What is interesting in singles charts now is that a lot of the singles in the Top 50 has been certified something (very impressive as the sales/streams ratios are higher than UK, Italy, France and NZ). I don't think ARIA will raise their singles threshold like NZ did for now, but it might be possible within the next year.

It's interesting because it's a matter of whether the problem is that there are too many certifications on the chart or too many outright. Because if you look back at the chart 3 years ago, there are slightly less certified singles in the top 50, but that's back when you had the #1 single selling 35,000-45,000 a week. Obviously the current effect is due to streaming keeping out non-hits from the top 50. If anything I hope they consider lowering the requirement for albums, because platinum is barely within reach in this climate.

There was a bit of a battle this week. "Cold Water" was #1 on streaming but only #3 digitally. Meanwhile DJ Snake's new entry was #1 on sales but only #4 on streaming. Despite being respectable combined positions, it wasn't enough this week and instead it was The Chainsmokers who were #2 digital and #2 streaming that take it, much to my chagrin. Also just like with the start of "Cold Water"'s reign, "Closer" now comes packed with an iTunes discount and front page promotion, as if they weren't sure it would be #1 this week, so it will almost certainly be #1 next week. Elsewhere, twenty one pilots & Jonas Blue get their 2nd top 10 hits this week, with the former being one of many big movers from the Suicide Squad soundtrack. Also of note there is the mega-collab "Sucker For Pain", which interestingly enough gives Lil Wayne his first ever top 20 hit as a lead artist, or as much of a lead artist you can be on a song like this. Similar dividends for "Purple Lamborghini" which gives Rick Ross his first top 50 entry. We at last lose "7 Years" from the top 50, which I suspect is still the highest selling song of the year, though "One Dance" is gradually catching up.

On the album chart, we have the Suicide Squad soundtrack at #1, which is perhaps fitting considering about half of the tracklisting is on the singles chart this week. It's the first film soundtrack to go to #1 since "Fifty Shades Of Grey" early last year. In doing so, it keeps Bernard Fanning to a peak of #2, which is the first time he's missed the #1 spot in quite a long time. Anyone in Australia would recognise him as the lead singer of Powderfinger, a band who despite being virtually unknown elsewhere in the world, were absolutely massive during the '90s & '00s here. To put that into perspective, in the last 25 years, I believe only P!nk & Celine Dion have sold more albums than them, and they also lay claim to 5 #1 albums, while Bernard himself also hit #1 with his first two solo albums. Also debuting in the top 10 this week we have local singer Montaigne with her debut album, we have relative veterans Skillet who are only just hitting the top 50 for the first time, we have Elvis Presley who is hitting the top 10 for the 22nd time, and DJ Snake just sneaking in with his first album. Next week will very likely see metalcore stalwarts The Amity Affliction picking up their 3rd #1 album.

I am doing this slightly earlier than usual because I've more free time right now. For a 2nd week we see "Closer" at #1. It's now #1 on sales and streaming, the former being bolstered by a $1.19 discount and top promotion on the front page, so it's likely the biggest sales week we've had in months. That will also continue next week as both those boosters remain in place so far anyway. DJ Snake is way behind but gets to #2; after "Where Are U Now" became Justin Bieber's equal highest charter a year ago, it's now no longer in his top 5. Being on an ad does very handy things for Betty Who as she enters the top 50 and top 10 for the first time ever, with her cover of "I Love You Always Forever". The original peaked at #2, being blocked by all-conquering "Macarena" and "Wannabe". It's enough to push "One Dance" out of the top 10 after 17 weeks in the top 10, which is the most this year, though it does pick up quadruple platinum status, indicating that it is perhaps only about 30K behind "7 Years", and may reach quintuple platinum first. After constant feature relegation, Tove Lo finally gets her 2nd lead artist top 50 entry this week, as does Martin Garrix, who hasn't been in the top 50 since "Animals". Similar case for DNCE who are possibly helped by a recent tour so it remains to be seen if "Toothbrush" can stick around. The real drought recovery this week though is Green Day, who missed the singles chart with all 3 of their 2012 albums, so this week are charting for the first time since "21 Guns" back in 2009.

