Regina you choose EY and summed up BTW correctly.

Now you immaturity comes shining through again .

Not many people here will even get the reductive comment .
Ironic you calling anyone immature when you called people "young queens" no?

I didn't insult anyone.

Am I wrong ?

No

Now, now ladies. I think we can all agree that Madonna fans are better than this. This kind of petty name calling and squabbling is much more suited to the fanbase of someone who has been on the scene for, say, 8 years, not the fans of a true legend.

I guess I need to remember there are not many knowledgable fans in this forum.

Yet many casual enthusiastic ones.

Btw is an embarrassing rip off . The video and choreography is embarrassing .

Other than its message being a bit too forced, BTW is a great song. As for the video, Madge has made MUCH more cringy and terrible videos. Bitch, I'm Madonna

anyone?

What Madonna/Gaga internet loon DOESN'T know the reductive comment?

And "bitter old hag" was hardly offensive, it was just a tongue in cheek response to "young queens" surely?

(by the way, I properly adore both songs - I actually question people that HATE 'Born This Way' yet adore 'Express Yourself' when they are both very similar. Although maybe the fact that it's so similar puts people off enjoying the song, but surely you can see SOME worth it in given it is basically EP pt. 2)

'Born This Way' was released at a time in my life when I was struggling with my sexuality. To say it helped me through that time is an understatement. As clichéd as it sounds, it really helped me come to terms with myself and to start to (for want of a better phrase).. express myself more openly  Of course i'm going to feel a greater attachment to it than 'Express Yourself' for that reason. To downplay my choice in preferring that song to my age (when I like to think i'm not even close to being old, but i'm also very knowledgeable on music that has come and gone) is quite patronising whether Vibe meant it to come across like that or not.

Regina - Why are you bringing up BIM that has no relevance in this thread.

Haus that is a nice story to hear . I guess that was what gaga wanted to achieve for the younger generation. But as many people have said it feels forced , copied and calculated.

I am a Madonna fan and I will never ever accept that BTW is better. I have never met any Madonna fan that prefers BTW !!

BTW wouldn't exist without EY

I was making a point that it's laughable to call BTW's video embarrassing when Madonna has made much more embarrassing videos.

See, this is all VERY understandable and something akin to what I feel for Hung Up. Granted there aren't any overtones (or undertones) in that song about accepting who you are, but it did the same thing for me all the same. I think for that reason, by 2011, I had no desire for a popstar to wear that mantle for and that's why I dislike Born This Way for the most part. It didn't do anything for me on that level, bar be vaguely patronising. The 'don't be a drag, just be a queen' line will never sit will with me because it serves only to provide a binary between two options and thus lumps you into one or the other and implies not being a 'queen' is a bad thing. It is quite possible, probably in fact, that that isn't the case and on some level that's MY issue with the word 'queen' feeding into my feelings towards the song, but that's where I am with it and 5 years haven't improved/softened those feelings.

The fact you got similar feels from a different song means you can appreciate my connection with BTW yeah? And I fully get what you're saying although "I had no desire for a popstar to wear that mantle" - that surely shouldn't affect your enjoyment of a song? I had no desire for Sia to release a Friday night party anthem with 'Cheap Thrills' but it doesn't stop me enjoying the song any more or less.

Even if it's done before countless times it doesn't mean it can't be done again and appreciated again. Madonna has repeated things that Marilyn Monroe has done but with her own spin, that's how I see the Gaga/Madonna dichotomy: influenced by and attempting to evolve from.

I like both versions :P ...I mean songs. I do like some of Madonna's music (especially Ray of Light & Rebel Heart) but Gaga is and always will be my number one. That being said, I do think Born This Way takes influence from Express Yourself and that isn't necessarily a bad thing? Clearly Madonna was somebody Gaga looked up to alongside Prince and Bowie as mentioned in the Fame CD Booklet credits, so if anything the similarity is compliment.

I like both equally. But, I voted for 'Born This Way' because I pride myself in being young and being a queen.

Thanx.

In and of itself, her writing the song as is would have been fine, but this was also the time when she became completely absorbed by hubris and thus, for me, the mantle she was wearing was largely a self appointed, self congratulatory and unearned one. And yes of course this is largely tinged with my own Gaga bias because I realise for a lot of people the BTW era is everything they could want from a popstar.

In terms of being influenced by/evolving from I feel the whole Artpop era was a much more organic and successful way of doing it. BTW (the song) is musically very lazy, in my opinion.
