The most important news is obviously that Dua Lipa debuted at #77. Anyway, for a 3rd week in a row we have a new #2 courtesy of Alan Walker, who is oddly climbing much faster here than in the UK, and starting to breathe down the neck of the #1 spot, though he might be too far behind to get there this week. Fifth Harmony also bolt up the chart to #6, making "Work From Home" their 2nd top 10 hit, and highest charting single to date. I can't believe I'm saying this, but for the first time in 8 years, Disturbed are in the top 50 singles, and could go top 20 next week. They're getting hit pretty hard by streaming, but not quite as much as Yo Preston, whose #5 digital position translates to #16 overall. Similarly, you can't even tell that Elle King was back up to #6 on iTunes at the start of the week. 2013 X Factor winner Dami Im is representing Australia in Eurovision this year, and does what "Tonight Again" could not, and debuts on the chart before the event. Another surprise this week with Ladyhawke hitting the singles chart for the first time since "My Delirium" was a top 10 hit in 2009.

We're getting a new #1 on the album chart just about every week. This week's #1 is one that has been pretty much destined for over 4 years. Local singer Matt Corby first rose to fame in late 2007 when he was the runner up on Australian Idol, but rather than signing up to cash in with immediate success, he went and did his own thing, and rebooted his career as one of a few former reality TV stars turned indie darling. He released several EPs to little fanfare, but things changed in a big way with the 4th one in 2011. The track "Brother" exploded as a huge hit, propelling the EP to #3 on the single chart and 6xPlatinum sales. He released another EP about a year later and netted another big top 5 hit in "Resolution", and then proceeded to really keep his fans waiting. At long last though his debut album arrives and goes straight in at #1. In doing so, he blocks a posthumous release from Jeff Buckley (who I imagine is a big influence on him) which instead lands at #2. Australia is perhaps Jeff Buckley's biggest market as he did hit #1 with his first posthumous release "Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk", which Wikipedia tells me hit #1 nowhere else. Killswitch Engage get a 2nd top 10 hit at a new high for them of #5, while it's a first time in the top 10 for worship group Bethel Music. Next week we may have another local debut at #1 courtesy of Violent Soho, with high debuts also from Gwen Stefani & Iggy Pop.

Wow at that Disturbed track, #13 on Australian iTunes and currently #28 here. Crazy to think they're that high anywhere in 2016.

I had a glimmer of hope last week as "Faded" was briefly #1 on iTunes, but perhaps due to the long weekend, and "Faded" not being quite as prominent on the iTunes frontpage, that's been rather dashed. Fifth Harmony continue to improve with their career best peak, "Work From Home" is now up to #3, though looks to struggle getting higher. Possibly thanks to an iTunes push, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis get their 5th top 10 with "Dance Off". It looks to be their first top 10 hit that doesn't peak at #1 though, because the top 10 is super competitive at the moment. Expect to possibly see Mike Posner maybe Meghan Trainor in next week, and maybe Sia can ride her international success to a higher peak as well. There's a bit more of interest in the bottom half of the chart this week. Last week I mentioned Matt Corby's Idol turned alt success, this week we have a belated parallel as we at last have a contestant from The Voice to catch favour independent of that setting. Celia Pavey did very well in the 2nd season, and as such has 7 top 50 hits (nearly all covers) to her name. Under her moniker Vera Blue, she has belatedly shot into the chart thanks to a very well received performance on triple j radio last week. Below her, we have Blonde finally getting an entry to their name, and Craig David getting his 2nd top 100 hit this year in the process. Shakira is back in the chart for the first time since 2014, and The Temper Trap are back for the first time since 2012. Just in time for Easter, we have an iconic Hillsong Worship entry too *.*

While we've been stuck with the same #1 single for the past 6 weeks, we've had a different #1 album each of those weeks. For all but 1 of those weeks, it's essentially been local #1 albums too. The latest one comes from Brisbane's Violent Soho, a band for whom this success has been a long time coming. Their first two albums didn't chart at all, but they had a big boost of profile with their 3rd album "Hungry Ghost" which managed to debut at #6. It dropped out of the top 40 the next week, but netted several popular singles to help make it a steady seller, eventually going gold. So it comes as no surprise that their new album goes straight to #1. The next highest debut this week is from Gwen Stefani, who despite relatively minor single success lately, debuts higher than she ever has before in her career at #6. Right behind her, Iggy Pop has the first top 10 album of his career. Next week you can be almost certain that Zayn will debut at #1.