Though described as obscure in Suedehead's UK Chart commentary this week, in their own country, The Amity Affliction are anything but. Their pairing of clean & unclean vocals has proven quite popular over the last decade here, so much so that they've also never changed the formula. After a slight surprise in blocking The xx from #1 in 2012, the top spot has been a given for them ever since, so "This Could Be Heartbreak" gives them a 3rd consecutive #1 album. The list of artists with 3 #1 albums this decade is an eclectic bunch that also includes P!nk, Justin Bieber, Michael Buble, Taylor Swift, One Direction, Hilltop Hoods, Keith Urban and Bring Me The Horizon. A relatively quiet week has the only other notably high debut from Drake co-signee PARTYNEXTDOOR at #13. I also want to note that children's TV program Play School has two albums climbing, as do The Wiggles. Assuming Frank Ocean doesn't release a proper album, next week may be a bit quiet so Suicide Squad could return to #1, unless it's stopped by new albums from local rapper Drapht, or country legend Dolly Parton.

Man, the original I Love You Always Forever got blocked by Macarena in the US as well!!! Crazy that it's been 20 years since the debut of Wannabe. I heard the Betty Who's version and I'm not a fan. Glad to see Cool Girl entering the Top 50. The newly released video this week should help the song climb higher, mainly by the audio streaming boost. Plus, it's continuously doing well on Spotify.

Yeah I'm not into the cover either. Her voice feels far too processed and takes away a lot of the charm in the song. Best I can say is at least it isn't tropical house.

Top 5 singles this week is a stalemate. "Closer" is #1 by a mile, last week I believe it recorded the biggest weekly total of the year so far, and I expect something similar for this chart. Things will dial back next week as it's full price on iTunes and not quite as visible on Top Tracks, but it's also recording record breaking streams so again, easy #1. "Sucker For Pain" hits the top 10 which is Lil Wayne's first time as lead artist, Imagine Dragons' 3rd time and Wiz Khalifa's 4th. All 4 of Wiz Khalifa's are from movie soundtracks as it turns out. Calum Scott's wave of terror hits Australia with rapid impact as he's currently #8 combined on iTunes, and still on the way up, this week he just sneaks into the top 50, something Robyn sadly hasn't done this century.

As it turned out, Frank Ocean did release a proper album last week, so unsurprisingly he debuts at #1. His previous album "Channel ORANGE" was a consistent seller since release, but only snuck into the top 10 at #9 for one week when iTunes had it as their album of the week. He's followed by some local debuts, firstly Ball Park Music with their 4th album in at #3. Their previous album peaked at #2 missing the top spot by about 50 copies. Right behind them is local rapper Drapht whose previous album peaked at #1, making him the first and still only (presumably until Illy's comes out) Australian solo rapper to have a #1 album. He hasn't had as much of a hit this time around and comes in at #4. Roy & HG's long running radio program "This Sporting Life" had a highlights package album out this week potentially for Father's Day around the corner so it may have some longevity, but for now is #6. Dolly Parton also returns to the top 10 2 years after "Blue Smoke" saw her at #7, this time slightly lower at #9. Next week there's a plethora of diverse debuts but I'm not sure who has #1 in their sights. Frank Ocean is still #1 on iTunes but with no physical it could go elsewhere. Potentially we'll see Britney Spears, Florida Georgia Line, Barbra Streisand, Glass Animals, Troy Cassar-Daley & Twelve Foot Ninja in the top 10.

"Closer" is easily #1 yet again, with the VMAs providing an additional boost to keep its very high sales afloat. Hard to see this changing next week as it refuses to budge and is still climbing on streaming. To note, Martin Garrix gets his first ever top 10 with "In The Name Of Love", which was helped by being top of iTunes Top Tracks last week so this may be its peak. Calum Scott also reaches the top 10 which is something Robyn sadly has never done. Passenger feels the crunch of streaming as "Anywhere"'s #23 digital placing is not enough to crack the top 50. Meanwhile Rihanna's "Needed Me" has been in the top 60 for many months despite never getting that high digitally. It's at a new peak of #46 thanks to the VMAs too.

