February 29, 20169 yr This is the first time I've ever seen a Best Picture winner before it won the award! However, I thought Spotlight was great but more because of the story behind it, I didn't watch it thinking 'film of the year'. It just seemed like a normal drama, not overly amazing but still pretty great.
February 29, 20169 yr I'm still shocked Spotlight won. It can only be because of the story behind it, the movie will surely go down as one of the weakest/least special Best Picture winners of recent times.
February 29, 20169 yr Ended up falling asleep and they didn't record so I missed the first two awards but here are some thoughts: Really pleased with Spotlight winning Best Picture, I wasn't expecting it to win at all after it had only picked up one another award but it was the only one of the real contenders that I really enjoyed/loved. It was definitely a more 'important' story to tell than The Revenant and some of the other nominees and it was really solid in all aspects unlike that and The Big Short. Lol at Michael Keaton screaming 'f*** yeah' too as he went up  Brie Larson was great in Room it was good to see no surprise win in that category, excited to see what future roles she gets involved with now. I was really pleased that film won at least one award too because it was my favourite of all the nominees. Jacob Tremblay was also so cute when presenting, you could tell how he actually really loved Chris Rock in Madagascar  At least Leo has finally won an Oscar, he wouldn't have been my top choice but his speech was nice and he's been deserving of one for years. Michael Fassbender is also consistantly good so hopefully he picks up one in the future. So pleased with Alicia Vikander winning, she really shone in the Danish Girl and she seems like a great talent to keep an eye on. Hopefully she'll be back there next year with another nomination (at least we'll see her present though :D) Kind of sad to see Mark Rylance win because he'd only be my 4th choice out of the nominees but he came across really well in his speech and he still did a great job. I just really wanted Mark Ruffalo to win, he's on his third nomination now though so if he keeps picking the right roles then hopefully he'll win soon. Shame about The Big Short winning for Adapted Screenplay, the four other nominees were all adapted way better (especially The Martian and Room imo) but I guess it was always going to win something so I'm happy it wasn't a really major award. I really quite like Writing's On The Wall and it was my favourite song in that category so I'm pleased it won and his speech was one of the better ones too but Lady Gaga's performance made me tear up a bit so it would have been nice for her to take that too. Also really glad Mad Max won six awards, I'd like to have seen a bit more diversity in the winners but it was a great film and deserved all of them. At least we got a surprise winner in one technical award with Ex Machina too, glad it won something and the visual effects in that seemed so real, especially impressive on such a low budget.
February 29, 20169 yr leo's speech / reaction made me wanna snatch that oscar back like i feel betrayed.
February 29, 20169 yr Most of the winners last night were so not worthy of winning, at all. I hope that people will now put the same kind of attention to someone like Amy Adams who has 5 nominations (the same amount of acting ones Leo has) but no wins, but I doubt it. Sam Smith having an Oscar makes me physically sick. Happy for the female winners though and suporting actor.
February 29, 20169 yr sam smiths speech made me GAG It was a bit embarrassing because there have been loads of gay winners before (although I'm not sure if there has been an openly gay acting winner) but it was nice for him to say something important rather than just thank everyone anyway despite it running along the bottom of the screen. February 29, 20169 yr YES for Spotlight, was convinced The Revenant had that and the other main awards all went exactly as expected so it was nice for them to throw that on us. I think the film's subtlety works in it's favour, it doesn't dramatise the subject matter or the story too much, it's very clearly exactly as it happened and there's not a lot that the characters do that you wouldn't expect them to do in a real life situation. For a thriller to do that is quite unique, so I think it's worthy of that award. More so than The Revenant definitely, the awards it won were deserved, but as a film and method of storytelling itself, it was very flawed. Glad for Brie helping Room win something and very glad for Mark Rylance, he was one of the best points of that film, and ofc. glad for Leo (haven't seen this speech tho which sounds...interesting, #oscarssopolitical seems very apt for this ceremony). Most other winners were expected and deserved, apart from Sam Smith - I didn't see his performance/speech but as a song, it is terrible and has nothing going for it as a Bond theme (and would be way more widely reviled if it wasn't for who's singing it), I'm stunned that that is deemed worthy of an Oscar and that there really was nothing better that challenged it. Although pretty much everyone seems disappointed going by the reaction, could this be the start of Sam Smith backlash? :D I was glad I stayed up for that, seemed a quite distinct and really watchable ceremony this year! February 29, 20169 yr It was a bit embarrassing because there have been loads of gay winners before (although I'm not sure if there has been an openly gay acting winner) but it was nice for him to say something important rather than just thank everyone anyway despite it running along the bottom of the screen. He's not in the acting cacatgory so that's irrelevant to him. He took something Ian Mckellen said about there being 'no opening gay Oscar actor winners', but outside the category there have been quite a few, so Smith really embarrassed himself there.
