chainsmokers' case this excludes DLMD/Closer/All We Know since they're charting on their own, so Setting Fires may well have charted at about the same spot on its own, since Inside Out isn't contributing much. It has made an impact in the past though, for instance 5 Seconds Of Summer would have probably peaked at #3 with She Looks So Perfect if only counting its sales at the time, but the combined impact of EP and EP track sales are what got it to #1. I'll admit though it caught me off chart when I saw this week's chart and before I remembered Setting Fires, I wondered if they'd combined all the hits' streams or sales together into one
