As I've said before, Madonna's longevity is due to her skills as a business woman. Shakira has proved she is just as shrewd a business woman as Madonna with Hips Don't Lie. It may be a sell out but it has given her decent album sales and the biggest pop song in history. Expect her to be around a while especially as she has shown repeated consistency with the quality of her albums.

Lol, and who cares about this list? So Shakira has a bazillion points with Hips Don´t Lie, and a few more songs, and what acurancy does it has? If you look at their site, it´s nothing official, and even fans votes are counted into the chart. Plus, if Hips Don´t Lie was all of that this album would have sold millions... The reason it spent so long in the charts and sold so many singles and downloads is because most people didn´t think it was worth buyng the album. In the USA, the re-issued version of the album has not even sold 1 million copies, with is something to be ashamed for an album that features "the biggest hit of the century", lol (Total album sales are just under 1.5 million there but it counts more then 500k which where sold of the original version). SO, after all this, her album sold around 3 million copies worldwide... what a big deal. I bet James Blunt will be pissed off and trade his 11 million copies of Back To Bedlam sold for the glory of being # 1 on mediatraffic song´s chart, lol. Hips was a novelty just like Asereje.

 

Less then 300,000 copies sold in UK

Less then 1,5 million sold in USA

 

Pretty pathetic for an album that features such a huge hit and was release in 2 different versions.

I don't think Madonna fans 'attack' everyone, Shakira beat loads of other people according to that chart but Madonna was the only one mentioned, that is bound to annoy some people as you've said. A fan is a fan, and they will defend whoever they like, just like you have made your point here.

In other countries where Hung Up has been as big as Hips... Madonna kicked her arse a lot. Sales of COADF on 1st week alone in UK are bigger then the total for OF2. 4x platinum in Europe and going, while OF2 struggled to reach is 1st platinum with a re-release and is already leaving the chart. WHAT A KICK OF ASS.

Isn´t a commercial album? Is this just an excuse to say the tracks are not good enough to sell? If she was doing alternative music or something experimental like Kate Bush then you could say it´s not commercial, but she is doing generical pop/rock, just isn´t good enough to sell by the loads... They had to re-release it to include a proper hit, and if you look at the fact ages after that song they still haven´t released anything else from it just shows that the label KNOWS nothing else from this album has the potential to be a hit. Plus, COADF is even less commercial if you consider USA don´t buy dance music. It´s a proper dance album and sold more then OF2, can´t remember any other dance album selling more then a million there recently...

yes, but Madonna is more established in the UK and America, and has previously sold more than shakira, and probably had a bigger global impact than shakira.

 

that doesnt mean OF is a flop, just because it hasnt sold obscene amounts of units doesnt mean its a bad album, im sure the majority of people who have OF2 agree it isnt a commercial album, but as a shakira fan I am very pleased with it's success, you cant expect an album to sell well every time.

Well, in a topic which title is about an artist kicking the other artists arse chartwise you say you don´t care which one sold more? It doesn´t matter if you care or not, the message wasn´t even directed to you. Obviously Shakira fans are desperate to highlight her name from insignificant statistics like this, because they don´t have anything great to note from her recent album sales.

I wouldnt call the majority of the album commercial at all, although musically in places it may be, the lyrics to the songs of HDYD, Timor, Animal City, CMTC certainly arent commercial, while songs like something and TDATT arent too radio friendly [the rest of the songs id say are commercial]

 

Madonna saw a gap in the market and took advantage of it: it's pure euro dance which is why it sold well in europe. I think the sales in America are underwhelming, and probably came from fanbase and the fact that its madonna, which is why 5-7 million of its sales are from europe, while 1.5 are from the US

Shakira fans arent desperate! :rolleyes: sure Madonna's latest album has sold more than OF2, but Madonnas comeback single wasnt as successful as HDL, and i wouldn't say having the fastest selling digital song/most played song in history 'minor statistics'

 

and explain to me how 4 million for OF2 and 5 million for FO1 aret great? thats more than most female albums sell, and definately more than the latin females

OF2 has't sold massive amounts because it was re released. If HDL was the first single the album would have sold masses but it was slyly re released. It is an uncomericial album - not because it's experimental but because none of the songs are radio friendly enough for singles. There's plenty of great songs on there.

Yeah it has sold 4 million and of1 5 million and how can you expect and album to sell great in the uk when shakira doesnt do much promo in the uk? or when radio don't playlist her?