February 29, 20169 yr I hope that people will now put the same kind of attention to someone like Amy Adams who has 5 nominations (the same amount of acting ones Leo has) but no wins, but I doubt it. Well I think some of the attention was due to the length of time he's been waiting (first nominated in 1993) and not just amount of nominations. But I did get fed up of all the buzz around him (his performance is the best thing going for the film imo, but I much preferred Eddie in The Danish Girl) and I hope everyone votes and wins based on pure merit, and not just because he's """overdue""" or whatever s***.
February 29, 20169 yr Author I really think (and so hope) that attention for the next overdue Oscar is going to go to Amy Adams when she has another role with Awards buzz
February 29, 20169 yr I'm not sure I like the idea of being 'overdue' an Oscar anyway. Amy has been very, very good in a lot of films, but assuming she's nominated again in the next few years (which she almost certainly will be) then I don't want her to win because people feel it's ''the right time''. It's a bit like Meryl winning for The Iron Lady when The Devil Wears Prada was vastly superior.
February 29, 20169 yr He's not in the acting cacatgory so that's irrelevant to him. He took something Ian Mckellen said about there being 'no opening gay Oscar actor winners', but outside the category there have been quite a few, so Smith really embarrassed himself there. Yeah, it was a bit embarrassing in that aspect, he was then told he wasn't the first and then said something along the lines of two is my lucky number anyway which is even more embarrassing but as I said, at least he said something worthwhile. It's not hard to miss the word actor in what McKellen said too although he really should have fact-checked before saying something like that. I just think he's getting a bit of a hard time from haters when he clearly tried to say something positive even though it ended up looking bad/backfired  Dustin Lance Black (Oscar winner and openly gay Tom Daley's boyfriend) was pretty hilarious with this though  Edited February 29, 20169 yr by •Josh•
February 29, 20169 yr Amy had almost all hers in a 5 year period which I find a but more impressive. Yeah, Amy Adams should really win one, she's so talented. Pretty sure Jennifer Lawrence is coming for that weave though, she only needs one more Oscar nomination by 2019 to match that feat! :o
February 29, 20169 yr Amy deserved to win for Junebug, The Fighter, Doubt (not even nominated for that though) and American Hustle IMO. Not so much The Master. Can we discuss how friggin phenomenal Jen Garner looked though? http://49.media.tumblr.com/f69c06c2d91cc35c3a1651fbd04a62b7/tumblr_o3b0kssDLI1ume96jo2_500.gif
February 29, 20169 yr Not the Fighter, that wasn't worth a nomination, neither was the Master. I totally agree on Junebug and Doubt though. And also think 'Her' was one of her very best performances, and that didn't get a nomination. American Hustle was a strong one but the entire movie annoyed me so I don't hold it amongst her greats.
February 29, 20169 yr Are you kidding about The Fighter?!!? She was the best bit about that movie, it was probably the most un-Amy character ever and she owned every inch of it.