Barbra Streisand's "Encore" is her 3rd #1 album ever, and second this decade after 2014's "Partners". That album blocked alt-J from #1 but this one has done no such thing as this week's #2 has already hit #1. There are 4 other top 10 debuts back to back after this. Firstly Britney Spears' return to the top 10 after the underperformance of "Britney Jean". Unlike in the UK, Britney has had a #1 album before just once with "Femme Fetale" in 2011, incidentally blocking Radiohead who assume the role here of having so many #2 albums. Local country artist Troy Cassar-Daley lands at #5 to give him his 4th top 10 album, all of which have been this decade despite the fact that he has been charting since the '90s. Local metal band Twelve Foot Ninja have their first ever top 50 album this week, all the way up at #6 even. Lastly there's US country duo Florida Georgia Line who reach a new chart height of #7 after their previous best of #20 with their last album. Also to note is Glass Animals who are unlucky to be caught out in a competitive week. Despite being from the UK, they are arguably more popular in Australia, where their first album peaked at #12, and now their new album goes just slightly better with a #11 debut. Next week we will see if A Day To Remember can grab their first ever #1 as they lead on iTunes currently.

I often feel like Robyn was really robbed of a hit with Dancing on My Own. I really loved her Body Talk era and was such a shame that it was overlooked commercially in Australia. Do It Again (with Royksopp) is another example of this. I don't even like the Calum Scott version to begin with. VMA really did help Chainsmokers here and I agree that it will stay there a bit longer. They are at the top convincingly with both sales and streams. Nice to see Britney charting high with her album. She wasn't even that close to beating Barbra in sales though.

I also heard that Take 40 had their last ever show this week, after 32 years on air. Truly an end of an era. Although I have to admit, I only listened to it a few times.

I can't say I'm sad to hear that Take 40 is ending though, it's literally the Australian equivalent of the Vodaphone Big Top 40 or the American Ryan Secrest Top 40, i.e. a fake chart.

I think that's Fresh 40 on the rival network, Nova. Take 40 is like the Radio 1 Chart Show. American Top 40 is a horrible chart show though.

oh right, it's been so long since I was in Australia last I just forgot Take 40 wasn't a made up chart.

Take40 used to be a combination of sales + radio airplay but I think around the early 2010s they swapped over to broadcasting the ARIA Chart, and often it's the first place you can find out what's going on in the chart. Have to admit that despite the meaningless of the chart (which I even was aware of at the time), I really enjoyed listening to it around 2008. Found it really tough to listen to now since they make a shambles of the lower half with random unmentioned skips and of course since it's on commercial radio it's loaded with ads that go on forever. Makes Radio 1's chart show even now look brilliant by comparison

Yes. I tried giving Take 40 a listen last year and I was really confused with which chart position and song they were playing. Not to mention, the tracks they skip over were remixed as well. They play one song after another (in shambles), rarely mentioning the chart rank. At least with Radio 1 Chart Show, they make it clear where the songs are ranked in the lower half, even if it's played for 5-10 seconds.

There's no stopping "Closer" at this point. Still dominating iTunes and Spotify, and not even Lady Gaga or Sia were able to dethrone it even briefly. Speaking of Sia, she is able to debut at #25 off the back of mostly just sales. Next week "The Greatest" is a good chance of entering the top 10. Entering the top 10 this week is Ariana Grande & Hailee Steinfeld. For the latter this is a first, for the former, it's her 5th, and highest charter since "Bang Bang" 2 years ago. The Black Eyed Peas' new version of "Where Is The Love" enters at #15, an interesting thing to note is that from 2003 to 2011, The Black Eyed Peas had what I believe is a record breaking 15 consecutive top 10 singles, before coming to an end with "Don't Stop The Party" peaking at #16. The original version also makes a re-entry. Zara Larsson & Passenger both get their 4th top 50 hits this week, while Cheat Codes get their 2nd. Cheat Codes would probably have entered previously, but for some reason the Hot Hits Australia playlist on Spotify still hasn't swapped "Sex" out for it, which is keeping the wrong Cheat Codes song in the top 50 on Spotify. Also for those whom it may concern, Lady Gaga will perhaps have a top 20 debut next week with "Perfect Illusion", but I can't see it going top 10 at this rate.

