July 3, 20169 yr From James Masterton's column this week Some of the stakeholders of the Official Charts Company have apparently been getting restless, questioning whether the formula and sales:streams ratio which was carefully calculated back in the summer of 2014 to properly reflect the shape of the competing markets hasn't now been rendered out of date by the seismic shift that has occurred since with an exponential rise in music listening and a still gentle decline in the act of monetary purchase. Word reaches me from an impeccable industry source that we might well be about to see an adjustment to the aforementioned ratio, at least where singles are concerned. You heard it here first.
July 3, 20169 yr Simple solution: don't include streams from any 'Current UK Top 20' playlists (or similar ones).
July 3, 20169 yr Would that really be possible though? I don't think Spotify can tell what streams are coming from what playlist.
July 3, 20169 yr Would that really be possible though? I don't think Spotify can tell what streams are coming from what playlist. If you click on any artist's Monthly Listeners, you get stats that include which playlists the artist is being played from the most, so I assume they can work it out. But as silly as I find the Spotify top 50 effect to be, I don't think it would be right to start disregarding streams just because of where they come from.
