X Factor 'to top Christmas chart'

Source: bbc.co.uk

Bookmakers have predicted that the eventual winner of the current X Factor will top the charts this Christmas.

"The winner of this year's X Factor has to start clear favourite," said bookmakers William Hill, citing the success of 2005 winner Shayne Ward.

William Hill has given the X Factor winner odds of 1-3, ahead of quartet All Angels and boy band Take That.

Dionne Mitchell and Kerry McGregor were voted off the ITV talent show in a double elimination on Saturday.

The decision about whether to release an X Factor Christmas single will be made toward the end of the current series.

"Christmas Number One is a national institution with hundreds of thousands bet annually on the winner, all of which has been changed by the X Factor, which is in danger of becoming the Scrooge of Christmas Number One betting," said William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams.

"We can only hope that groups such as Take That and All Angels can break the mould."

All Angels' cover version of the Robbie Williams single Angels, the official single of the British Legion Poppy Appeal, is released in December. Take That's comeback single Patience is released next month.

However Gennaro Castaldo, spokesman for retailer HMV, believes Sir Cliff Richard may be in line for his fourth Christmas Number One, with a cover of his hit single Move It, featuring Queen guitarist Brian May.

"You can never rule out Sir Cliff when it comes to Christmas," said Mr Castaldo.

"And by teaming up with the likes of Brian May and Daniel O'Donnell, and their considerable fan bases, he's giving himself every chance of landing his 15th UK number one - putting him just two behind The Beatles."

Ross cheered for Mills attack

Monday, October 30, 2006

TV presenter Jonathan Ross launched a scathing public attack on Heather Mills McCartney today.

The star mocked the sensational claims Heather has made against her estranged husband Sir Paul McCartney in their bitter divorce battle.

Ross was hosting the Q Awards in London and opened by saying: "Heather Mills McCartney - what a f****** liar.

"I wouldn't be surprised if we found out she's actually got two legs."

His remarks were cheered by a celebrity-packed audience of musicians which included Oasis front man Noel Gallagher, U2, The Who and Boy George.

Ross also had the audience in stitches with a quip about Madonna's adoption of a little boy from Malawi.

"She's not the first pop star who spends millions rescuing a young boy from destitution and poverty. Look at what Robbie Williams has done for Jonathan Wilkes," he joked.

Wilkes is Williams's childhood friend who regularly appears alongside the star.

Prince William Ashes hope

October 30, 2006 11:00pm

CRICKET officials are trying to confirm rumours that Prince William might come to Australia for one of the Test matches in the coming Ashes series.

Cricket Australia was trying to contact counterparts in England last night to determine whether Prince William would head a list of VIPs expected here for possibly the fifth Test in Sydney in early February.

Former British prime minister John Major, rockers Sir Mick Jagger and Sir Elton John and television interview show host Michael Parkinson are also believed to be among the English cricket lovers planning to be here.

Robbie Williams, a keen cricket fan, has organised a tour of Australia to coincide with the Test series, while lyricist Sir Tim Rice will definitely be coming in his role as the former president of the Marylebone Cricket Club.

Colin Gibson, from the England and Wales Cricket Board, said yesterday he did not know whether Prince William, second in line to the English throne behind his father, Prince Charles, intended to be in Australia for the Ashes.

"I think you'll find some politicians will come, some rock stars and some television celebrities, but we don't tend to hear about it until very late when they contact us wanting tickets.

I've never heard Robbie and cricket being mentioned in the same sentence before. Is he a fan?

Don't think so Jupiter. ;)
