The album chart would have an all-Kiwi top five if it wasn't for Elvis. The local acts all did much better than the major UK and US acts that released this past week. To be fair, they've all had diminishing returns for a while now, with Robbie's last two albums peaking at #12 and now The Heavy Entertainment Show at #17. Bon Jovi's last album reached #9 but their last Q4 release, in 2009, peaked at #20 just as their new one has this week. Alicia Keys only peaked at #22 with her last two albums while Here charts at #24 this week.

Ooh, Black Beatles could be the first one-week #1 since Pillowtalk back in February, and Starboy has the first return to #1 since Marvin Gaye and Lean On both had two non-consecutive weeks last summer. As stated above, Rockabye is now #1 on iTunes so that'll be a contender for the next new official #1.

 

Michael Buble's Christmas album starts its 4th run at #1, having previously reached it in 2011, 2012, and 2014. This is its 10th non-consecutive week. I'm expecting The Rolling Stones to overtake it next week. The Weeknd's last album peaked at #2, while he settles for #5 this time. NZ is possibly the only country where Susan Boyle has continued her streak of top 10 albums, only narrowly making it this time but this is her 7th.

It's a charity single for the Kaikoura earthquake last month! Just dropped to #2 on iTunes behind Rockabye, will be interesting to see where it'll chart with minimal streams.

 

The charity single overtake again at this moment but both songs still pretty close to each other on iTunes. But yeah next week... I mean this Friday would be pretty interesting to see where it'll debut. I suspect a top 10 debut at least due to high sales, and would be very surprised to see it debut at #1 considering a) it have such minimal streams b) The current top 10 singles have significant streams to overcome.

 

It's surprised to see Drake Fake Love never make an appearance on the top 40 despite it have significant streams on Spotify. Maybe it would debut upon his upcoming project released on this weekend.

Rockabye is now Clean Bandit's joint-biggest hit in NZ, matching the #2 peak of Rather Be. Andy Grammer has his biggest NZ hit, with Fresh Eyes surpassing the #34 peak of his only other hit, Keep Your Head Up from 2011. That Ronan Keating entry may seem entirely random but it's from a TV advert. It's his first time in the NZ top 40 since 2002 (If Tomorrow Never Comes, #3)!! And The Vamps have their fourth NZ chart entry, their first since Oh Cecilia which is their highest peaking at #13. The other two are Can We Dance and Somebody To You, which were both top 20.

 

Steve Aoki & Louis Tomlinson's song is #1 on the Heatseekers chart, so they just missed out on the top 40! And on the albums chart, J. Cole just barely outpeaks the #11 Born Sinner to become his highest-charting NZ album.

I'm really happy to see Clean Bandit have another worldwide hit under the belt after the debut single Rather Be. :dance:

 

Hopefully Clean Bandit, Anne-Marie, and Sean Paul (Surprisingly Sean Paul hasn't get any NZ chart topper song yet :o) can get their first NZ #1 next week but CB would face big competition from Bruno Mars for the next week as 24K Magic has significant lead over Rockabye on iTunes but 24K Magic have lower streaming value so it might neutralized the iTunes lead. Would be very surprised to see Starboy still managed to hold #1 next week because it currently lack behind on iiTunes and only have <5K daily play lead on Spotify.

 

I think next week top 3 singles would be Rockabye, 24K Magic, and Starboy in any order.

Great to see a new #1 song to end the year! 24K Magic is Bruno's 4th #1 here, the others being Just The Way You Are, Grenade, and Uptown Funk. That makes ten #1 songs this year, eleven if you count Love Yourself which carried over from last year. Plenty of movement this week before the presumable gift card effect kicks in next week. The year-end charts have been published so I'll probably make one more post for those, then we'll move on to a new thread for 2017 (with nicer formatting, fingers crossed)!

Observation of the year end list is that streaming is likening the charts to Billboard, where songs accumulate a large chunk of their points on the way down, meaning that the list leans very heavily to the start of the year.
