August 13, 20168 yr Author My 2nd favourite Eurovision country - Estonia - were the first to confirm the date of their 2017 national final. The final of Eesti Laul will take place on 4th March, and for the second time, will take place in the arena that hosted the 2002 Eurovision contest. The "supersized" Eesti Laul that took place in 2016, for the first time being staged in an arena instead of a TV studio, didn't convert into Eurovision success with Jüri Pootsmann finished last in his semi-final. Perhaps as a response to this, it is strongly believed that Estonia will be allowing foreign songwriters and producers to submit entries into Eesti Laul although it is yet to be confirmed whether this will have to be in collaboration with Estonian songwriters and/or an Estonian singer/band. Going back to Eesti Laul 2016, I personally doubt Laura would have qualified either in such a strong semi-final. Cartoon could have qualified if they were allowed their quite amazing gimmick/stage show, but Kristel would have had to massively improve her vocals. I can see lots of Swedish-made entries being submitted into Eesti Laul under this new rule considering the Eurovision history between Estonia and Sweden and this is sure to be a good thing from a pop lover's point of view. However I do hope that the Eesti Laul "sound" with its various indie and experimental entries doesn't get completely lost as, as it stands, Eesti Laul is the best selection outside of Scandinavia.
October 1, 20168 yr Author There's a multi-day songwriting camp for Eesti Laul 2017 happening right now, and some singers are there including Getter Jaani, Ott Lepland, Ines and Grete Paia. They are all working in teams with various Estonian, British and Swedish songwriters so if their teams come up with the perfect song, expect Eesti Laul returns for those 4 next year!
October 11, 20168 yr Author Apparently it has been confirmed the 4 above have all submitted songs and so has Laura again!
October 11, 20168 yr Exciting! I've never paid too much attention to Eesti Laul before, I suppose the constant clash with Melfest doesn't help but those names really intrigue me, I'll have to make an effort next year!
November 3, 20168 yr Author Record-breaking number of submissions, the 20 semi-finalists will be revealed nice and early as always - next Tuesday at 7pm! http://escxtra.com/2016/11/02/record-break...nced-next-week/

November 9, 20168 yr Author Can the BBC just already make a deal to take the runner-up of Eesti Laul?
November 10, 20168 yr Ooooh, Liis Lemsalu was my Worldvision entry this year, excited to hear that! In fact there's a lot of potential here, certainly Estonia don't want to pull a Switzerland and end up last in the semi 2 years running.
December 8, 20168 yr Author Yep semi one was released today and semi two is out next Thursday! I've only had a chance to listen to Elina, Lenna and Karl-Kristjan and Elina is my favourite. Took a couple of listens for me to realise this wasn't going to be Goodbye To Yesterday part two, but once it clicked it is AMAZING. Fantastic slice of retro sax dance-pop and is so radio friendly. Surely a contender depending on what semi two has to offer. It seems weird having Lenna singing in English but it's very pleasant as her songs always are, she still doesn't have a winner with Slingshot but should make another final I imagine. I checked out Karl Kristjan after reading it is basically Chainsmokers part 3 and I do hear the similarities. Very on trend, not sure it'll go all the way if Cartoon couldn't but it is great to see genres that are found in today's charts infiltrating Eurovision selections yet again. From what I hear Estonia are on the money yet again, Elina is my early favourite out of the ones I've heard!
December 8, 20168 yr Author Some people are comparing Elina's song to Ace Wilder's Melodifestivalen output, and I definitely see that. "In or Out" wouldn't be out of place in a Melodifestivalen final!
December 14, 20168 yr Author The rest of the tracks have leaked (somewhere) ahead of their official release tomorrow, lots of people saying Kerli is a surefire winner and that Spirit Animal is very alternative (by Eurovision standards) yet very amazing. Considering she's a big name I was expecting the typical "underwhelmed" reaction but that doesn't seem to have happened so it seems promising. That said I've seen comparisons that it is reminiscent of iamamiwhoami which sounds like the most awful thing possible.
December 14, 20168 yr Didn't even realise Kerli was in this, what a huge coup :o Glad to see Elina back too.
