Drake holds the #1 album this week with ease despite being only #5 on sales. His 6-week run at #1 is the longest for a male artist since 2005 (see next post). The best-seller this week is Paul Simon, who achieves his highest peak since his career best-selling album Graceland in 1986, 30 years ago! He actually had a #1 album over 40 years ago, in 1975. Volbeat earn a new career peak of #4, their previous best was #9 reached in 2013. Maren Morris is #5 with her first album but second chart entry, following the Maren Morris EP which reached #96. Dan + Shay do not get a new career peak, failing to match the #6 debut of their first album, and Tegan and Sara also fall short of Heartthrob, which entered at #3 with 49K sales. Dierks Bentley, Fifth Harmony, and Flume all drop 10 or more spots in their second week.

Drake's 'Views' Album No. 1 for Sixth Week on Billboard 200, Paul Simon Debuts at No. 3

"Views" has earned the most consecutive weeks atop the chart for an album by a man in over 10 years.

 

Drake’s Views album, as expected, holds at No. 1 for a sixth consecutive week on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The set earned 135,000 equivalent album units in the week ending June 9 (down 11 percent), according to Nielsen Music.

 

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new June 25-dated chart (where Views stays steady at No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, June 14.

 

With a sixth straight frame at No. 1, Views has the most consecutive weeks atop the chart for an album by a man in over 10 years. 50 Cent’s The Massacre was the last effort by a gent to notch six weeks in a row in the penthouse (March 19 - April 23, 2005-dated charts).

 

That said, the last album by a man with more weeks at No. 1 was Eminem’s Recovery, which tallied seven nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 between July 10 and Sept. 4, 2010.

 

And, of course, there have been a number of albums by women — along with the Frozen soundtrack — that have collected more weeks at No. 1 than Drake and Eminem in the last 10 years. Three of Taylor Swift’s albums released since 2008 have earned at least seven weeks at No. 1. Adele’s last two studio albums — 25 and 21 — have notched 10 and 24 weeks at No. 1, respectively. (25’s first seven weeks were all at No. 1.) And the Frozen soundtrack notched a mighty 13 weeks at No. 1, with eight of those consecutive.

 

But let’s get back to Drake’s Views.

 

Of the album’s 135,000 units earned in the latest chart week, 81,000 of those were in streaming equivalent album units. The rest were in traditional album sales (32,000) and track equivalent album units (22,000).

 

Views has been a monster success on streaming services, and has tallied the six largest streaming weeks for an album’s tracks.

 

The following numbers represent on-demand audio streams for album’s tracks generated during the chart’s tracking week: Views’ debut frame holds the record (245.1 million streams for its tracks), followed by its third week (186.1 million), its fourth week (166.2 million), its second week (140.8 million), and then its fifth frame (137.5 million). Coming in with the sixth biggest week among all albums is, you guessed it, Views’ sixth chart week, with 122.1 million.

 

What’s the largest streaming week for an album that is not Views? That would be the debut frame of Beyonce’s Lemonade, which earned 115.2 million streams for its tracks during its opening stanza.

 

Speaking of Lemonade, the former No. 1 album climbs one position to No. 2 on the latest Billboard 200 chart, with 69,000 units (down 13 percent). Of that sum, 48,000 were in traditional album sales.

 

Music legend Paul Simon arrives at No. 3 with Stranger to Stranger, securing his highest debut ever -- and his highest charting solo album in over 29 years.

 

The new album bows with 68,000 units, of which 67,000 were in traditional album sales. The effort was also the top selling album overall for the week, and it starts at No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart.

 

Simon was last in the top three on the Billboard 200 chart on April 4, 1987, when his Graceland album spent one week at No. 3 – its peak.

 

Stranger to Stranger is Simon’s seventh solo top 10-charting album on the Billboard 200. He’s led the list once with Still Crazy After All These Years, for one week in in 1975. In addition, Simon was of course one-half of the successful duo Simon & Garfunkel. The act notched five top 10s, including two No. 1s (Bookends, No. 1 for seven weeks in 1968, and Bridge Over Troubled Water, No. 1 for 10 weeks in 1970).

 

Rock band Volbeat earns its highest charting album yet with the arrival of its new effort, Seal the Deal & Let’s Boogie at No. 4. The set also starts with the band’s biggest sales week ever: 48,000. In terms of total overall units, the album earned 51,000 for the week.

 

The group’s previous high on the chart (and best sales week) was logged when its last album, Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies, debuted and peaked at No. 9 in 2013 with 39,000 sold in its first week.

 

Country singer Maren Morris bows at No. 5 on the new Billboard 200 with her debut full-length album for Columbia Records, Hero. It starts with 45,000 units (of which 37,000 are in pure album sales).

 

Morris has charted two top 40 hits on the Hot Country Songs chart: “My Church” (No. 3 peak in March) and a featured turn on Dierks Bentley’s “I’ll Be the Moon” (No. 40 in April).

 

Morris has previously released a self-titled EP for Columbia, which peaked at No. 96 in March. Before that, she issued three independently distributed albums between 2005 and 2011 which did not chart.

 

Rihanna’s Anti rises one spot to No. 6 with 40,000 units (down 6 percent) and Ariana Grande’s Dangerous Woman slips 6-7 with 33,000 units (down 33 percent).

 

The fourth and final debut in the new Billboard 200’s top 10 is country duo Dan + Shay with Obsessed, which starts at No. 8 with 33,000 units (26,000 in pure album sales). It’s the second top 10 effort for the pair, following 2014’s No. 6-peaking Where It All Began.

 

Closing out the new top 10 are Blake Shelton’s If I’m Honest (5-9 with 33,000 units; down 48 percent) and Twenty One Pilots’ Blurryface (holding at No. 10 with 31,000 units; up 9 percent).