It just so happened that April 1st coincided with a lot of silly things happening on iTunes. Mostly the case where for about 12 hours, "7 Years" couldn't be purchased as the single & album version were made album only. I'd like to say that means we'll finally have a new #1 next week but the momentum this morning seems to think differently. If the chart were still running on sales alone though, we may have a very unlikely new #1 as Disturbed are currently ahead of the pack on iTunes, but not even top 100 on Spotify. Despite the big UK success, Mike Posner doesn't seem to be in contention, but this week he does get his 2nd top 5 hit after "Cooler Than Me" peaked at #4. Sia also seems to have fluked a new peak for "Cheap Thrills" at #6. A potential #1 hit (it's already #4 on iTunes) from gnash debuts at #26, and despite their previous singles not having taken off (yet), Hailee Steinfeld & DNCE crack the top 40 this week thanks to iTunes advertising mostly. Most of note in the bottom half this week is that John Legend re-enters and thus takes over from "Thinking Out Loud" as the oldest song in the chart, perhaps making him a saviour of sorts.

As could be expected, Zayn has the new #1 album this week. What's perhaps most interesting about that is that due to the unsuccessful bid of releasing the same week as Justin Bieber, Zayn's likely much lower selling album gets higher than "Made In The A.M." ever did. Since they're at 1 each on the singles chart, Zayn now has more #1s than his former bandmates. After getting an unlucky #11 last time out, Asking Alexandria are in at an all new high of #4 with their latest album. On the other hand, Birdy gets her 3rd straight top 10 album, but unlike the UK, she's actually been getting progressively lower peaks, as "Birdy" peaked at #1, "Fire Within" peaked at #5, and now "Beautiful Lies" debuts at #10. Those two debuts are the only albums in the top 10 this week that haven't peaked at #1. Since they've had months of pre-orders, you can probably expect Lukas Graham to be #1 on both charts next week and make it very difficult for me to say nice things.

Alan Walker being held at #2 for so many weeks behind Lukas Graham is so frustrating -_-

gnash getting into the top 40 :o  would love that to be a future smash in the UK also.

Lol at that 'The Sound Of Silence' cover being a hit in Aus. Not often you get metal bands in the singles chart.

This has smashed down under, all it needs is a push to cross over :( The boat is practically on the water, it just needs a push :(

"Secret Love Song" sold more this week than ever and it goes down 4 spots?

it's very unlikely this will crossover, Hilltop Hoods have only ever done well in Australia, even the song they did with Sia when she was getting popular again only charted in Aus and NZ.

Graham Norton aired here on Friday so it'll impact next week's chart. Could possibly outpeak Love Me Like You

If I were to make a rough guess based on their chart runs, I'd say Get Weird is on about 25,000, Love Me Like You possibly around 25,000, and Secret Love Song around 20,000.

I have no words. We should FINALLY see some change up top next week though. As expected, Gnash has bolted towards the top and looks likely to take over next week. He was actually already #1 on the digital tracks chart this week, but his streaming was taking a while to get there (and may well have not been counted). Disturbed are #1 on iTunes again but their streaming is even worse. Either way, "7 Years" can't rely on streaming to save it anymore as it's taken an unexpected plunge from #1 to #5 in a few days on Spotify. Aside from all that, The Chainsmokers now have a 3rd top 10 hit through "Don't Let Me Down". Little Mix do manage to match the peak of their previous single, but they're showing good stability in the top 20 on iTunes so maybe there's a chance to move up again. New Zealand duo Broods get their first top 50 single after their debut hit "Bridges" unluckily peaked at #51, and Canberra trio SAFIA also have a first top 50 hit (excluding the assist on Peking Duk's top 5 smash "Take Me Over"). Something that's important to note is that the ARIA Charts are quite unlike any other chart I follow, because all tracks have to be approved by the label to chart, which is simple enough but it so often doesn't happen that you can never feel guaranteed that a song will chart. The most notable case of that recently has been Drake & Future's "Jumpman", which has been top 100 on Spotify since its release over 6 months ago. Only now thanks to the Taylor Swift commercial has it gained enough sales traction to convince someone to acknowledge it, and so only now does it debut. But just to show things aren't getting any better, we can now add Kanye West's "Famous" to the list of missing songs, as it's top 30 on streaming and would probably be around #60 if it were allowed on the chart.

