October 6, 200618 yr Author is anyone going to buy beck's the information this week? i was thinking of getting it however there has been so many vering reviews from the best album this year to about 1 star in the sunday times culture in the normal times they have given it 4 stars: Beck The Information Polydor When your career is a tale of two (very different) ditties, pleasing all the people all of the time is never going to be easy. Depending on which side you like your Beck buttered, the hippest Scientologist in Los Angeles (albeit in a sparse field of competitors) is at his best, either: a) when singing his William Burroughs fridge magnets over a changing backdrop of funky beats and pieces; or B) baring his soul with little but an acoustic guitar for company. Since the release of Odelay ten years ago he’s kept both factions keen by swinging from one extreme to the next. While last year’s upbeat Guero saw him renew the Dust Brothers collaboration that spawned Odelay, on Mutations (1998) and Sea Change (2002) producer Nigel Godrich deployed his favourite trick — quiet vocals mixed up high, no reverb — to make you feel as though you were in that damp wardrobe with Beck as he intoned his sorrows. The good news is that he might ensnare all of us with this one. Godrich returns once again, but the playful inclusivity that characterised Guero runs through all of these songs. With a “One! Two!/ You know what to do!â€, the seductively swampy hip-hop that opens up Elevator Music is the sonic equivalent of ringing the doorbell and having your jacket removed while booze and canapés are thrust your way. Some of Beck’s biggest hooks lie in wait here — Cell Phone’s Dead, Nausea, Think I’m in Love — the latter shifting marvellously from dress-down funk to an iridescent chamber-pop conclusion. In fact, it’s a good seven songs — the somnambulant glitch-folk of New Round is more of a grower — before any effort is required of us. All of which might come as sobering news to critics who hold up the unconvincing Midnite Vultures (1999) as evidence of Beck’s inability to burn down a rhythm without the Dust Brothers. In fact, separated from two turntablists (but not, obviously, a microphone), Beck’s judgment is more than fine. On Strange Apparition pounding gospel pianos à la Sympathy for the Devil take centre stage while Beck immerses himself in his own 21st-century prayer: “We’ll be on the shoreline/ When that heavy ship goes down.†Just as the CD sleeve comes blank, so that you can finish off the artwork, there’s plenty of space here for you to supply your own “wooh-woohs†and, as ever, your own interpretations. Indeed, it’s hard not to. Here, and on much of The Information, the soundscape is dense with cosmic imagery. Sounding like a knackered refugee from the Odelay sessions, on Motorcade Beck intones that “light beaming through galaxy that tells me everything is going to be OKâ€, while on the title track he warns that: “When the information comes we’ll know what we’re made from.†It could be an allusion to the belief of some Scientologists that the souls of long-dead aliens cling to the bodies of depressive humans. Or, Beck being Beck, it could be just a bunch of words that sounded good as they emerged from his mouth. When he’s on this sort of form, there’s only one viable response. One, two, you know what to do. PETE PAPHIDES
