TIPs Sound Of The Eighties

Random Pop Promo's from the 1980s

Yes I've nicked this idea from BBC Radio2, but as they only have Sound Of The Sixities (Saturdays 08:00 - 10:00) & Sound Of The Seventies (Tuesdays 22:00 - 22:30), I thought I would borrow the idea for use in BuzzJack.

Each weekend, I intend to post seven videos by different acts from that decade, when I was a teenager & I aim to post videos that you are rarely or not likely to see on various oldie Music Cable channels.

So please feel free to pass your comments about any of the acts & videos featured & make suggestions for other classics from this decade......

PUBLIC IMAGE LIMITED - Seattle video (1987 UK#47)

Peek-a-boo, for me, is the Banshees finest moment.

Not only does it still sound incredibly modern even now, it heralded an unprecedented change of direction for a band who many people thought were a spent force at that time after the covers album they made.

The video, too, is brilliant. And so is the album this single came from, Peepshow - not a duff track in sight - a glorious record.

Pure bliss... I'm just surprised nobody's remixed this and made it a huge hit today....

This Corrosion - a masterpiece. Just brilliant. 10 minutes of heaven. Or hell if you're a true-blood Goth ;)

the Cure - this is one of my least fave Cure songs, and the video's not their best, either IMO. Same with Blasphemous Rumours.

This Corrosion - a masterpiece. Just brilliant. 10 minutes of heaven. Or hell if you're a true-blood Goth ;)

Nah, 10 minutes of hell to a true-blood Goth would be two Rasmus songs back to back....

I always liked "This Corrosion", it just gets played too often, my fave Sisters tracks tend to be much older ones..... "Alice", "Black Planet", "Walk Away", "Temple of Love" (although the 'newer' version with Ofra Haza was astounding......).. "Dominion" and "Flood" are fantastic as well....

some good videos and songs there.

I don't agree with Peek-A-Boo being the Banshees finest moment, though it is a very good song. To me the Banshees were in their prime in 1980 and 1981, which culminated in "Spellbound", one of my favourite songs of all time and still glorious to listen to even now. But I agree with Peek-A-Boo heralding a change of direction. I had lost interest in the Banshees from "Dear Prudence" except for "Swimming Horses" and by 1987 had more or less given up on them. Then they came back in style...

Best ones for me was Peekaboo - Siouxsie and the Banshees, Blasphemous Rumours - Depeche Mode and This Corrosion - Sisters Of Mercy.

The Cure track's ok but not their best.

im with you on this one, after 'spellbound' imho they seemd to lose direction and again imho never made the true classic that they were capeable of.

never really got 'the cure' tbh, after 'a forest' they just failed to tweek the right buttons for me.

some good songs there TIP. I love both "Rip It Up" and "Oblivious" and used to have both on single. Roddy Frame (from Aztec Camera) sings the theme tune to "Early Doors", the best comedy to come out in recent years :)

it IS real, my local is just like that! And we even have our own 'Tommy' who sits in the corner and just moans all the time!

'Marian' is my fave Sisters moment.... I remember buying First and Last and Always' on the day it came out - how sad is that? 'Alice' is exceptional, too - sounds brilliant, even now.

The Sisterhood stuff was good, too.....

Taking inspiration from the talent-free zone that is Lily Allen latest (Heather Mills inspired rant - well they both use the same PR company!) that all British girl-groups around at the moment are rubbish, I felt I would take a look at seven female girl groups from the 1980s......