New #1 album this week comes from US rockers A Day To Remember. It's a big increase in fortunes for them as they previously have only gotten as high as #13. Father's Day lingers on slightly further on this week's chart so expect a big re-shuffle next week. The next highest debut comes from local indie band Big Scary whose 3rd album gets them their first top 10 peaker, after their first two albums peaked in the 30s. Travis Scott also reaches the top 10 for the first time about a year after debuting at #30 with "Rodeo". Next week we could see a battle for the top between two very different local artists, electronic trio SAFIA with their debut album, and veterans Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds with their 16th album.

"Closer" powers on. It's taking sizeable declines on Spotify but seems locked in place on iTunes and thus isn't going anywhere. Sia moves up to #2 with "The Greatest" which thus ties "Chandelier" as her highest lead artist peak, only behind the bafflingly long running #1 "Wild Ones" back in 2012. Otherwise it's a generally slow week with only Lady Gaga debuting in the top 50. She has not reached the top 10 since "The Edge Of Glory" back in 2011, which is partly because "Applause" was released midweek and could only peak at #11 (for 2 weeks). "Perfect Illusion" in a way matches that as it does reach #11 on digital sales, but streaming holds it back a little. I'm not sure we can expect much more next week either. There's Calvin Harris who is off to a slower start than in the US/UK, but should debut around #20 perhaps, and maybe twenty one pilots can sneak in with their MCR cover.

There's much more to see on the album chart which is loaded with debuts. Taking out prime position is Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds with likely the saddest #1 of the year that isn't "Blackstar". Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have regularly charted in the top 10 for the past 2 decades, only reaching the top spot for the first time with their previous album in 2013, so it's their second time at #1 now. Also by reaching #1, it makes 2016 the year with the most Australian #1 albums ever I believe. And they didn't even need to release an album to do that because another local artist in SAFIA have got the runner up slot, this time with their debut album which comes after about 3 years of singles dripfeeded out (though the first 2 years of those did not appear on the album). We have Dolly Parton & company at #3 just a few weeks after she was in the top 10 last month. US country artist Jason Aldean lands in the top 5 which is his highest position to date, and I believe the same can be said of Bastille's #7 debut but the site I use to check this is currently down. At #8 we have a re-entry for a very old Beatles live album, and lastly the top 10 is also graced for the first time by the Devin Townsend Project. Next week's release schedule is so dry that I don't know what to expect at #1, Usher? Anthony Callea? Suicide Squad? Suppose we'll find out next week.

GaGa fared better in Australia than I thought. A #14 entry is good but I think it will drop. Just by a few places maybe. It's a much better placing than NZ, where it debuted at #31. Glad to see Sia reach #2 and Side to Side is performing above what I expected internationally. I see Ellie dropped one place, despite Bridget Jones' Baby having an advanced screening last week. It will definitely improve next week though, with the film being released nationally. Zara is skyrocketing both in Australia and NZ, which is great to see. Good retention for Anne-Marie as well. Not surprised really as V Hits still plays her video quite a lot. I wish Cool Girl placed higher.

At the moment she's probably looking at dropping to around #38 :( But if I recall correctly, the video is out this week which could stabilise it.

I would've expected Gaga to do better in Australia than the UK, especially as she became famous there before anywhere else. :o

I'm actually not surprised, because her Artpop singles did quite poorly in Australia (Applause peaked at #11, Do What U Want #21) so they seem a little more "over" her compared to other countries.
