Before we crack on with the ten WORST hit singles of 2016, let's remind ourselves of last year's horrors (even if it would be better for the sake of my sanity to never remember of these tracks' collective existence ever again):

:puke: 01 // Hozier - Take Me To Church

:puke: 02 // Sam Smith - Lay Me Down (feat. John Legend)

:puke: 03 // Walk The Moon - Shut Up And Dance

:puke: 04 // Stereo Kicks - Love Me So

:puke: 05 // Little Mix - Black Magic

:puke: 06 // Jamie Lawson - Wasn't Expecting That

:puke: 07 // Fall Out Boy - American Beauty/American Psycho

:puke: 08 // Ed Sheeran - Photograph

:puke: 09 // Meghan Trainor - Dear Future Husband

:puke: 10 // 5 Seconds of Summer - She's Kinda Hot

and the HALL OF HATE:

2015 :puke: Hozier - Take Me To Church

2014 :puke: Idina Menzel - OMG SCREECH (Let It Go)

2013 :puke: P!nk - OMG SCREECH (Just Give Me A Reason) [feat. Nate Reuss]

2012 :puke: Chris Brown - Don't Wake Me Up

2011 :puke: Bruno Mars - Grenade

Which song will join the above horrors?

Hiiipe for this as per :cheer:

(also oops at me liking/not minding 4 of your Hall of Hate, glad we agree on last year tho)

Dishonourable mentions

The following songs will not be making an appearance in the Hate Chart but are worth a mention for still being awful, boring, or a combination of the two.

Ariana Grande - 'Dangerous Woman'

Such a boring and overhyped comeback. 'Into You' at least kind of saved the era, but then 'Side To Side' became the bigger hit and that isn't nearly as good.

Calum Scott - 'Dancing On My Own'

For being a constant bad smell in the lift that is the UK top 40, and sucking all the life out of the brilliant Robyn original. He isn't even that great of a singer, and hopefully he will turn out to be a one-hit wonder.

Digital Farm Animals & Cash Cash - 'Millionaire'

CONGRATULATIONS guys on making the worst dance hit of the year. It's not often I don't like a dance song, but this is annoying enough to warrant a dishonourable mention here.

Ellie Goulding - 'Army'

Booooring. Also wasn't a fan of 'Still Falling For You', but that isn't quite as bad as this. You know you can do better Ellie.

Fergie - 'M.I.L.F. $'

Well this was a huge WTF direction from her. Clearly released just to try and grab some sales off the controversy, but it was a huge flop, thankfully. Go back to making 'Glamorous' type jams, or preferably just rejoin The Black Eyed Peas because we're overdue a proper comeback from them (that charity thing does not count).

James Arthur - 'Say You Won't Let Go'

A James Arthur comeback really wasn't something anyone wanted this year, but it happened anyway. Song's dull, and sounds like The Script and Ed Sheeran got together in the attempt to create the most bland, non-descript hit single of the year.

Jacob Sartorius - 'Sweatshirt' or any of his other "songs"

I've taken the decision to not allow this in the hate chart, as it barely qualifies as a song. Plus thankfully it wasn't an actual hit. If you haven't heard it, please don't check it out, he really cannot sing.

Katy Perry - 'Rise'

For being yet another boring Katy Perry self-empowerment song. We didn't ask for an even more lacklustre 'Roar' thank you.

Shawn Mendes - 'Mercy' and 'I Know What You Did Last Summer'

So this year we were "gifted" with another teen pop star, Shawn Mendes who had four significant hits this year. Unsurprisingly I didn't like any of them but these two escape based on being less bad and overexposed than his other two.

The Vamps - 'I Found A Girl'

I could have forgiven them as 'All Night' was quite decent (though Matoma is capable of better production than that), but that doesn't stop 'I Found A Girl' from being bad. Also, why did Omi lower himself to this after making my EOY #3 of last year?

Twenty One Pilots - 'Heathens'

Welp, this is going to be controversial. But I really don't like this. Sorry, not sorry. 'Stressed Out' was decent, okay?!!!11

Zay Hilfigerr & Zayion McCall - 'Juju On That Beat'

Is this what rap music about dancing has come to? Because it feels like it was literally made for the purpose of people doing stupid dances to it and uploading it to Vine. At least songs like Soulja Boy 'Crank That' had something to it, and Silento 'Watch Me' had a melody.

