but..err.. this 'century'... we're only SIX years into this bloody century

Don't insult us Latins, we have better taste than that!

hehe... I know... I'm married to one. ;)

But it's a fact that an artist can sell humungous amounts of records in the Latin countries...and be virtually unknown outside of them.

Ricky Martin is one that (briefly) crossed over and sold to the masses... but the Latin stars never last more than a few years outside their main audiences. The same thing that happened to Ricky will happen to Shakira - she won't, under any circumstances, have a long career outside Brazil and the rest of South America, Mexico, Portugal or Spain.

 yeah right...

I think she has already proven that she will stay...

2001-2002 big hits (Whenever, Wherever, Underneath Your Clothes)

2005-2006 big hits (La Tortura, Hips Don't Lie)

But anyway... This thread should not be here... This is gonna turn into a westlife/robbie kind of thread... If you hate Shakira, that's ok... But I'm pretty sure Shakira has already shown that she will have a long career full of sales and awards

the title is a bit graphic non?

I agree with Ashley, with some of the threads youve started it makes it look like shakira fans are rather arrogant and it pisses off some people on here.

All Ill say is all that need to be said, 16 years after she started and 42 million sales later she's still going strong, and stronger than ever before ^_^ that should prove she isnt just some flash in the pan, she's one of the [if not the biggest] latin female of our generation, mabye even ever [along with Gloria Estefan] you dont see Thalia or Paulina Rubio doibng the kind of things shakira does. Why? Because she's probably one of the most flexible artist out there, able to change her styles like a chameleon, and shes obviously made a conenction with people that only a handful of artists ever get to do

this is so gonna turn into a abd thread, i can sense it

...yeah.. I AM right... thankyou for that - and time will tell. She's been around 5 years - nothing.... NOTHING in comparison to the artists the rather stupid thread-starter compared her to. Ricky Martin was around for far more than 5 years and had equal success.

Where's he now, eh?

Shakira doesn't deserve to breathe the same air as Madonna, and only someone who doesn't know a thing about pop music would say she does. I think that means you.

5 years?!? haha I don't think so, try 16 years, Im sure thats a pretty long time in the industry?

this is why I hate these type of threads, people talk about shakira as if shes some sort of noob, hardly knowing the first thing about her -_- im not picking out anyone in particular, but all im saying is that if you dont like shakira, at least acknowledge that shes been going for a long time, and achieved more than most artists would in there lifetimes, and if that doesnt put her up with the elite, then theres no pleasing.

But she's only been known outside of the Latin countries for 5 years...

EXACTLY..and the exact point I was making.

Christ, Bjork was making records when she was 12.... does that mean we count her as having over 25 years in the business?

Of course not!

Most artists have been 'going' for YEARS before they get a contract or hit the big time.

Shakira - 5 years it is, then -_-

Shakira has actually been around for quite a while, she just hasnt been round england for ages.

and oral fixation, you are making shakira fans look bad. And does it matter about sucess? This could be shakira's last ever hit or it could be the begining of a long career, no one knows

Then why is it at 15 on there ?
After reading this, makes me wonder if its really chart related, moving the topic to its proper destination, the Shakira forum :cheer:

well i would personally, if Bjoprk has been releasing albums since she was 12 then shes been in the business since then.

Shakira had a majuor label deal and released her first album 'Magia' in 1991, therefore 16 years.

and I dont know why anyone should care that shes only been known in non latin countries, she'd sold over 20 million before then, so i dotn see how you can call Laundry Service ehr breakthrough simply because it was big in America, the corpaorate nation of sellouts -_-

The Asian and Latin countries have loads of artists who are colossal sellers - but totally unknown outside these regions.

Shakira became known outside her territory 5 years ago.... so her international career began then, just as Bjork's international career began in the late 80s with her band Sugacubes.

yes, but still she has been releasing albums for 16 years, personally i dont know what terrotories have to do with measuring the success of artists.

As much as I hate them a great example from our own country is Westlife, huge here, but there existence is barely even known on most other countries.

Another great example is the Japanese music market, artists like Utada Hikaru and Ayumi hamasaki have sold over 50 million records in japan and neighbouring countries [Taiwan] yet are barely unhread of here. If they were to suddenly breakthrough in 2007 would people be saying that they have been going since 2007?

now we are talking about longevity and shakira will be around a very long time, she is much more credible than ricky martin he only had one big hit only one big global album

shakira is better respected she writes and produces her music and she did a rare thing which is to have a successful spanish album charting in many non spanish speaking countries FO1 was a global hit,

she is here to stay and the haters will have to get used to it cause shakira is only just getting into her stride whether you like it of not she is the strongest new female global artist to emerge this decade and she has the potential to outsell all the competition she did it in 2002 with WW, she now again has the biggest global song of 2006 with HDL

not to mention the 5 million sellign Pies Descalzos, the 8 million selling 'Donde Estan Los Ladrones' and her being the first latin artist to ever make an MTV Unplugged, all before her breakthrough into the US mainstream market

but..err.. this 'century'... we're only SIX years into this bloody century

Well its still impressive...

How can you say that she has only been around for 5 years just because that is when she started to release in the uk and when you first heard about her, she also released spanish albums in the usa before laundry service... what REALLY gets on my nerves about the people on this forum is how you think just because artists like madonna have been around for ages it makes the woman cannot even sing.. why should shakira even be compared to her when there music is different? Madge and shakira have nothing against each other or britney so why do fans have to call everybody its ****ing annoying, just shut up, 40 million sales speaks for itself.. alot of madonna's sales come from latin markets... the way that you all speak is like latine people aren't as important as usa/uk people so there sales shouldn't count and stop throwing in the YOU PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT POP MUSIC ... for gods sake .. so what you say is credible is credible? i think not.. for example cliff richard is $h!t but because he has been around for so long that makes him better than some of the new people around? i think not. Also ashley the best thing to do would be to change the title... fixation oral is trying to make everyone hate shakira on this forum.
