BJSC 153: Myst Milano - No Shade

 

Originally released in 2021 before being picked up by the legendary house label Defected last year we introduce Myst Milano to BJSC with "No Shade". The song is a throwback to 90s hip-house inspired by the ballroom community in Toronto. It has quite possibly the catchiest hook in a song we've sent in years so here's hoping that translates into some points.

 

 

I had a hard time picking which version to send as the Catz n Dogz version is also a heater, so go check that out too if you enjoy a bit of tech house, though ultimately I feel the original stands out a bit more.

BJSC 154: Andromida - Paradox

 

Andromida is the instrumental progressive metal project of Ramon Gutierrez - based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Originally sent by him to a contest to be a part of the Cyberpunk 2077 radio station, the song didn't manage to win a spot but perhaps better luck will come in BJSC. It is a big energy banger and a bit of a sonic change for Danæviia which we certainly need at this point after the disappointing DNQ performance of our last entry.

BJSC 155: Sub Sub (feat. Gill Jackson) - Southern Trees

 

Sub Sub were an electronic and dance group from Cheshire who were active between 1991-96. Their sole album 'Full Fathom Five' was released in 1994 from which this was taken as the 5th and last single release. 'Southern Trees' is a great downtempo/trip hop track which we hope will bring us back to the BJSC finals this month. Lyrically, a tasteful reinterpretation of 'Strange Fruit', a song first recorded by Billie Holiday in 1939 in protest against the lynching of Black Americans at the time. The song also samples the string section of the legendary 'Purple Rain' as performed by Prince. The group managed one hit single 'Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)', #3 in 1993. After a fire destroyed their recording studio they retired the Sub Sub project, rebranding as indie band Doves who had greater commercial success. The song was used in the 2020 Netflix series White Lines, so if you have watched that (I haven't) you may recognise this already. The unofficial animation video is provided by TheFelixProject.

 

 

and as an unfortunate coincidence we say RIP today to Tina Turner who represented Danæviia in BJSC 148 as the voice of Altrice 'Places Faces' (sampled from 'Private Dancer')

Listened blind to this and was surprised to see it was a Sub Sub song, it's amazing how diverse their output was that they could go from a disco track like Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use), to the trip hop of this and the indie of Doves.

 

Anyway, great entry and I hope it qualifies for you.

BJSC 156: Ram & Cari - What Matters

 

Ram is a Dutch trance DJ-producer, best known for his trance classics 'Ramsterdam' and 'Ramelia', the latter which won BJSC nine years ago. Well it's about time we brought him back as we think he's outdone himself now with 'What Matters', a truly uplifting vocal trance effort dedicated to those we love the most. The track is taken from the album 'Wanderlust', a project inspired by his trip around the world as a DJ, with each track inspired by a place on the globe, Taiwan for this entry. Cari, also from Amsterdam, who has lent her voice to many a trance tune, provides vocals. We very much hope this can finally end our DNQ streak as the song is too good not to really.

 

Another really good track, RAM is better than most at the emotive trance.

 

I'm still playing Southern Trees a lot too.

Thank you all in SF1 that Ram & Cari qualify for us, ending the run of three DNQs we had due to poor semi draws. Meaning we are still yet to DNQ 4 times in a row since that happened twice in 2012.