ZAYN - 'Pillowtalk'

For trying to be edgy but ending up just being really boring. All hype no substance.

That's all for tonight, the top 10 worst songs of the year will be announced another time.

#10. Niall Horan - This Town

What we really didn't want or need this year was yet another Ed Sheeran wannabe, and coming from the weak voice of Niall Horan or more commonly known as Niall From 1D. Maybe he should adopt Fromwundee as his surname. The song is really boring and goes nowhere, and has what can barely be described as a chorus. At least when Ed Sheeran makes a boring ballad, like 'Thinking Out Loud', he actually sings it with emotion and there is a strong hook. None of this can be said about 'This Town', which makes it unsurprising really that it underperformed in places like the US, where it only reached #25. Unfortunately for us Brits it made our top 10, but I had expected it to do better than #9 and just a month in the top 20, so I guess I'm thankful for that. Needless to say I'm not looking forward to any of his future releases especially if this is the road he's decided to go down. Also, this isn't the last of Niall we'll be seeing in this countdown.

#09. DNCE - Toothbrush

DUNCE :manson: :puke:

Once the Jonas Brothers stopped being a thing it seemed that only Nick Jonas managed to get a solo career out of it, and to be fair to him his hit singles were decent. That's not something I can say about Joe Jonas's project DNCE. Firstly, what a disappointing band name. For a group named DNCE, none of their songs actually make me want to dance. They also sound like they're trying to be Maroon 5, which they are not. Also, we really don't need another Maroon 5. 'Toothbrush' may not have been as overexposed and annoying as their other hit, and it's a stretch to even call this a hit as it missed the UK top 40 (thankfully), but it's still terrible. Jonas' voice sounds so whiny in the chorus, and the lyrics are awful and cringey. The production values are basically non-existant as it's generic as f***. Basically, nothing saves this song. Yet it's still only the ninth-worst of the year, so there's more crap to come including from DUNCE themselves.

REPENT THY SINS

Honestly this hate chart is going to be the worst thing about this EOY

Dancing On My Own, Millionaire, Juju and PILLOWTALK are all vile crimes against humanity. And that MILF track although it's so unmemorable I can't even recall how it goes.

#08. Fifth Harmony - That's My Girl

If the hate chart last year proved anything it was that it's not just boybands who get scrutinised on here, but girlbands can have their flaws too. Little Mix's huge hit 'Black Magic' made my top 5 worst songs of 2015, and I still don't like it now. But this post isn't about them, indeed this year they have escaped the hate chart, though they certainly won't be making my love chart either. Fifth Harmony on the other hand made two great urban-pop jams in 'Work From Home' and 'All In My Head (Flex)', one of which could appear in my top 100 of the year. Their current single however is just awful. The offputting and quite nasally brass riff doesn't help, but it could be excused if the rest of the song was any good. I don't even have much of a problem with the verses other than the fact they're forgettable and the lyrics just read as a generic clichéd girl-power anthem. The reason this is in the top 10 is the chorus, which de-elevates the song from 'bleh' to 'bad'. It sounds like the girls are drowning in autotune and need CPR real quick. The wailing of the titular lyric is just so painful to listen to, and when that's basically the entire chorus that's not a good thing. And to think this was meant to be the lead single before supposed promo single 'Work' took off better than they expected... I'm glad that didn't happen. Also, Simon's shameless promotion of the song by giving it to Gifty to sing on The X Factor, when she was more than capable of singing a better song. :/

I knew you wouldn't be pleased with the #8

trust me you won't like to see what I've put at #1...

I find That's My Girl marginally better than Work From Home and All In My Head (Flex). But that's really just the best of a really bad bunch.

I really didn't like This Town initially but it's actually not that bad for a ballad IMO, better than James Arthur's song anyway.

DNCE tho... yeah, Cake By The Ocean was ok-ish for about 2 weeks but I can't listen to it now, I don't even want to risk hearing their other songs.

You don't want to. All three songs I've heard from them (Cake, Toothbrush, Body Moves) are terrible.