I shudder at the album chart, but it does bring the wonderful news of BABYMETAL debuting in the top 10, I can't think of any other Japanese act that have had anything close to this level of success. A little lower down, The Last Shadow Puppets get a top 10 album after their first album weirdly only hit #30 considering how big Arctic Monkeys were at the time. The success of "The Sound Of Silence" means we have the odd case of a Disturbed album returning to the top 10 half a year after debuting there (at #1). Though not quite in the top 10, the Pet Shop Boys' new album makes #12 which is their highest chart position in 20 years. Weezer also have their highest position since the last time they put out a self-titled album in 2008. And for fans of incongruous stats across time frames that really can't be compared, if you were to say assign linear point values to the top 50 chart positions and treat it as gospel, then for the first time this century, we have a new leader on display. Here's a handy guide, and in short, when that link is updated, Adele will have taken the top spot from Shania Twain. Oh, and next week's album chart I'm convinced will have the lowest sales for #1 of all time, as we see the hotly contested battle between The Lumineers and Deftones.

What with all of this, it seems like the Australian charts are currently a similar but better version of the UK charts. Disturbed top 5 is quite a wonderful chart anomaly.

Lukas Graham AREN'T #1 for some reason, and thus I can return to normal. Instead this week we have US DJ and vocalist Gnash, presumably because it sounds exactly like the sort of song Australia would put at #1. The top 10 this week was a bit of a mess with rather close sales, and somehow against expectations, "Faded" is #2 for a 5th week in a row. The new UK #1 "One Dance" bolts up rather quickly into the top 15 this week, but may struggle to go higher as it's not seeming to win over listeners so easily here for some reason. For the Little Mix fans reading, "Secret Love Song" gets another new peak and thus surpasses "Love Me Like You". It also finally cracked the top 50 on Spotify so maybe top 20 isn't out of the question. Through working together, Nick Jonas & Tove Lo at last get their 2nd top 50 entries. As a final amusing side point on the singles chart, over the last 2 months, A LOT of people have been struggling to identify that 'once I was 7 years old' song on the radio. Back around 2010-2012, we'd frequently see fake versions pop up in the chart (only on iTunes, they'd never be allowed onto the ARIA chart), but with the advent of Shazam (and possibly brains), they rather dramatically disappeared. So leave it to Lukas Graham to have brought about 5 different versions of songs with metadata manipulating names (my personal favourite is "Once I Was Old (Not 10, 11 or 20 but 60)") into the top 100. The latest one seems to be by a legitimate musician but it's hard not to be suspicious of it being a cover that doesn't even get the title correct. Anyway, amazingly this one actually made the chart!

The album chart this week was destined to be interesting if not for the best reasons. Primarily because for the first time in a while, there was no major release to prop up the #1 sales. The best we had this week were Deftones, who haven't had a top 10 album in over a decade, and The Lumineers, who despite their last album selling well, continue to struggle to get any attention outside of "Ho Hey". Possibly thanks to slightly better name recognition, The Lumineers did seem to sell better later in the week, but Deftones' far better pre-orders seemed to have secured it. It's possibly amnesty for the fact that Matchbox Twenty blocked them from #1 16 years ago. What made this all interesting though is that the record for lowest sales at #1 was set back in 2010 by Bring Me The Horizon (3600 sales) and despite a continually decreasing climate, has still never quite been matched. It's just come through though that Deftones ever so narrowly managed to keep above that mark, which is all good but now next week will probably be even lower. PJ Harvey might be #1 but then there's no reason Adele couldn't get there by default either. Other debuts of note this week though are Ben Harper narrowly missing out on getting an 8th top 10, while M83 take a decent jump to new chart heights of #12 with their latest. Also for the first time ever, Sam Smith's "In The Lonely Hour" is out of the top 50!

Random question but why is the below being styled like this? I noticed it on the ARIA website and it's really bothering me!

Hailee Steinfeld Feat. DNCE - Haiz EP Feat. Rock Bottom

  • Author

ARIA have a tendency to treat EPs in the most inconsistent ways. Singles often get put together with EPs presumably with the knowledge that it boosts sales just a little bit, but ARIA also like to make it clear what the main song on each top 50 entry is, and so sometimes they credit them like that. Another example is that "Royals" technically never charted, instead "The Love Club EP feat. Royals" did. What's especially silly about Hailee though is that they've gone one further and actually combined its chart run with "Love Myself" which peaked at about #80 with 4 weeks in. The week Hailee made the top 50, the digital tracks chart said it was Hailee Steinfeld feat. DNCE - Love Myself

Probably the worst handling was last year when producer Golden Features had a minor hit with "No One", but his EP came out and sold well, and rather than combining the two (which would have made it jump into the top 40 perhaps), the single & EP were charting separately and neither cracked the top 50.

They do silly things and I just roll with it :P
