R.I.P. The Single

by Paul Cashmere

September 28 2006

Is the single dead in the Australian music industry? Judging by current sales figures across Australia, it would appear the answer is a resounding “Yesâ€.

The Australian chart reached an all-time low this week when the number 100 single by M.C. Lars registered just 47 sales nationally. Ironically, Lars song is titled ‘Download This Song’.

Singles sales have dropped right off in 2006 even when compared to a year ago.

The blow to the troubled music industry comes just a week after major chain Sanity announced it would no longer carry singles.

It has never been so easy to score a Top 40 hit in Australia when the only sales are considered.

The McClymonts ‘Something That My Heart Does’ is at No. 40 with registered sales from chart stores of just 354 units.

Only one song, the number one song by Sandi Thom, sold more than 5,000 units. By number 5 the figure fell to 3658 and by number 18 sales were registering less than 1000 units.

Every song past number 80 sold less than 100 units in chart stores nationally.

Album sales luckily are remaining stable. The top two albums (by Scissor Sisters and Pink) both sold more than 10,000 units. By number 10, album sales fall to around 3200 units. By No. 40, the figure falls to around 1500 and number 100 this week by Hillsong Church sold 506 units.

wow they are very bad sales!
I think the whole world will be including downloads soon
i dont get how more music is sold in the UK compared to Australia.....
we have a higher population by far. Most of their country is unpopulated

Wow-and I thought UK sales were bad at times lol...

UK has a much bigger population, and also autralian chart doesn´t count downloads, so proportionally both countries are head to head, I think. The UK charts sales would be looking pathetic if it wasn´t for downloads.

Oz has 20million people so their sales should be a third of ours (60 million people) but 5,000 is pretty low for a No.1 as in proportion to us that would be 15,000...Still if its true that they only count physicals then it is fair enough...
I recently read that U2's song "All because of you" reached #1 in Canada with physical sales of "85" copies :o

worse, so few singles are selling that the chart only contains 18 titles

and one of those songs has been on the chart for 163 weeks!

Just to clarify, that account is grossly exaggerated, those sales are only registering so low as it only consists of minor local retailers - the bigger chains such as HMV pulled out of the chart a few months ago and thus their sales are not included in this, hence why singles are still going Gold (35,000 units) and Platinum (70,000 units).

Can anyone tell me why HMV and Virgin stores are no longer counted in the ARIA chart???

Oh I heard about that a month or two ago. They had some fall out I think, so now Australia have two charts.

Someone Australian can clarfy that for me though!

As they felt a weekly chart was too dated by the time it was published and planned on having a daily chart! So ridiculous
